Thank you for proving my point while not even realizing what it is.

This made me LOL. It's enetertaining how easy it is to get a rise out of people by simply picking a name like that, as if that tells you everything you need to know about a person. I do the same sometimes. While i usually stick to a certain naming set, usually involving Kaiser, sometimes out of boredom, or due to having too many alt toons, ill use stupid names too. Like in WAR I had toons like Lickmygrundle, Smellmygoatee, Shytinyomouf, Tong Mcfartbox, etc. One of the best though was a guy i used to have in my clan back on FPS games for a few years who always used the name MyDick. The results were pretty entertaining, things like "You just got beat by MyDick". Some may think those things are childish and do things liek ruin immersion for them, but when it comes down to it, the majority of us are playing games for 1 reason, to have fun / be entertained. If you cant have a decent sense of humor and are offended by a simple word or 2 on a screen from some random person youll never know in real life, then online gaming really isnt for you. You should find a hobby that doesnt involve other people and allows you to control everything.

Funny thing too is, look at all the people getting offended by your post, when they know nothing about you. For all they know you could be black and using that name. Ive known plenty of people to use "racist" remarks against their own race/color, including offensive names. Hell, i make fun of my own race just a smuch as any other. Its so amusing watching people get their panties in a twist over something so ridiculous. Welcome to both the real world and the online world. Neither revolves around you, your morals, your beliefs, or your opinions. The sooner you learn that and get over yourself, the sooner youll start actually having fun and enjoying both worlds mor einstea dof just needlessly finding something to cry about every chance you get.

You need to grow up too.

It's funny because I laughed at Kaisers post especially the name list as I understand this exact type of humour. Am I a 13 year old? no. Am I immature? yah sure, but i've played serious names and funny names, and in the end, when I get killed as Arthurian or some other serious name is sucks alot more than being killed as Sackhandler for some reason. I'm old enough to be past all the bullshit and realize I just want to play to have fun and not to pretend that I am really some powerful wizard from another land. ;)

Funny names are fine and dandy. I'm not against naming your character Bloodydeuchebag for all I care, as long as it's not a name created with the intent to insult or disrespect people of different races and cultures. Respect for your fellow man/woman.

Thats kind of the point i was originally getting at though... whats offensive to you, may not be offensive to others, and who are you to declare what everyone else feels? And most importantly, you dont know anything about the person using the name. The guy running around with a name like "Ikillcrackers" could very well be the grand wizard of the KKK, and the guy running around with a name like "ibeatniggers" could very well be a civil rights activist and preacher. Now those are kind of extreme, but point is, you dont know who they are, what their beliefs are, what race they are, etc they are not you, and you really have no right to say what they can and cannot do or what they should find acceptable or offensive. Ive dated a black woman who was more racist against her own race than any white person i know, and im dating a mexican woman who picks on her own race just as much as others, while others would want to throw a race riot at the mere mention of some of the things she says. Ive also dated an Asian woman who was very anti-derogatory remarks towards any race, including whites. Everyone is different, and you cant please everyone, so why even try? Just have fun and enjoy life, do as you please, and worry less about something as simple as words and youll find yourself much more relaxed.

Personally, I could not care less about the lore of the game or making names that fit within it. I use names which I find cool or fitting the class I chose.

I understand where you are coming from. I really do. I'm not going to try and lecture you. I just believe that if you are going to think along those lines and feel that people can't judge you based on your name you should understand as well that for every one of those that wouldn't take the N' word offensively there are five others who would, which is why it's generally accepted that we don't say it. No matter what your feelings are behind the word, unless you are black yourself, you have no right to qualify or trivialize its meaning to others.

I would never joke about your grandma for instance, because even though you seem to be an ignorant twat, I respect you enough not to want to 'seriously' insult you or her.

Im actually quite mature most of the time like at work, but i do have a sick/twisted sense of humor, and am not phased by much of anything that others would find offensive, least of all from some random douche in a video game. which is why my opinion is what it is on the subject. Problem is, youre doing (or implying that others do) exactly what you shouldnt be doing, and taking what others say, or use as a name in a video game as a personal attack against your race or family. I could understand if someone started messaging you saying something like "i hate you and your entire black family and want to kill them all in a fire", and you taking offense to a personal attack like that, but to take something not directed personally at you and turn it into a personal attack is what i find childish. I see someone with a name like "ihate[insert race/gender/sexual orientation here]" and i think to myself, well good for them, wtf do i care.

