I started playing world of warcraft and I was wondering if I should play as a death knight, they start on lvl 55. Any good or bad things about this class?

Just in case you didn't know. You will need to run a character up to level 40 to unlock the DK class. So you will have plenty of time to study up on the Death Knight.
Now as far as good or bad things about DK's? Just 3 words for you...
DKs have a lot of good talents and are one of the easier classes to solo level though now days most classes can do an adequate job of that. They are also fairly decent for either raiding or pvp if that is your ultimate goal. Only real problem is that there are quite a few of them running about and most are played very poorly.
All that aside they are fun to play and you should give it a shot if you find them of interest.
DKs are the easiest and least interesting class to play in WoW. actually i stand corrected, Dks are the second easiest and least interesting class right behind paladins.
What Respit said, and I would choose a class that is different than the DK to level to 40+ first so you don't get burnt out from playing 120 levels of content with the same sort of character... In which case I would probably avoid melee classes and especially Paladins... unless you REALLY love melee and don't think you'll get burnt out. I would recommend playing something that you can't faceroll to 80 with TBH, but then it's up to you. I think people undervalue playing through the leveling content in WoW for the first time. It's actually fun if you pay attention to the lore (if you're into that at all). Plus there is no substitute for experience. If you don't play a class that makes you stop and think about what you are doing and how you approach things, then many times you end up being that bad player that everyone complains about in PUGs. Don't be that guy...
As for DKs they are pretty powerful characters, and can do well as DPS or tanks if you learn to play them correctly... yes, I believe that they are over-powered and people that play them as their first real character in WoW end up being bad players more often than not. Take some time learning the game, don't just think that you're going to dive headlong into end game once you reach the level cap.

I'll echo what a lot of others have said, but add a little more.
I've played WOW doing high-end raiding in Vanilla (holy priest), Burning Crusade (prot paladin), and now Wrath (Death Knight tank). I also have 4 different alts at 80 and 3 more in the 70 range. Death Knights are a lot of fun to play, but it's true -- but they are somewhat difficult to play *well*. If you already have an old high level character and you're just returning to the game, give it a try. However, recognize that there's a significant stigma attached to DKs for a variety of reasons, and so you'll face a lot of scorn.
Most DKs rolled a DK to avoid having to level, and as it has already been stated, that means they don't learn very much about the class compared to everyone else of the same level. Secondly, DKs tend to roll on EVERYTHING -- tank gear, DPS gear, whatever -- even spellpower gear (which does nothing for them -- but they roll on it anyway). Stick to rolling on the loot you're actually going to use. Finally, get very proficient in your class, and read up on elitistjerks, tankspot, the WOW forums, and a myriad of other places about the DK so you will be recognized right away as being an asset. Many people will assume right off the bat that you don't know what you're doing and that you're just going to stumble around in instances and groups screwing up.
I will say that the DK starting zone experience was amazing, and it leaves me wondering why the other classes don't get the same treatment -- it gives you a chance to learn a lot about the lore of your class and the way you should be playing it. It's a crime that the other 9 classes don't get to have the same experience themselves.
I remember playing one when the expansion came out and frigging they were so easy to play. You could just run u pto how ever many mobs you wanted and owned them all and I love the skill they lets you pull people to you. The only problem I had with the class was I couldn't ever beat a good Paladin, every other class was easy but Paladins always seemed to own me. That was at level 60 though, so it coulda balanced itself out by 80.
Have to agree with everyone, DK's are easy to play to solo and a lot of "new" WoW players pick them because they start out at level 55 after leaving the starting zone so they can jump into the mix a lot faster, already geared in blues. The big downside to that, also as stated by many, is the lack of experience and the lack of story knowledge. You still have to go back to the early zones to level a profession though, which is boring when one is already 55.
I have a level 80 of each class (yes I have been playing a long time and have two accounts). The DK is my least favorite class to play. I actually use it only to farm ore and leather and then it hangs out at the AH the rest of the time.
same as what everyone has said really, there are plenty of DK's running around on any server and the majority don't play the class very well which tends to impact upon the folks that do play the class very well. I have a lvl80 DK and leveled as blood, didn't have any issues whatsoever, could solo most if not all elite mobs for quests. The problem I had with the class is that i just got bored with it, probably because everything was so easy, don't recall having to bandage or take a rest that many times either.
I found DK intensely fun. However, I don't focus on it as much as I do other classes. Not sure why.
That being said, roll one anyway just to experience the DK starting area which is phenomenal. I wish every class could start in a starting zone at that level like that with talent points as rewards. It would solve the utter boredom I have right now of trying to level through vanilla WoW which just sucks, questing wise.
I know Cata will change this...but for how long until Cata becomes boring? Then what?
DKs are fun to play. And a nightmare to play with. Mostly because so many people playing them just can't do it sensibly. Or, as i said a few months ago, "DKs are the new Paladins".
DKs really took the "oh shit, another moron" sigh away from Pallies and Hunters, who filled that niche before as the faceroller class for people who have less skill than a drunk monkey but still want to play "up there" where raids and heroics are being farmed. Now, that's not to say that every DK is a complete tool. There are people who are excellent DKs, who can dish out insane DPS as a DD without even coming close to peeling aggro, who can instantly turn around and replace the tank if he dies. Those people are a true asset to any group and they are few and far between. If you can pull off something like this, you will be remembered.
You're one of the very, very few who are not complete tools who play DKs only for their high solo survivability.
As stated before, it's the stigma Hunters and Paladins suffered from before. Hunter is a class that is insanely easy to solo, you come equipped with tank, healer and dps all rolled into one. Playing a hunter well in a group is a quite nontrivial task. Keeping your pet under control while still dishing out sensible DPS but not peeling aggro is something few hunters can really do. The few who can are usually well known. Same for Pallies and the fact that they can trivially peel aggro, at least if they should not (i.e. when they're DD).
DKs now fall into the same crook that Pallies are in: Very high survivability, great DPS (if played right), but also very easy to peel aggro if they don't watch out. As a tank, a DK in the group is either a true asset and a very comfortable safety belt or a true and absolute nightmare that steals your aggro without a chance to peel it back.

Without knowing what you find important in a class it would be difficult to make any suggestions.

Get as many of them DK bandage things as you can from the starter area though because they help you so much once you enter TBC areas.

Unfortunately, more often than not, the latter.
