I am thoroughly frustrated as I just spent hours downloading and installing this game only to log on to a frozen screen that royally suffocated my computer into a non-responsive twitching mass. The amount of lag I experienced was utterly mind boggling, rendering the game unplayable, as I couldn't even walk forward one step before I was forced into a control-alt-delete suicide or a forced "Not Responding" exit.
I turned all the graphic specs down to the lowest, and still I experience this lag.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I played AO for years and never experienced what you described except at release.
I have played AO on boxes that would make people laugh now.
Not sure what's going on but it is almost certainly at your end unfortunately. Sounds like a conflict of some sort or maybe an outdated driver.
I would update all your dirvers and try again if you haven't already.

I see complaints like this from people that have really nice PCs. MY PC is dog shit so I run AO like a dream on full settings with no hiccups.
Have a quad core Cpu? Dual graphics cards? Windows 7? AO normally acts up for these people.
Hopefully the new engine will fix that.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Really? That's very unfortunate. It makes sense, though, in a weird way.
Oh well. Are there any possible substitutes I might like besides AO?
Yeah dude last time I checked AO was really CPU intensive and it only uses 1 core and I dont think its compatible with dual card systems and who knows if its running right with windows 7.
Its an old game I suggest giving it a go when the upgrades hit.
Substitutes? Fallen earth, Saga of ryzom.

Haha, yes, I'm patching Fallen Earth as I write this, actually.

Yeah FE is a very good game. Awesome crafting, great community and a massive world to explore.
I even enjoy the combat even though most of these guys here give it shit since its not as nice as FPS combat.

I have installed AO on a computer with only a 8mb video card. The computer was so old maybe built in 2000 and i was able to log into AO and move about lol, this was like in 2007. I did it as a test, so AO is very easy on slow machines. You may just have a corrupted installed or yes there were times when they change the servers hardware in 2008 and or 9 they game lagged so bad you were in fact frozen or locked in shops and were unable to get out but these lag spikes only lasted less than 5 min but for the most part 99% of the time this game is lag free. Yes it lag some times and has for years you get huge lag spikes or a play field will crash mainly on RK1.
they could have issue with their server but last i checked them they gave lot of love to this game and are in the process of upgrading graphic so i think when you installed you might not have had administrator right and as is often the case the game start downloading fine but then later some other part needed are skipped by your system because of firewall issue or administrator issue
i dont say its your fault since the chronical of spellborn have issue since it hasnt and wont be patched till they go f2p release
but its very unlikly its the server or the game its probably the way you downloaded or anti-virus or firewall!
Try setting your rendering device (via the settings button on the launcher, before logging in) to "Your Card Name - Direct3D T&L HAL". This fixed the FPS issues I was having since reinstalling.
There's only two places in AO that make me ultra lag - elysium (not normally, but sometimes) and pande raids when there's like 20+ people. My solution is usually to turn the settings on low and sometimes even the effects. Turning the effects off makes even the biggest raid ever run smoothly.
Chances are, it's on your end. especially if you're using Vista. I used to have Vista, and that's when I had the most trouble for some reason. I'm currently running the game on Windows 7 Home Premium, and it works just fine.