You probably missed my last post, I just want to direct you back to it. I do understand what you are saying, but I think that with the amount of people on the internet we all should try and keep from showing the worst side of ourselves even in jest.

Heh, yeah just saw it. I agree with the not showing the worst side of ourselves thing, but offensive names/words are certainly not the worst side of us. My whole opinion on the subject basically comes down to, theres millions of other, worse things going on, worrying about words, especially in a game, should be the least of our concerns. Just think of all the time & energy people have spent trying to get things censored because they find a simple word offensive, yet they dont go crusading against actual massive racial killings taking place around the world. Id think things like that would be closer to the top of people's "this is offensive and we need to change it" list, not petty words.

Not directing that at you or anything, just in general thats the way our society tends to act.

I like the discussion this has caused but I want to clarify a few things.

The point of my original post was to show through responses how people completely jump to conclusions based on names. Right off the bat, 2 (maybe more) people put me on their block list just because they couldn't read past my character's name. Now, the name was a trap whose purpose was to show how a fair amount of people will close off all chances of a relationship based on something as trivial as a character name.

Now this is something that I could never understand. Does a name reflect a percentage of a person's attitude? Possibly, and most often yes, but how could a name even begin to grasp something as huge as a person's identity or personality? For all you know, my kid typed in "Colonel Fart" as my character name and i've been too lazy to change it. Or maybe I get a kick out of watching my character named "Sodomic Nun" whack people with swords. Sure, this may show one side of my personality, but it's definitely NOT enough information for you to decide that you never want to be acquainted with me.

...Which brings me back to my argument that names reveal such a small percentage of a personality that they might as well be ignored. Why should I care if you like to call yourself "x" or "y"? We're all adults here and we've dealt with profanities before and it's assumed that in a T or M rated game, everybody's old enough to realize that names have little meaning.

This is the point I was trying to make as well. First impressions - like someone's name they've chosen - do matter, yes. Yet (at least) 2 people won't even see this post, because they've jumped to a hasty judgment based solely on that name (which wasn't even real, it turns out). That's their loss. The only time I jump to such a conclusion is when a guy's name is jfaoitjaowhrw - he's a gold seller or a bot.

It seems the discussion has shifted from "stupid" names to "offensive" names now, thanks to your first post. The OP knew that he couldn't do anything about "stupid" names, so he's jumping on the obvious bandwagon to attack "offensive" names. Now we get into the discussion of what is offensive, are people overly sensitive nowadays (YES), etc. OP, I answered your question back on page 2. I suggest you hinder any further discussion, because this might get ugly.

And please, no one say "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." Tzeentch, the Chaos God of Change, knows that words (revelations that are so perfect that only the strongest minds in the universe can comprehend them) hurt. A lot. They can destroy planets and rip apart the minds of daemons. So don't start with that "words are harmless" bull.

I have not jumped any bandwagon, as you put it. I have been talking about stupid names and I am still talking about stupid names. Would you consider offensive names not stupid? Read my posts, reread my posts, maybe reread them again and you might see that I have been asking and saying the same thing from the start untill I gave the conclusion I came to from the replies given. Trying to make it out as if I have lost a fight and jumped on a different bandwagon to get an easy win... there was no fight to begin with! I asked why people use such moronic names and that question has been answered.

Then the whole question was flawed from the start, because "stupid" is pretty varied. We had names like fjaotiwjeorwjier (nonsensical), xxxxxlegolasxxxxx (uncreative), the one jako made up (clearly offensive), and some that are lore-breaking but that convey some kind of message (like Iownyougood) all included under that broad umbrella of "stupid" names.

Glad your question was answered, though, even though it was pretty vauge.

I played Call of Duty for a while under the alias of "a potato." You killed a potato. A potato killed you. That may be "stupid," but I got a little chuckle out of it. I don't know why, exactly, but I don't care. It was fun.

Your beating a dead horse.  Most would like to see some relevant, not necessarily to the games lore, but to naming in general.

