Is history gonna repeat itself?

Vanguard devs tried to make a game for "the future" with high requirements for PCs. FFXIV devs are now doing the same. One of the key elements to bringing in more players to a new mmo is making sure they can actually play it. This way you have a larger pool of potential customers. Forcing players to upgrade their systems for lots of $$$ on top of the price of the game itself isn't smart, especially in tough economic times. I bet anyone there will be  a flood of angry posts from people who can't play the game, just like there was for vanguard. Afterwards, there will be a surge of bloodelf paladins logging on wow servers.

Yea but many months later... and some people don't have or want a ps3.

tho with the track record of MMOs on the current gen consoles as of late... I wouldn't be surprised if the console version never happens

Well thats kind of the nature of the best really.

One of the things I enjoy about PC gaming is the ability to improve where in a console your stuck with the platform.

Want to play on a higher resolution? Get a better card or monitor.

Better sound? Nice sound card or good set of headphone/speakers.

For me, I enjoy the ability to improve the game experience by upgrading.

The Minimum specs for FF is fairly low.

Some don't, lots do. They will release it on PS3, more money = more better. Consoles are much more popular than PC Games, therefore they will release to a much much larger market of gamers than most of the current games on the market can. FFXI was released in 2003 and back then, they pretty much relied on the FF gamers. Today, they have several hundred times more MMO players out there than they did in 2003.

Also, this thread is about history repeating itself and the OP was talking about Vanguard. Vanguard had a whopping 0 followers before the game was announced, where as the FF series has some of the most dedicated gamers on the market. I'm sure quite a few people have bought a PS3, just for the FF series.

Why, are blood elf paladins the class to be now days?

I agree with this though, I think the game is a system hog and wont appeal to the masses untill 2015.  By that time there will have been another 2 or 3 ff out with a new mmo coming out, which only makes me ponder "how many Final fantasys is one to many?" and when will it all end...

dont know really. not sure what the flavor of the month is now in wow. i havent played that game in 2 years.

actually Vanguard had a VERY LARGE following. vanguard was made by the makers of everquest. alot of people thought it was gonna be the next gen everquest. same like ffxiv is the next ff mmo.

Well i guess that's also something that makes WoW so popular , it has decent graphics and doesn't require a high performing performance (unless you're in dalaran on peak hours or a full WG , than you better have a wtf-awesomesause PC).

While this issue might sound trivial you'd be surprised by the amount of gamers who have below average machines.

     This

Vanguard had a built in audience the second Brad left SOE to form his own company.

As a Eq1 player, I was one of the people interested in game. When it came to light all the problems going on, and Microsoft dropping support....it raised folks eyebrows.

SOE socked some more money into it, but eventually wanted a return on investment.

So although FF and Brad both had followers, I seriously doubt all the issues happen with FF that were going on behind the scenes at Sigil Games.

I heard that many Japanese don't own PCs, certainly not as much as Americans do.
    .
They play console games. FF is a console game. The amount of Japanese subscribers to FF is significant.
    .
They released a version of FF MMO for the PC, but it's not very user friendly. If you're going to play that game the console is the way to go.
    .
The new version might be different. I'm waiting to see.

    I know.

But how big was the following BEFORE it was Announced?

    0

You can't be a follower before you know it exists.

People were going to play FF14 when FF11 was launched. Just like they will play FF19, or FF20, or FF329. Because FF is a series and people have been fans since FF1.

PS3 would probably be the system to play as like stated the requirements are dang high, even for gamers. I just hope they actually release on PS3 or PC guys are gonna get the short end of the stick as some of the features that annoy them are in specifically because of the PS3.

Go to Graphics Options, turn settings down to medium or low...then press play. i don't see an issue. The game will start you out on suggested settings as it is.

From what I know, there isn't much in the regard of options besides basic things like resolution and what not. Also note that some games even on low are resource hogs, thats one of the great things I like about unreal engine as you can actually scale the graphics down quite a bit and have an actual "low" setting.

That is one of the main problems with people playing games these day's.

We used to have just gamers who knew our hobby cost money, there for we knew if we wanted to keep playing the newest games we needed to upgrade our systems. Obviously we also knew we never upgraded just for one game but for the future of our hobby which includes mostly many games.

These day's anyone with a computer seems to call him/her self a gamer but in these day's they want it all and start whining when they can't have it all or need to upgrade. They even call it games forcing them to upgrade.....lol, where any gamers knows the only person forcing anything will ALWAY's be that person who wants to play games him or her self, no gamecompany or game will EVER force anything on anyone.

It's a shame really, but hey that's how it is these day's
