I appologize ahead of time if anyone else has had this idea or if indeed this is happenning and I missed out on the info.
This is just a simple question, more than reasons why it should be done. And so, it shall be put to a vote.

I don't think it would work very well, but that might just be me.
(BUMP)
Could the Starcraft lore/story work in regards to making an MMORPG? This could be taken into the depth of current factions/races from the RTS game.
The question to me is what do you play as. What's the playable class/race each side.
tabula rasa?
still prefer NATURAL SELECTION
now: GW2 (11 80s).
Dark Souls 2.
future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
"Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
Could it work? Sure it did, as an April Fools joke a few years back.
It would be WoW's #1 competitor.

Guess we'll see how well something like that would do when Warhammer 40k comes out. I don't think it will last though because of the theme.
If any RTS should be made into an MMO outside of WoW which has been done already.... Command and Conquer! I have loved the C&C stories and lord if they made more awesome cut scene videos I would be happy.
But since WoW did it so well I dont think anyone could top the idea of RTS to MMO again.
Well it's an IP designed for games, so of course it could work. It's a universe teeming with conflict, with many interesting races and factions. Furthermore, Blizzard has a superb track record for putting out amazing games so it's probable that a Starcraft MMO could be just as amazing as anything else they've put out.
Heck, just reskin Planetside's gameplay with 3 new races (Zerg/Protoss/Terran) completely new environments to fight over, and you automatically have a MMOFPS title I could see myself putting years into.

Command and Conquer... interesting. Other than Blizard, not sure how WoW is playing into this tread though. Still interesting comment nonetheless.
Warcraft started as an RTS.... Dur lol
Sort of what I was thinking as well, and the main reason why I used a vote at the start of this tread. Especially since the release of SC2, while it's fresh in everyone's mind was the timing behind this tread. From what I can tell so far, there definately seems to be some pulse of interests in these regards.
Its funny, I'm one of a few odd-ball gamers out there that's never played WoW in either MMORPG nor RTS formats. Not making a statement neither in favor nor against, but I just never did for some reason. I think I got hooked on RF-Online and was a choice between that and WoW back so many years ago. If I were a rich person, I'd probably subscribed to both and FFXI also... unfortunately I chose RF back then.

I already wonder why this took a day before someone ask if sc could become a mmo lol.
Everything thats even slightest hyped you guys hope it becomes a mmo specially all these crappy developers like blizzard.
Well whats next diablo mmo im 100% positive someone will ask.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Crappy developers, eh? First of all, Blizzard is one of the most successful developers in the world, and also one of the most quality driven developers. Secondly, who are you to judge a developer's merits, are you a professional developer or a market analyst, I do not think so.
I'll play a dark templar and I'll be invisible.
Ofc it could work, pretty much ANYTHING could work.. pretty much every fucking IP is a MMO today or will be soon.
Just needs abit of tweaking etc.. im sure they could base a MMO of sesame street if they wanted to..
Currently Playing Path of Exile
look at war40k in 2012, if it succeeds Starcraft MMO should succeed aswell...all in all starcraft is war40k's cloned lil brother....
What surprise me is why people are so head over heels with this game.. Between talking to a friend that did the beta and from my experience from playing Supreme Commander 2.. Starcraft 2 isn't much different.. They are basically the same mechanics and layout, same gamestyle, similar graphics, multiplayer online.. etc etc.. Supreme Commander gets a B rating while it's CLONE made by Blizzard gets a screeming A+ for the same game...... WTF? Anymore I'm starting to think Blizzard can hype a piece of geological minerals customer built to you.. aka Pet Rock II........ and make millions..
C&C Universe MMO > SC Universe MMO , just play warhammer ffs

Are you serious? It doesn't sound like you play many RTS strategy games; or any strategy games for that matter. Supreme Commander and Starcraft 2 are NOTHING alike. There are a ton of strategy games that are very similar to SupCom. Not a lot of strategy games are as fast paced as Starcraft 2. The mechanics and layout; nothing alike. The gamestyle; absolutely nothing alike. Graphics? No, not even remotely similar. And multiplayer online? Lol, Starcraft owns the multiplayer. SupCom 1 and 2 were both let downs on how that game was supposed to turn out. Starcraft 1 was a legend, and number 2 will probably be too. And if you think I'm a fanboy or something then you are also completely mistaken there. I didn't play a lot of Starcraft 1, but know a decent amount about the game. I bought SupCom when it was released and played it for awhile, but it didn't compare to Starcraft. Supreme Commander 1 and 2 were flops, nothing more than another clone of the age-old sci-fi RTS genre which was revolutionized originally by Starcraft 1.
Yeah, it could work, like Pacman MMO could work.
Though Blizzard's game worlds are mostly hack jobs, they do a good job with producing solid gameplay out of them.
Admittedly, I am not the least bit interested in the Starcraft universe, and I do think it's a bit of a waste when there are much deeper science fiction worlds out there with sci-fi settings that stand for more than mere excuses for pew-pewing all over the place... Though ultimately it's the "MMO scene leader"s own IP, and until developers come up with engaging MMO gameplay that's not built primarily on combat, I guess I'm out of luck.
Still waiting for that Blade Runner MMO.
Now that was just funny as hell to read.. I will agree with a previous poster.. C&C "OWNS" RTS vs. Starcraft 1 or 2.. My favorite was still C&C Generals w/ Zero Hour expansion, and that was made YEARS ago.. But like I said, I think the fanbois out there will endorse and buy anything with a Blizzard label.. even a pet rock 2.. I'm surprised that Blizzard hasnt' already sold their fans chunks of oxidized copper and call it "Fel Iron" for $19.95 plus S&H.. lmao
Of course it could work... if Warhammer 40K could work then why couldn't Starcraft Universe work?!
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
There's this game called Warcraft that was an RTS that turned into a pretty successful MMO.
