Anyone else think this is dreadfully overrated?

Seems like I'm the only one who isn't jumping up and down over this game. It looks decent, but definatly not as great as its made out to be. The classes, do not seem interesting at all, typical jedi/sith, troopers and bounty hunters. Now, everyone wants to be a jedi or sith right? There is the first problem, 90% of the population are going to be jedi or sith, meaning every other class will get neglected so badly. Another problem I have with the game is how over powered are jedi/sith going to be? To OP, and every class will definatly not be played resulting in a fail. Now if the jedi/sith are weakened to much to give other classes a chance, that won't have the Star Wars 'feel" to it at all. It needs a perfect balance but to also still feel like you're in the Star Wars universe. Seems extremely difficult to pull off, and I have strong doubts, that they will. Lastly, it just seems to me like it is a mirror of KOTOR, I understand they are different games and what not, but to me, the differences are'nt big enough to where I'd enjoy this game.

More than a few of us are deeply disappointed by the game-on-rails-for-Gen-Bieber this game seems to be. On the other hand, there are plenty of others who seem to want precisely this comic coloured, spoonfed game - so good luck to them. Maybe it will turn out to be better than we fear.

There are a lot of people that are less than excited about this game but judging from your post I can tell you haven't really done your research.  If you go to the SWTOR forums you can see on the class poll that class distribution is actually pretty even, about 60% force users and 40% non-force users, which is a lot lower than what I would expect.  Bioware already said that force classes won't be OP, the way they're going about it is that if you're a smuggler ect. you're the best smuggler in the galaxy, for story purposes anyway.  The main reason people are so exited about this game is because it's Star Wars AND it's being made by Bioware, Bioware is known for quality games and they have stated that SWTOR will be similar to KOTOR so if you didn't enjoy KOTOR then you might want to look for another game.

Totally not overrated.   In fact, if you look at its rank on this site, it is woefully underrated, below crap like Ryzom, and of the upcomings, Rift is crap on a stick.   SWTOR will blow those out of the water.

As far as the worries about class popularity, classes like smuggler and bounty-hunter will be wildy popular.

As for "comic coloured", as my other post explained, this is incorrect.  This game does not look comic, the screenshots that give this impression are mock-ups.

Finally, it is less like KOTOR and more like Mass Effect.

Seems like you haven't been hanging out a lot around mmorpg.com forums.

SW:TOR is one of the upcoming MMO's that has known a number of the fiercest and most dogged opponents of any MMO the last few months with a number of the most uninformed and insane arguments I've seen used in a while.

So I don't know where you've been hanging out but it's certainly not been in mmorpg.com SW:TOR section, so I'm going to say 'welcome, grab a drink and enjoy the show'  image

Whole Star Wars universe died back after all the new series came out from EP1 to now. Honestly you want a SWG Pre-CU experience you're better off waiting for the emulator to release.

Honestly you're better off waiting and trying it to judge for yourself above taking anyone's advice on this site.

I notice that this is like the only site that does not like SWTOR.

Its like the Fox News of MMO news sites.

Maybe mmorpg.com is the place where SWG Pre-NGE players go to die.

Someone should hold a SWG eulogy... oh wait, they're already doing it themselves every other post image

To address one tiny issue in this thread, for those who say that it is "Star Warsy" for Jedi to be overpowered, please throw in the Episode II DVD and watch the Battle of Geonosis.

hmm maybe a little..  not nearly as overrated as guild wars 2

Ahhh.... but you forget, maybe they think that ep.1-3 is not really canon, too kiddyish, not like ep.4-6.

Besides, if we're talking "Star Warsy" feel and canon, then SWG really wiped its ass with them. At least SW:TOR will be in a timeperiod with a legitimate reason for the amount of Jedi and Sith, but large numbers of Jedi running around (even before CU/NGE) in a timeperiod when there's only a Luke? That's like having masses of Wizards a la Gandalf running around in Middle Earth. Oh, wait...

I'm hoping it does well, into the multi-million subscribers range.

This is shaping up to be the first mega-budget MMORPG, or the last.  A big winner would be a windfall to the MMORPG genre.  We've had far too many "not quite ready for release" titles hit the market and fall short of a major win.  Perhaps this will break that trend.

Most games here vary in rating some .. sometimes there up sometimes there down.. gw has only rose since i been comming here. and the gw fans... the rabit ones anyway are the final nail in the cofin for me every wanting to play that game. Damn i know you like the game but to go on every other forum  and sing its prases while putting all games down is a pain in the ass

I think most games are overrated pre-launch.

That said, with this game most of those who post seem to understand it may not be as great as the devs make it sound. Those following it also seem willing to offer critique on things they're not quite happy about. Which shows most are pretty well grounded on the subject of TOR. Guild Wars 2 on the other hand...

If that game doesn't come wrapped in diamond laced, gold leaf as well as contain the fountain of youth, I smell another AOC brewing, whether the game is good or bad.

Nah, it died with 'The Empire Strikes Back'. The first film was fun, everything since is marketing and pretensous nonsense.

If you go to the swtor.com website and watch Video Documentary #4 video trailer, they talk briefly more about the classess are pretty balanced out, or I could see ppl only being a Jedi/Sith as well.  So it shouldn't matter what class you choose, your adventure should be great with any class you choose.

    I'm picking a Bounter Hunter before I even touch a Jedi/Sith class. =)

GW2 looks fantastically bad anyways, I wouldn't worry about them to much, the new cesspool will keep them occupied.

this whole site is like that, for every single game. its nothing but "hater" vs "fanboi" pointless arguments.

the more popular the game, the more hate it generates. that is just how it is here and i left for a long time because of it.

i never understood people who hate a game so much still follow it so religiously, especially when they are expecting the game to be completely different than how it is actually being developed.

as if all their complaining will make the devs change the game in to the game they want.

this is still a decent site for information.

  • baphametbaphamet Member RarePosts: 3,311

oh and i am not sure if it is over-rated or not, depends on who you ask. if you are a fan of bioware games or KOTOR and like this style of MMO, then it isn't over-rated.

if you are a fan of sandbox style MMO's, SWG, or just hardcore MMO gaming in general, then it is probably over-rated.

no game is for everyone and for those who don't like this type of game, its inevitably going to "suck" and be an over-rated "pile of crap".

it is as you fear, its not a sandbox game and will be somewhat linear at the very least. for a story driven mmo such as this it would have to be that way you would think.

look how linear bioware games usually are in general, KOTOR was extremely linear and a "spoonfed" game.

yet so many people loved it because of the epic story. at the very least i believe this game will be fun to play for a few months due to all the story content.

i am that guy who will roll every single class to see and "live" their story. i am sure i am not alone either.

sucks for you guys who only want a sandbox hardcore type MMO and hate everything else, i like that style of gameplay as well but i am not limited to it either.

When Star Wars was first released in 1977 my school mates and I watered at the mouth and just kept going - think I hit 23 times before they pulled it from the cinema and I couldn't go any more.

    A sad old day.

Now, 33 years later and gaw, another SW game/cartoon/figure/hell, whatever - Think this is one for the younger folk, think us older lot have had enough of SW now.

So not really bothered with how good or bad it is - just had enough of the IP.

Anakin: "May the force be with you mother!"

Shmi: "What ever Anakin - Oh, and by the way, think you could use some of that: Jedi Powers stuff to close the fridge door please? The milk keeps going off. Thank you!"

I think age may have effected your eyesight,  you need to go read a few comics the graphics are pretty clean and the environment as detailed as any.

This game will appeal to more people than SWG did, can't wat.
