Oldschool/real MMORPG fans, there is hope(FFXIV)

LotosSlayerLotosSlayer Member Posts: 247

There's a lot of oldschoolers on this site but surprisingly I don't see much talk of FFXIV, so I thought I'd start this thread. If you are a fan of real MMORPGs, and miss how MMORPGs used to be such as EQ, DaoC, FFXI, UO, SWG, AO, AC, etc. before WoW came along, there is a chance we might get another game like them. That game is FFXIV, there hasn't been one since 2003. We might finally get a MMO that focuses on grouping, challenging gameplay, that virtual world feel and that isn't made for kids, people who play 30 minutes a day and console gamers.

Get over whatever you think about no jumping, no swimming, slow looking combat, no PvP, anime style, etc. You can't know whether you like/don't mind/dislike it until you try it. I thought I wouldn't like some of FFXI's features, but I loved the game. I thought I would love WoW, I quit after a few months.

I think every other thread I see on the recent posts is an FFXIV thread.  It has a huge following on this site.  Not everyone really likes how it has failed to advance their level of freedom when it comes to movement.

In short I predict your post will cause a riot.

Its a lot like 11 but it has a lot of fundamental differences.

Hmm, well I would like an oldschool MMORPG...  but not one that is purely PvE. If given the choice, I don't think I'd play Oldschool EQ again, even for the socialization, because I just really need that PvP goal at the end like DAoC had. And yeah, not a big fan of anime, but thats something I can live with.

JRPGs suck. Their mmos suck even worse. Hope you like a long grind.

I am following FFXIV, but I disagree that it is an "old-school" MMORPG. It is a new age MMO where you can get to max level solo if you so choose.

the better rewards are in grouping, but make no mistake, FFXIV is nothing like old-school games were. In those old games there were hell levels, twink posibilities, insanely hard encounters (due to programing errors) and a slew of other things, that, while were bad, gave the games characters. Todays' games do not have that, and FFXIV is a good example of this.

FFXIV, however, is a very fun MMORPG with no PvP to cause it harm (yes, PvP kills games cause only the few enjoy it, while the rest suffer). I will be enjoying it from day -8 :-P

You mean I hope I like a game where the leveling is actually a part of the game and its not just a rush to endgame to try to get into a L33T guild and get Phat loots and then wait 6-8 months for the next endgame content to be released and do it all over again with the possible expantion fee costs of up to 60 bucks?

Yeah I'll take my game where the journey is actually imoprtant, thank you.

I dont know if you realize this but you just told people that even though they dont like the ingredients they should eat it anyways... some people think water should play a role in a virtual world and cliff sides arent just to look at and maybe, just maybe players want the ability do jump over a small fence instead of running five miles around it. I never saw Strider come to a stream and say, 'Damn Frodo, looks like we'll have to find a bridge or something so we can cross over this four foot deep water..." Maybe im just being silly, but id have to agree.

There is going to PvP introduced, not at launch, but it will be there as per recent interviews by Tanaka.

Also as for the OP you might be surprised if you go into FFXIV looking for an old school MMO. If you ahve been following the news at all regarding the title, SE continually keeps hyping the guildleve and armory system both of which are supposedly designed to appeal to the casual market which they are looking at closely.

Nah, I will continue playing EQ2 until Rift: Planes of Telera comes out if thats ok with you?

It has jumping, swimming, nice speeded combat, consentual PvP, great western art style, plus a stack of other stuff that make me go mmmm.

And thats coming from an 'oldschooler' :)

Rift does look good..... althought i am going to play FFXIV too.... may the best game win.

Pls dont place UO or AC in same list as FFXI its insulting:p

UO and AC are sandbox games they came way before FFXI and are still superior to FFXI and we can name one thing only PVP.

FFXI is not only super slow combat it also dont have pvp its pure pve mmo and mostly designed for console ps2 its crap plain and simple.

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

I love that there is no PVP in the game! PVP is fine and all but it gets old to me pretty fast, specially when you have some guy that is LV 100 and kills lv 5's, yeah that made you feel epic cause you just killed a lv 5, go outside and kill you some innocent squirels I am sure that will make you feel more manly. Now if you are facing people your own level and you totaly own I salute you cause your leet in PVP!

The one problem I see with PVP is the fact that if it is not done right it ruins the game, one if the game is more centered around PVE and you start screwing with that cause PVP is being fixed then you just alienated your PVE croud and the same way the other way. WoW is a good example of this, PVP is fine if you like it but it has changed the whole PVE experience cause they had to please the PVP croud. I have no beef with pleasing people in a game just take your time and do it right, hell why not just make it so that PVP does not even effect the PVE at all or vise versa cause you will alienate both camps when you do that.

What's funny is FFXI doesn't belong in that list as it's nothing like those other games you've surrounded it with, and neither is FFXIV.

While I think it's great you're looking forward to the game, let's try to keep the ridiculousness to a minimum, please. Especially SWG ( even after the NGE ) and Anarchy Online, both of which make FFXI and FFXIV both seem hollow in comparison.

If you read anypost from last week you'd see that we talk about it all the time. Even jump swim threads are heavily followed lol. BTW mentioning WoW in the OP just opens the troll gate Get Ready!!!!!!!

No.. I'm saying don't assume you won't like something before you try it. So many people are saying they won't even try FFXIV because of those things which is ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if people didn't even notice you can't jump 'cause they're having fun playing an MMO which finally has some damn grouping.

4 out of the 5 types of Guildleves are group ones. What does the armory system have to do with casual?

UO and SWG are sandboxes, FFXI is a themepark but they're still similar in a lot of ways, or atleast closer to them than modern MMOs.

How exactly is FFXI similar to UO? I haven't played it so I'm just curious.

I transitioned from Everquest 1 to FFXI, and found them to be very similar in how they played. FFXI was a bit easier than EQ IMO, but still had a good level of difficulty, involving quests, and group oriented gameplay. With any luck at all, FFXIV will be extremely different than the MMOs we've seen release in the last 6 years.

You aren't a real MMORPG fan, you're a figment of my imagination on the interwebz.

I'm interested in the game, but not so much in your method of trying to hype it up.

i dont see how FFXIV is anything like the mmos you described.....anything.....i cant even see any correlation other than its a mmorpg.

No jumping, no swimming means lack of emersion.  Slow looking combat means its boring.  No PvP means whats the point.  Anime style means its eastern and smacks of asian grinding, no thanks got burnt with Aion.  In fact  "I can know" what I like before trying it since its my mind and not yours, thank you very much.

Theres no way ill play this game, and alot of modern MMO enthusiasts agree.  Leave FF for the asian markets, as for me I want viscreal in your face combat, unknown dynamic challenges and a Dev team that is located in the states that know what the western markets want.  Which is why my next MMO will be RIFT.

Another plus for FFXIV, it won't have morons like the two above posters.

Have fun doing mindless tasks for NPCs alone.

you have not answered my question....show me what this game has in common with those you listed outside of the usual mmorpg features.