But dev's will never really police names that are utterly rediculous and non-sensical unless they are racially charged or as bad; i.e. a really bad name.

not true.  SWG when it was a game that the devs actually cared about, was very strict about their naming policy.  It was only towards the CU that they started getting desperate and letting the asshats do whatever it was they pleased in an effort to get subs.  And the game suffered for it.  Prior to the CU SWG probably had the all time best community of any game I have played, and no, it wasn't my first MMO (far from it in fact) and it won't be my last.

Sorry, reading the Grey Knights Omnibus... and waiting for the WAR40k MMO.

It was fun.

The use of that "broad umbrella""  of stupid names is something that annoys me in rpg's, I wondered why people use those names in such games. Pretty clear question to me.

Anyway, I have my answers and this topic had no other purpose than getting those answers so I consider it a succes.

    Thanks everyone.

I dont think people are overly sensitive nowadays not at all.  However I do think that there is a distinct narcissistic streak that is on the rise where people purposefully go out of their way to fly in the face of decency and common courtesy all in an effort to please themselves.  It is entirely about self-gratification and if it can be gotten at the cost of someone else then that is all the better, couple that with the anonymity of the internet and you have a perfect storm of asshatdom.

Do you quit a game over every annoyance? The fact that it annoys me a lot and that it breaks my immersion does not mean I have to give up on the genre completely.

I am sure you are correct about that reaction some people would give, you always meet an asshat or two wherever you go.

Looking at your other comments so far it seems you think you need to read up on the entire lore to come up with a decent name. Do you really think you need to do that to come up with something more fitting than for example Killerdaddy?

I don't think i need to do anything. If i want to name my char killerdaddy, i will name him killerdaddy. And i dont think i need to care about if someone is ticked off by it.

Why do you shame yourself by picking such a stupid name?

    I really don't get it...

Because not everyone cares about LORE.

You don't have to care about the lore to pick a name that fits it. Go play a singleplayer game and you can name your character whatever you want, nobody will care since only you play the game. The moment you enter a multiplayer game there are other people to think about as well. Why go out of your way to ruin their fun?

Hey, sounds to me like you've never heard of the possibility that some human beings may not play MMORPG's because they want to play it for the same reasons you want to. Some of us humor ourselves with silly names because it doesn't matter, it's so easy to simply remove yourself from the presence of a person with a name that is bothering you.

If you let something as simple as me running around as a freaking Orc fighting gigantic magic casting dragons, but with my name tag being "Fishtaco" annoy you than by god it sounds pretty hard to please you.

i just think of all the issues within the MMORPG community that this would be the least of most peoples' worries.

People don't have to play the game the same way I do, I just don't want them going out of their way to ruin my fun!

You say it doesn't matter, I tell you otherwise. It does matter what name you pick. I am no lore fanatic, I don't mind normal names that don't really fit the lore completely. I do mind names that are absurd because it ruins my playstyle. Serieus names that fit the lore do not ruin your playstyle, does it?

I am not hard to please, just don't pick a moronic name and act decent towards others.

Ofcourse to you this is a small issue, you don't care about immersion! For those of us that do care about that find names just as important as class balance is important to pvpers.

Solution. Choose a game with RP and Non-RP servers seperate, not to mention GM's that enforce the lore ran environment.

Why do you care?  They pay the 15$ a month don't they?    Seems like a silly thing to be  angry over.

Solution: Don't use offensive or lame names for your characters, and you can play any game on any server.

Guess which one is easier and less restrictive?

I go even further and report any name that is violation of the game's TOS policy and have had quite  few changed because of it. I agree with you but it would help if they would actually enforce the rules on RP servers. Most of us probably have to deal with enough oxygen thieves during our day to day lives and it is nice to find a RP server with a more mature community. I don't even RP I just prefer the communities I usually find on the RP servers. Granted even I admit I am not the easiest person to get along with but I at least have enough basic human decency not to go out of my way to be an annoyance to others. For example people who like to go to RP servers with names like Ipwnurmom and deeznutz. To me it is a matter of respect for your fellow gamer. Going to an rp server with a name like those i mentioned is a classic example of why our society is flawed, we have lost all basic respect for each other.

Ah...but the difference is the names I report are generally in violation of the TOS, therefore I have an aire of rightiousness in my attitude.  In a game like EVE CCP doesn't care about such things, so I just stick to /ignore. (though sometimes I've been known to 'accidently' shoot fleet mates with names I find particularly offensive)
