Who wants to join the Shadow faction or the Vorlons? Maybe you want to start as Human or Centauri, or Membari? For those fans of this now classic show, how many think this would make the perfect IP for an mmorpg... and for that matter would it be perfect for a sandbox type with equal parts pve and pvp environment?

As awesome as it would be, I'd rather have Battlestar Galactica, based on the days of old, of course, not the new Sy-Fy crap that made it bizarre and hard to follow.
However, I do see where you're going. The 3 Faction PvP would be great and it's definitely a great sci-fi IP.

I really don't see any MMO potential with B5, RTS with a persistant galaxy map tracker maybe but nothing more than that.
Otherwise it would simply be another crappy IP MMO.
STO's poor performance and SGW probably never hitting shelves and SWOR looking more and more like it is going to go sit in the same corner as SWG, these are all big hints that maybe, just maybe , game designers need to stop milking IP's and work towards building something original that will stimulate the players. Right now the gaming industry is playing the same game as the movie industry, rehash, reheat, repeat.
Yes, yes, of course, why didn't I think of that? They can sit to rot with Mimesis, Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault, and more, which were great original IPs.

fully agree
my favourite IP with DUNE, ofc the great IP forgotten
It's a shame, too. All they ever did with it is make a few RTS games. =/
I loved the movie and the books.

Although I do think it might make a good mmo,I shudder at the thought of any of the present companies taking this IP and completely destroying it in every way shape and form.
Think about it,if you were the author of the original and seen how badly the IP's that are out right now have been done, would you let them make a mess of your story?
once upon a time there was a mmo dune project made by cryo, but the company desapeared and no one knew anything else about it
As good idea as it is, Star Trek also has many factions that could have been introduced in STO for a better 3 way faction PvP, but as proven, developers are still stuck in the past of 2 faction PvP. Funny enough, the game released as 1.5 faction PvP on top of things.
I personally would like to see a B5 MMO at least considered, I agree it might mean that they'll butcher the IP, but that will make the series hit the TV again and gain new fans, could bring the IP back to life with a new series...
Thankfully Michael Straczynski seems to care about IP's he makes. But yeah... Any of these MMO companys trying to make the game would suck. God Id hate to have to put up with another STO or worse.
God forbid the game dident have Both Freeroaming in Stations, and Spaceship combat.
Although at this point Id be happy with a Space fighter game. And B5's Fighters were the Kings of ScyFi fighters (IMHO)
I mean look at it...
If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.
Samuel Adams
Terry Goodkind's books with the seeker was made into a TV show and i was thinking an MMO based on that may be interesting.
Mord Sith class, Confessor class, Dharan class, the invisible people class (magic doesn't work on them but they have shitty skills could be interesting).

I agree that Babylon 5 might look as a great IP to make an MMO around, but I'm afraid it's not the best out there.
As big fan of B5, I only have to point at the "filthy 5th season" to make my point. Season 1 tru 4 were a whole story from beginning to end. The 5th season was quickly written because WB approved at the last moment (somewhere halfway season 4) to allow a 5th season.
B5 as MMORPG I fear the same thing might happen. The story is over, it had a pretty clear ending and we're all in a "happy universe" where the Shadows and Vorlons have left to join the first ones in an alternate dimension. What's left for the player to do? Start quarreling about space around Narn and Centauri Prime? I know there's still some "unexplored" story there, but we've all seen what happens later on in "In the beginning"...
The only way to make a B5 MMORPG to work, is by doing the same thing that's done with LotR. Be a privateer (whatever race) and follow the story as it folds itself from an other perspective.
Bottom line, you can't change the story of B5 as it stands. You can only be a spectator of the main story. Of course, side stories can be made, but I'm not sure if MJS wants that (or he wants to write them himself).
Then the PvP part... Vorlons and Shadows have left (if the MMO plays during the series, then they should be NPCs for sure). Mimbari have no quarrel with any of the races. Earth is neutral in most ways. Narn and Centauri, well, we know where that went.
Main point, PvP is not an active on-going thing. Unless you rewrite most of the storyline (and have MJS oobject to it)
Bottom line. As much as a fan of B5 I am, I really don't think an MMORPG would work. A single-player RPG would work very well though, perhaps with teamplay online, but as MMORPG..? Nah...
I like Babylon 5. That's why I don't want it to have an MMORPG. It would be a disappointment as Star-Trek.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
No ! after seeing how Conan , Star Wars , Star Trek was flushed down the toilet by all those money hungry , vision-crippled MMO companies...i have to say please dont
As long as it ha perma-death like the show lol.
Since we're throwing out ideas how bout a LEXX mmo?
can't go wrong with a giant dragonfly as a personal vehicle!
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
There is a Babylon 5 mod for X3 Terran Conflict currently worked on. Its no mmo but seems quite promising.

everything seems to be a perfect IP for a new mmorpg >.>

I agree with Talroc. I am sick of seeing great IP's for mmo's turned into crap. I would love to see Wing Commander and the Privateer series combined into a mmo, but I don't want to see these turned into some crap mmo. Even though Space: Above and Beyond didn't fair too well on tv, I believe it would be a good IP to use too, but I don't want to see it ruined either.
could need too much brain activity for todays zombie gaming generation.

I'd play a Bab5 mmo. I like STO..LOTRO...and AOC...the most faithful representation of an IP being LOTRO. AoC is great imo..but would be better if it were more open world and casters were rare.maybe unlockable like the original Jedi class in SWG. STO is just fun imo...not a long haul..but good for short burst play. I think BAB5 would be great...they would need to incorporate some sort of mechanic for corruption and politics. Maybe a diplomacy mini-game like Vanguard uses plus some sort of gauge indicating your corruption from the Shadow and Vorlons alike...something that would incorporate the switching of allegiance that occurred in the show from time to time. (but with crucial consequence)
Definitely.
The above link is in good humor, you understand .
I think Eastenders the MMO would be great (only UK people would get that joke)
Or the Cosby's the MMO!!! Or or or or The fresh prince of bell air!!! Oh yeah!! I'll be Will Smith class! :P
Would like to see this... but with the way the industry is today and the MMO jumpers (the 1-2 hr a day I dont have time players) would turn this potential IP into a instanced filled themepark full of cookie cutter classes , crafting as a afterthought and a arcade shooter for space combat and arenas for pvp, its wishful thinking for the lot of people including me that want a known IP to be a complex and massive game.

Personally I would love a Baybylon 5 (or same universe anyway) MMO sandbox, but I'd hope it have flight sim-esque controls, otherwise i'd just play EVE.
