Wait - I gotta buy the game to trial the Open Beta?

Was looking at downloading the beta client from AtomicGamer and at least trying the Beta and seeing what all the fuss is about. Except that on the website theres a notice explaining that I need to set up an account and purchase the game before playing.

Really? Id like to think that my decision to purchase the game would be based on my experience with the beta.

    Beta is for testing.

Open beta's are typically about server load testing.

They are not "free trials" per se.

    *edit*

Further research shows you do not have to pay to get into the OB.

    No you don't.

The game is still in closed beta right now so to access it right now you have to have a purchased version of the game (or have been in earlier beta phases).

Open beta is starting in february, you need to create a game account and then just login when OB starts for free.

Also unlike other open betas, this one isn't just a free demo period, there will be bugs and things that need to be fixed for release.

No, you don't need to buy the game for Open Beta, just set up an account. You do that buy doing the first step only of the buying process, which does not include any CC info or anything like that.

I am going to make two characters.  One named Azureal and the other Gryphyn.  The only reason I am going to do this (both beta and release) is because you bothered me with this topic.

    They will be mule characters.

Gawd I sure hope you are quoting some marketing hype press release and don't really feel that way. I mean anyone that truly believes what you posted should be the national poster child for mental illness or insanity.
