I've seen quite a few new threads and peaked interest in Ryzom lately. I wanted to contribute some hopefully truthful no bias information about the game, my experiences, ect. But I will up here say, long story short, this game has a gameworld, a planet that seems alive and the creatures and humanoids are part of this ecosystem. The crafting system is complex and based on this living planet which makes it awesome. exploring and trekking across the planet is fun. it can be done on your own, risky and fun. It has INVASIONS on a large scale which are fun as hell. its has faction/outposts battles which can ingrain your name in this games history. it is grindy, what a surprises its an mmo....quoted 10000times. some things are not balanced imo like ranged. God why does rocket ammo weigh 50! jesus!. art doesn't appeal to some people but at the same time like I said, the art is Alive!. One thing this game does good is creating a somewhat real world to play in, which in the long term I think will be the point of MMO regardless of setting(fantasy, real, sci fi), and this game does it WELL!
I've recently started playing again myself after not playing for 4 years or so(besides this 1 month a while back).4 years ago was awesome by the way. This game would've been popular, but WoW bulldozed this game and many others. Nothin against WoW though, I love Blizzard.
I'm enjoying the starting area, although I think they should axe it and move that idea to the mainland cities in some way or another. Then newbs would get to see whats up in the real Atys. So what I'm saying is the starting area is not really that great of a preview to what the rest of the game is. Although it's a decent preview.... Community is helpful as always, of course I kinda know what I'm doing. Heh, I am community. That's why I love this game. You grow as friends in game and share good memories of Kitin Invastions(yes invasions of mobs) I haven't had any trouble getting parties to kill the bosses except during the slow hours(late Guild invites for lower lvl players are pretty common. You really gotta play on the island for few days to get the hand of anything. this game also has a somewhat steep learning curve depending on your patience and initial interest in the game. the starting quests have a story kinda. It's all based on the lore: the bugs(kitin), the goo, the races differences.
If I say whats up in the universe channel when I log on and when people say what up I notice that some recognize me by name(well they did, i changed my name whatver) already which is cool. My character is progressing slowly, but I'm a solo lover and I love to craft and fight and do magic and shoot guns. Everything is progressing in a balanced way though and the mats I'm getting from killing are equaling out lvl wise in harvest/craft so great. I'm having a good amount of fun. I got baked and forgot the rest . but If more ppl played this game would be really really awesome like it was after launch(minus rubberbanding and all the bugs we had BACK THEN...). It's not like your hoping on this games features and such, whats there is there, and might be improved, thats the facts of the situation. try it's 21 day unlimited trial out if ur daring skip the newb land, although the newb land is a nice little island in itself once u figure it out. have fun

I'd have a sub if they didn't use a screwy pament method, but I recommend everyone do the 21-day trial just to absorb some of this game's good ideas; like NPC migration patterns, weather changes, customizable abilities, etc. The game has a lot of good points once you get past the nooby zone - which leads me to the one bad point of the game - the nooby zone.
You are going to need a big group to complete the final boss there, or choose to leave the zone early, but you can only leave early with no missions active. Missions in this zone cannot be abandoned, so if you find yourself stuck on a boss you're going to need help. The good thing though, is that vets keep high-skill alts in the zone to help players kill the bosses and get good armor. I've done it 4 times with the help of them, and they don't seem to get tired of it no matter how many times I disguise myself as an alt and get them to bail me out. Heh.

I've just finished a few days on the newbie island and yes, the game does have a few good ideas, but at the end of the day, this is always going to be niche gaming. You'll always have players who are happy to spend hours crafting or endlessly grinding on kills in order to advance their characters - that's what they enjoy and good luck to them. This game does it very well - but that's all it does. If you're after a game that draws you into its story, allows you explore large amounts of ground reasonably quickly, gives you varied, interesting quests and gets you through the character development in a semi-interesting and enjoyable way, then this isn't it. This is hours of grind interspersed with toying around with skills which are, btw, very well done in themelves.
People will probably post decrying this and enumerating all Ryzom's great and innovative features and they are probably all right - except that for many people, Ryzom is going to get tired v. quickly and to my mind, if you're having to labour at a game without enjoyment in order to get somewhere later on, then it's a waste of time. All of it should be fun right from the start.
And this leads me to wonder, whatever happened to just killing monsters with your friends for fun? I get what you're saying. I play in a guild, but with a real friend a big portion of the time, and we just team up and go kill monsters together, switching roles to advance all our skills. I think this kind of game is spoiling me, Im starting to despise quests. Just getting online and killing monsters with your friends is fun. Well for me anyway.
One thing about the story though, the game's lore is heavily influenced by players and player made racial governments, and this is helped by the gms who create RP events. Its really cool.
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.
I'm a huge Ryzom fanboi. With that said I agree with you.
Ryzom is a game that basically turns back the clock. Its a massive mob grind, a massive gathering grind or crafting grind.
The entire game is designed in the old school way of doing things.
It's a very Niche product and imo us Ryzom fanatics wouldn't have it any other way.
Ryzom has challenging missions, non instanced raid areas, Roaming Bosses, ffa pvp zones, arena areas a faction v faction system, Dev run Events, The Ring and much much more but none of that matter if you don't have the social skills to team up.
A team of three can grind half way to one mastery in like 3 days playing time while a solo player would take damn near a month.
I consider this a massive cock block to players that have grown used to heavy quest focused mmos.
So I say this if you are willing to be social and actual team and enjoy the old style of mmos. You have a home here with Saga of Ryzom. To anyone else you have many other titles to choose from.

Yes, I'd have to agree with both of the previous posters - I think if you had a developed character and were in a guild it would be a good experience. The difficulty, as I say, is getting there. I found it wasn't a lot of fun - I do have a short attention span, that's true, but the game shouldn't be making me work to like it. I think that's the point I'm trying to make. Commercially, too, games like this have a limited future, I fear.
Anyway, good luck to the current players. There's a friendly player base in this game, which is nice. Except fot he Dutch guy who told me I was a "dike moder focker" when he ignored my warning and died three seconds later....eejit!
Right on guys, I'm just another person trying to get a little hype for this game. It seems the recent spurt of activity might be about as active as this game gets for the rest of it's life. That's why your right gracey, it's not always very fun(the pursuit of my crafting skills keeps me busy at this point) from lvls 50-200 or so cuz most guilds are at that high lvl doing things. There's not too many in the middle people. Everyones a newb or a vet. If more people played this wouldn't be the case. There would be more fun to be had in the middle levels. Oh well, I find some new person every once in a while that's around my lvls and mob around with em. I also found that not doing everything and focusing on say magic, is more fun for me, not solo friendly though. Honestly I'm quite distracted by the chronicles of spellborn right now, another decent game thats quest based instead of sandbox with a pretty great combat system. No ones ever on though . I alternate. Word guys^^^ thx for posting on my cheesy thread. Liked yours too rockgod.
