They probably just saved this game by offering free play. It was dying a slow death
No, it wasn't.
It absolutly wasn't. It was widely believed that the game was doing quite well, and most of my guildies have been noticing a very healthy population. Very few people that actually PLAYED the game with any regularity thought the game was dying. Of course, with this horrid decision to kill the game, it will die. What a waste.
Wow, are you always so optimistic? Damn, the change hasn't even been implemented yet and you already know that it's going to kill the game? Or are you just one of those old people that can't handle change? Either way, it's going to happen weather you want it to or not, and in all honesty, you don't know what is going to happen. Have you seen it happen before? No. It happened to DDO and it only helped the game. That alone only contradicts your prediction of what will happen. Get over it or leave, cause the genre isn't going to stop for you.
Not really surprised they are making LOTRO f2p. With the runaway success of DDO now, especially since it passed up GW to be #2, they are probably hoping for the same success here. I admit that once it goes f2p, I will probably give it a try again as it didn't impress me much when I was in the beta to subscribe.
They said that it was unlikely that it would go the Turbine store route but "never say never".
They also said LOTRO wouldn't go F2P.
They did indeed. LOTRO was conceived, designed and launched with the full intention of it being a subsciption-only game for its entire life. And then DDO went f2p out of nessessity, and was a huge success. Suddenly the hybrid model used there was seen to be viable in the western market, and lo....

I think you are misunderstanding my response.
It is not that they are trying to appease their players and saying "it will never go free to play".
They are saying that for the time being it will not go the free to play route simply because the amount of work needed to change the game over is essnetially not worth it.
That doesn't mean that it wasn't considered and it doesn't mean that they won't do it if they can make it happen in a way that is cost effective.
So this has nothing to do with "they said lotro would never go f2p and yet they lied". If people would like to discuss that then that is another discussion.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
More like a IV drip to hold the game over until "The Hobbet" hits the big screen and resparks the franchise and this gimmick game. You don't go from p2p to f2p because things are good.
R.I.P LOTR-Every 12 year old who's parents won't buy him a WoW account is going to be playing now. It might save the game financially but it certainly means the death of the community so many players loved. Will the last adult to leave please turn off the lights?
Unlike DDO Lord Of The Rings is actually a good mmo. This is great news and I cant wait to play. Now if they just make an open pvp server.
There will never be an open pvp server of lotro,
Lotro is a pve game, so the main focus is on pve. They follow the lore.
Unless they make a second faction so you can pve with the orcs from morder, but I don't see that happen
White Hand vs. Mordor...
Actualy the us game will never have open pvmp. However the chineese one will. We keep hearing reports, and they have also been posted in the forums onlly to be locked and pruned.
PVMP was not well done anyway it was added last round of beta to placste a few, and to be honest has been for the most part totaly ignored by the dev staff.
One VALID issue (feel the need to highlight that based on how much inaccurate and untrue info is being tossed around by the doubters) is that Turbine points from DDO don't transfer over to LOTRO and vice versa.
I personally think that's crap, since there are any number of other f2p companies where the currency is good in every game they own.
That would only be true if the dollar value for points for each game were the same and that they purchased an equivalent amount of "whatever".
you dont' want to spend 5 dollars in the ddo store and get (for the sake of discussion) 500 points that buys somethign that is rather mundane but that same 500 points makes one wealthy beyond imagining in LOTRO.
A bit extreme but you get my point.
Or in my case, since I'll stay subbed and I'm perfectly fine with LotRO as it is in terms of convenience goodies...
...I'd use those points on my DDO freebie account to unlock content. So I'd essentially subscribe to one game to slowly "buy" the other.
Certainly that would be in my interest, but probably not Turbines. I'd love for Turbine buxx to be for both games, but they'd get the short end of the stick.
Selling lifetime subscriptions up to the day when they announce going free to play probably hurts the company's credibility, though.
As long as one doesn't have a fundamental problem with the turbine store it then is still a great value.
Provided you plan to play for years.
You still don't have to pay a sub fee which then means the game will eventually become cheaper the longer you play and you still get access to points to spend in the shop if you are so inclined.
"I" don't have a lifetime sub because I retain the right to cancel my sub if I find that the game goes to places that I don't like. I assume that people who do purchase lifetime subs are generally "ok" with changes to their games, probably easy going about it AND want to save money.
Because, if they aren't ok with changes and aren't easy going then they really need to rethink their stance on buying lifetime subs.
Except that Turbine didn't do that with LOTRO. Lifetime subs have been absent for at least a few months now. The reality is that people are upset that they CAN'T buy lifetime subs now because they like the new deal so much.
Gotta admit, as a big critic of lifer subs, I'd be tempted to get one, now. If they implement this right, they've likely guaranteed LotRO will be around for quite some time. And with 500 points coming in every month, I could even take a break, and when I came back, I might have enough points for the latest expansion... or at very least cut the cost down.

WTF, Make Asheron's Call free before lotro...damnit :P To believe the only turbine game I play is not going f2p lol.
I dont like to use the word free to play as it is a lie. It is more like an unlimited trial, with subscription fees and in shop items.
There is nothing free unless you like locked content.

This is because the technology behind Asheron's call is old and they would have to rewrite a lot in order to make it fit.
They said that it was unlikely that it would go the Turbine store route but "never say never".
