Remember that day?

Do you all remember that day, when you played your first MMO? My first true MMO was Merdian 59. I remember the first day I logged into that game, and it was a fantastic moment. After I played Meridian 59 for awhile, I played EQ. EQ was a great game that I enjoyed immensly. It was so new and awesome to run into new zones, and everyone was a newbie. The community was awesome as well, always learning, and the Learned so helpful. The industry was new, and the players were new to the industry. It was magic, those moments of discovery. But after time, and all the years that have gone by, nothing feels new or exciting. I am wondering how we could all get that moment of freshness back again? Are our expectations ruined by what we have all experienced so far? So many MMO's are the same, and if they were different, would we all be confused?

So what I am asking basically is, what would feel new and exciting, like the days in the past with the first MMO's?

What would make it feel new? A complete lack of interface clogging up screen space when you actually want to play the game. ^^

Nothing. You cant go home again. the sooner you realise this, the happier you'll be.

It's the feeling of new that makes us remember those days.

At the same time, people wouldn't like their favorite genre changing, but they'd like to experience the same kind of feeling they had when they played their first MMO... but these two cancel each other out.

Either you play a game that is familiar to you and never be able to experience the same kind of feeling as you did with your first MMO, or you play a game you know nothing about, that is confusing, and be able to experience the feeling of freshness you once did in the past.

But people fear the new, and get stuck in the trap of nostalgy- so most people can never experience "that feeling" again.

Yes getting stuck in the old days is not what we should do I reckon. Move on, and all that is what we should do for sure. I just miss those old EQ days is all. Wish there could be a way to regain that all back.

    Dont let nostalgi fool you.

You can regain the old EQ days, but by playing a game similar to EQ is not how you can accomplish it. It'll have to be a completely new experience, that way you'll be able to go back to "those days".

Nostalgia only ruins it if you refuse to move forward.

Too many MMORPG gamers say, "I want something new" while saying "I want something exactly the same."  (by refusing to play something which isn't a MMORPG that fits into the strict guidelines that they find enjoyable.)

Unsurprisingly, these players tend to not be very satisfied.

Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics.

First was like OP's Meridian59, but felt it was okay, next was UO and again it felt okay, my love to this genre really lifted off with Star Wars Galaxies, I come from a wide range of games in all sort of genre's but SWG did it really for me, gave me that what I hoped this genre would evolve into, there hasn't been a MMORPG to satisfied or filled that gap SWG left behind until I hit Fallen Earth which is my first MMORPG since years that has me playing it since it was released, no other MMORPG I have played or tried wen't beyond a few weeks to a month, tho did play WoW off and on total time might be about a year, but only due to some of my old SWG friends that joined that game, havn't touched WoW since 1 week after BC was released.

Fallen Earth does so many things right which is mainly meant towards the playstyle I want from my MMORPG experiance as the game is definitly not for everyone, it gave me that first time feel again, which some people say can not happen, well it can and it has.
