As far as I know they will both be coming out around the same time or at least the same year... and i wish i had the sources but I know the TOR release is on this site as for the GW2 im not sure .....
both games will compete with each other on a grand scale...i think pretty close to way back when, when it was WoW VS GW..
i plan to look and play both...and i have my doubts in both...TOR with very little info on it on anything but the fact that they have story not even a stright answer on the Sub system...
and GW2 will it's massive World VS World PvP but yet players are not locked into a world so they can always just switch sides when they want?????
Now we all know that we need much much more info on these two games but I am interested in hearing some thoughts on this matter...
FYI....I play GW and have had an account since launch 51 months i think and own all the campaigns and EOTN, But SWG was my love and come on who doesnt just love Star Wars.
so what do you all think?
Comments
thanks =]
I think it is way too early for a compare and contrast of the two games. We don't even know of the mechanics in GW2 yet. As far as release is concerned, I'd say that SW:TOR looks to be coming out sooner.
Anyway, I will be playing both so no real conflict for me.
Discussing very specific games more than 12 months before launch is rather useless.
It is causing people to play "in their minds" complete other game experiences than one can possibly deliver.
Reread the OP's post and I can already point out several sentences where hype and "mind" playing are made up.
It's one of the main reasons games don't live up to the dreamed up part of pre launch hype.
If you know that even very small hic-ups in gameplay can cause a game to fail (like hampered controls, balancing errors, wrong itemisation, badly chosen professions, server balance, lag, etc...) these "discussions" are meaningless from a gameplay view.
Want a real mmorpg? Play WOW with experience turned off mode and be Pve_Pvp King at any level without a rat race.
Warhammer??
I, too, think that it is too early to compare the two. We need far more information released by the developers of both games.
However, what I do know is that Guild Wars 2's "quest" system is a HUGE draw card for me. It sounds very unique and a welcome change of pace from the norm.
Will give you a serious opinion once they are both released.
Both for now look good as games, will agree that I see more MMORPG with GW2 then with ST:Tor, but still both far to early to really make a serious opinion.
I plan to play both. The "VS" is irrelevant.

I think GW2 is basically going the standard MMO approach and forgetting what made GW unique, but im willing to give ANet the benefit of the doubt. SWTOR seems to be pushing the limits of MMOs as we know and give them the epic storyline that nearly all games lacked since...always, but they risk leaning a bit too much into the single player realm.
Wait and see mode, both games may very well be winners, both games might end up dissapointing many people. time will tell...
How so?
They're keeping the instanced missions/important storyline events, with a completely new and unique quest system that is far more multiplayer than the average MMO's quest system is.
GvG will still be there, as will the combat system, albeit with more inventive skills and more balance. The level cap will be higher, but the attribute cap will still remain low like Guild Wars 1's is. I don't think ArenaNet are changing the core of Guild Wars at all.
Sorry OP but I believe the target audiences are different. SWToR will not be specifically targeting the same audience as GW2, the products are also vastly different.
GW2 will not have a subscription fee first and foremost. Its not unheard of for players to play both GW and a subscription based game either.
There is also a huge difference in genre's to boot. I personally dont have any faith SWToR will be any good. Its coming across as a very mainstreamed theme park game with no real innovation or technological push. Its hard to even see another SW game after SWG and that fiasco. BioWare is also new to the mmorpg, so theres no telling which way the winds will blow...

adding a world means unexpected PvP and certain degree of unbalance
people that plays GW likes arena battlegrounds, which are basically "pvp when i want if i want", and strictly balanced by definition
GW2 and SW:TOR... why those two?
They're on completely different league altogether. It's kinda meaningless to start comparing the two.
I could see myself playing GW2 but not TOR, however that has nothing to do with which game is better but what kind of playstyle (among other things) I prefer. SW:TOR might be a better game but I'd still play GW2.
I could figure out much better comparisons between MMO's, if we really must have them..
Trying to compare SW:TOR and GW2 is like trying to compare steak and cake.
I mean, they're both food, but, they're completely different.

The apples and oranges argument really has never made much sense to me. In regards to that, I find that I'm always in the mood for apples, whereas I am not always in the mood for oranges.
In relevance to your argument, I'd much rather prefer steak. It gives you strength and is much better for system immunization than cake. Therefore, steak wins that argument.
I am a somewhat big Star Wars fan myself, but given Bioware's history of PC games--I mean, I still have hopes for the game, but I highly doubt Bioware can pull it off.
Guild Wars 2 on the other hand I am less concerned about. Since 2005, Guild Wars has launched with THE SMOOTHEST RELEASE of any MMORPG to date, IMO. I don't even remember any bugs or glitches on the first day. Despite all the flaming about lack of content, there is still much, much to do inside Guild Wars, and that's not just limited to PvP. NCSoft has treated me well in that respect so, if I were to vote on who was most likely to succeed, NCSoft hands down.
But I still would like to see The Old Republic do very well...honestly. The world just needs a Star Wars MMO after SWG was destroyed.
