Hi,

I am considering playing darkfall main thing that is putting me off is I am unsure how  the game is to new players as it is a year or so old now will i be a long way behind everyone, will it take a long time to get my skills to a point where i can participate in pvp without getting killed really easily, is there a fair amount of new players in the game, are the guilds open to new players or are they shut off to existing players who are known and skilled. I couldnt find a price for the game after a brief look around the website, I know there is a $1 trial but i dont think i could grasp the game in 7 days and get to a point were i could find enjoyable pvp in that amount of time.

thanks

The game is grindy.  When you say compete in PVP what exactly do you mean?  Your skills, and base stats will be behind everyone.  Even months from now you will be behind to some degree.  You will die a lot in the beginning to gankers and even mobs.  If you get into some group PVP you can play some role.

To put it bluntly, the game isn't very forgiving and the community are mostly jerkoffs.  I have played for a few weeks and do enjoy it, but there are also times where I just want to delete it from my harddrive.  The grind needs to be toned down.  You will have to kill thousands of mobs, literally, to get your skills to a descent level.  Their AI for the mobs is actually semi descent.  It will avoid your range attacks, try to kite you if your melee, and call for help.  This is cool at first, but after you realize just how many you have to kill, you will wish they just ran up to you and died.

Thanks for the reply, i was just after a general time frame to get skills up to a resonable level, a long grind doesnt worry me at all i have plenty of time to play atm due to illness and i am looking for a non carebare challenging game i really enjoy pvp which is y i was leaning towards darkfall. I just wanted to make sure that it is possible to still get skilled up even if it is challenging and to be able to get into a guild, I have been reading up on the game and i think i am going to give it a go getting sick of wow clones and 1-2 month max lvl games and need something to play while waiting for new games in the next year or so. might see u there.

I have only played for a couple of days and I suck at pvp (and all twitch combat etc.). Today my noob protection went down the hill and I was pk:ed, this however was the best to happen to me yet since I started talking to the guy who killed me three times in a row, he was very helpful and we discussed the UI and other things.

So far the community is very good, helpful and the clan NEW is great for learning the ropes. Grindy, yes if you aim at being a top pvp:er. If you on the other hand just play the game and take it for what it is I think you will enjoy yourself.

I had not even considered DF until about a week ago, but I have been very impressed. It is a game like no other and I think you will feel pretty fast if it is for you or not.

I paid for the trial.  I liked what I saw, reminded me very much of UO but only two things annoyed me, 1: slow running, you run as if you are in tar and 2: there aren't many people around.

it will take an average plaeyr 1-2 months to be on equal footing with the top players in a group.

there is much whining about stats.  The reality is that they make very little difference.  Player Skill > character skill > gear > stats.  But they all add up.  If you focus on getting a single skill to a competitve level befoe you move to the next you will progress quite quickly.

This is not even remotely true. It will take a hardcore player around 3 months to be on equal footing with the top players in a group. It will take an average player around 4-5 months to do the same. It will take a casual player 6 months to a year...

And stats do make a big difference. They aren't the only factor, but they are a big factor.

    Actually no.

Considering I just power leveled about 5 guys alst weekend to ~50 mastery I have a very good idea what it takes.  I watch people of all levels pvP and sparr all the time and you idiots whining  about stats have zero clue.

When you don't have your binds setup, you do't know how to combat heal, you use crappy weapons  you will get rolle.  Then you will goto the boards and whine about "the grind."  Learn the game and stop blaming the game for your lack of understanding.  The game certainly has  a learning curve but it is not more than a 1-2 month level up for an average player who focuses.
