This is my subjective opinion but I believe good mmo gaming is a thing of the past. I don't think I will ever experience anything like EQ, FFXI, Tibia, or DAoC again. Obviously there are chances that new and innovative ideas will come out (actually inevitable) but I'm not sure if it will be in the mmorpg market anytime soon. Game developers are now, and now I'm seeing also majority of players also, are focusing on graphics, ease of play, and making everybody happy. In any case, this is the mmo market of today and I have to accept that.
So I'm asking for what other hobbies people here like doing that fills that void of entertainment, immersiveness, and fantasy we all crave? This is obviously a fairly broad question, but I guess I'm bored and figure I'd like to pick up some new hobby I can pour some time into. Obviously reading is a choice, but I already do that regularly and read 1-2 books a month, plus any reading I do in educational studies. I've thought about picking up Warhammer fantasy or 40k, but I think I may be too old for that. If my friends did it it would be fun to sit around and get drunk and play, but where all the places I could play at are inhabited by middle-high schoolers. I'm not an artist and therefor am not that interested in creating art or making music; although I have thought about getting a couple digital turn tables.
Any good indie games I don't know about? Any particularly good, competitive online games out there? I'm really looking at something I could become good at and something I do with others. Isn't there some underground subculture that I could partake in? I suppose recreational drug usage is a good choice. If I was born a hundred years ago, I'd be content with chess. But today we have too many options and therefor contentment is something a little harder to achieve.
This thread was more fun to write than actually expect any serious responses from. But I'd still appreciate any new ideas.

What makes you think there won't be anything like FFXI again? FFXIV is on it's way, and Square Enix isn't going to half-ass it. If that's not enough for you, Guild Wars 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic (heheh, okay, maybe...), and Warhammer 40k MMO are on the horizon.
Rumors of Blade & Soul and Continent of the Ninth to arrive within 2011 too. Have faith.
I also try culinary and photography as well.. ^^
The only thing which will draw me back to mmos is a virtual mmorpg. Way off into the future.
Even mmos which come out with a "new, innovative way to play!" will still equate to "go kill 10 rats and bring me their tails".
give DAoC a shot. They just merged all servers into one just recently. Theyre also giving away all of their expansions. The game is very busy now, hell of a lot of content. Things I completely forgot about like making your own poisons and making your own dyes specific to the type of armor you wear.
If its been over 5 years since you played it, youll notice the graphics have been updated as well as the UI. They also reworked the tutorial as far as I can remember.
if you're looking for a non-mmo hobby, try model building *shrugs* . I use to blow a lot of time making old war diaroma's before my MMO addiction kicked in years ago. Models have come a long way, and not just military models.. but even fantasy models.
If you're into warhammer, check out your local hobby shop for 40k games. Paint and build your own pieces and join up with one of the games being held.

Take pictures that not only look good, but taste good too!

I wouldn't say MMOs are dead, but I would say they are stagnant. And they will remain that way until new ideas and innovation are brought to the business. Most likely from people who come from outside the industry.
Make a hobby out of looking at women. You can never get tired of looking at them... especially pretty ones. If you are so inclined you can even go up and talk to them . Or you can do like some of the older folks here and get married. That ought to eat up all your free time before you know it.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
Hobbies with potential to make money or a career from is where it's at. If I'm not playing video games, I'm typically penning game concepts or brainstorming a book or graphic novel. I can't draw for shit, but I know my way around a good setting/story.
I recommend photography, drawing or story-craft to anyone with considerable taste.

Hopefully not at the same time.
Why the hell not, I've seen people skydive with their dogs before... Must you deprive your furry companions of the many joys of throwing yourself out of an airplane and hurtling toward the earth at terminal velocity?
