I'm not quite sure what it is, but can someone explain what it is and when it starts?

That's from Steam's APB page. Looks like some Beta time for pre-orders....I'm looking forward to it.
If I understand this right, it sounds like a big joke to me...
9 Days and you only get to play basically for 5 hours...?
It is a joke I think 5 hrs isn't enough time over a 9 day span nor is 10 hrs as early access, but they're trying to limit those that do get the head start, so they're not way ahead of everyone else at launch and so forth. Plus I plan to be spending quite a lot of my time working with the customization tools they have during that 9 days , because as I understand it they're wiping the key to the city chars only the early access characters will be kept but thats just what I heard. All in all its a tease before the launch of the title.
I don't know how it works as I've never played...but if the gametime clocks doesn't start ticking until you are actually in a scenario 5 hours might actually be a decent amount of time.
Your characters are also deleted after the Key to the City Event. So it would seem there is no point to that. And 10 hours seems pretty fair, from what ive heard it is not that hard to rank up in this game especially if you roll with a decent group. Of course that can be said about any MMO.

Seriously, 5 hours isnt enough to get to grips with it at all! - And the social district is not some place you can spend time add infinitum, it d/c's regularly between 2 - 10 minutes. and usually when your in the middle of a master design.
any word on when you can reg you key for kttc or create an account for that matter.

To clear up abit here. This is NOT the early access bit. This is a DEMO, 5 hours in the action districts, and 24 hours in the social district.
First of all, this is not an open beta event, that one ended several days ago.
secondly. i believe that it's actually a good idea. When you have 5 hour restriction in the action districts, you wont play it shamelessly for nine days until you're bored with it, and since the social district has unlimited gametime you can get to know the community, set up clans / crews and customize your character to your hearts content.
Though five hours are alittle short, i still understand why they're doing it.

A few hours ago, my playtime ended. I used my 5 hours of playtime in the action district. I had a blast, but now the wait begins for the release I guess...
News flash people! They are giving demo keys out daily so its really 5 hours per day limit.
Yeah, but can it be applied to the account you have already? I think not. And I'm not gonna make 8 accounts more:P
Ok, made another account to play with a mate of mine. I didn't get any key from eastore, eventho they said in the email that the key is on top of the email, wasn't there.
