My impression from like 5 hours

Phew time really flew lol.

Ok so I went into the beta ready about what people complain (mouse lag ecc) so they will be mentioned too in a separate section.

Starting game

I login, choose human and see that some of the choices of humans (At least that's what I tried yet) have less hair styles then others but maybe they didn't implement them in time.

(Wished there were more choices specially for scars/accessories but what there is is not that bad.)

One thing for people to note if they haven't try the game yet is that if a name is taken it doesn't care if you have a different surname it seems you WON'T be able to take it so for once try to make a good name pls I already encountered a legolas >_>

I choose a human pugilist and started on the port island (Sorry forgot name) on Wutai server Leolith Sun was the name (A pain to get a working name)

Visually stunning (It's SE after all) and got my first combat which was fairly easy and straight forward don't get what people found difficult to understand by pressing with mouse on monster or tabbing then pressing 1 but anyways...

Cutscene ends and you start INFRONT of an npc guess what guys/gals? yea right talk to him to continue the story.. I seriously can't get how people could miss him specially since he's the galka type (sorry new names are hard to remember :P)

From now on it should be easy to know where to go and what to do if you read or if your the type of person of next next next by opening menu (click on the last icon on the right bottom of your screen) in the list you will have "Journal" there you will find listed all the current quests and even leaves if you ever wonder if you have anything in the log.

By my surprise when you talk to an npc in the bar you can get a linkshell free, give it a name you want and even an icon and when you equip it the icon will show near your name kinda cool.

I'll skip a bit from questing don't want to ruin you the run.

You will be asked to go into the fields outside near an aethyre crystal for a hopefully free leave you will get from the bar npc now you will either want to team or just wander alone for a bit to get the hang of what your doing.

Here you can stay grinding/doing leaves for a bit or go back and continue story quest up to you.

Wanted to try new starting zone

Afterwards I wanted to try starting in a new zone so I logged out I choose a miqo'te lancer same server in the 2nd place (The forest one)

Atm I like more how the story starts here because it's kinda weird but funny and the first town reminds me too much of ffxi desert map which was ugly honestly xD

I'll cut it short here didn't do much with the miqo'te it's 3:30 am here and I'm typing this thing lol..

Skills

Ok now let's skip from the story to some features people might want to know.

When your weapon levels you will maybe have a skill learned which you can equip by opening menu and choosing the 2nd one in the list (forgot name atm) there will be a sort of list and make it your weapon you currently have.

If you have new skills on the left you will notice the bar were you can put skills plus a big number showing 0/X <--- This is the limit on how many skills you can equip at the moment so if x y and z need 3 points each you can't have the 3 of them because you don't have enough space for now.

Now to equip them click on an empty skill slot then press on the skill and equip it main hand (I don't know what it means for the 2nd hand for now maybe you can put skills per hand if you dual wield? dunno)

Most of the new skills will cost you TP apart of stamina to use so they are sort of final attacks but usually are very strong and have effects.

Some issues

Stability:

To my surprise the game run fairly well (Didn't edit anything from the config apart of making it fullscreen and increasing resolution) but the shadows looked kinda weird on the characters but better on land maybe making it high solves it dunno will check tomorrow.

Sometimes it takes a bit to load from one cutscene/zone to another and can be a bit boring.

Minor Spelling mistakes:

Haven't tried last map I can't know much but there's very minor spelling mistakes that if you read what npcs say will be very visible but don't worry it's like 1 words in a trillion so you won't frequently see spelling mistakes this is a very small issue.

Yes I know mouse lag:

To my surprise and from all the whining on the mouse I thought it was going to be some horrible shitty cursor that moves like a drunken hamster but the mouse was moving how to say NOT that bad like people say on this forum (Maybe I had high fps dunno how to know, do I need to open something to check my fps?)

So NO you won't find it game breaking if you have a decent pc because the mouse lags mostly if your lagging and I don't mean latency lag but performance(fps) lag.

Now yes don't expect it to move from an edge to another as fast as your gaming/normal mouse if you have high dpi like mine but it will reach it in a very little less time because it's kinda slower to move but like I said not frustrating.

Yes I know alt + tab:

Like ffxi this game won't probably have support from either steam nor xfire to go on top of the game so I won't be able to chat with my friends when playing unless I play windowed but that's a no no for me.

Enough said.

More customizations needed!

Yes I know there were loads of people around and I didn't see anyone looking like my human BUT with only 8 choices you will oath to see a few later on and that is not acceptable in today's standard in my opinion.

Tera has sort of the same character customization meaning pre-set faces/hair but it's still in beta and they already have more then 16 hairstyles for example.

Icons for vendors:

This is nothing special but I read here there's some shop that sells all starter weapons well I tried searching in town and if you played it you know maps are huge! so it's kinda boring and long to check everything so I tried checking by map but nothing showed me exactly were are vendors.... even ffxi had it on maps hope they'll do something regarding this.

This could be not an issue dunno yet but changing keyboard settings:

I don't like that to open menu I have to press the icon (Prob you can change this from the config didn't check yet) but I don't think it's possible for example to make J instead of camera to open journal or I to open inventory.

This is something I hope they change because it's a bit boring to have to open menu all the time.

Explanation:

Some explanation on what stats increase would be nice too.

Overall

Atm that's all the concerns I have nothing game breaking I'm leaving my pre order were it is cause I'll be in for sure at launch I enjoyed the story quests a lot and time flew.

It's a very good game in my opinion and people should get in with an open mind that you won't be spoonfed but things are explained if you pay attention and don't skip everything without reading.

According to your XFire profile you've got a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250.  Me too!  Hopefully the game will run playably for me as it did for you.

Nice for you... My 5hour.. Do the tuttorial fight, continue quest... get lost... Do tutorial go kill quest... wonder what todo... 30min, back to bar to try to find something... continue quest... Now, need to use every single emote on 7 kid to find their expression for a dance...  asking in /say or /shout get no answer... 2hour later... I get it done.. And gets tuck in a "leaving instance" patterm.... now got to go esquort a kid... but if you leave the circle in the minimap, you "leave the instance" again and need to restart...

Anyhow, combat are painful.. Spam 11112211221112333111... and actually painfully slow  even as apugilist which seemed to be the faster but I guess he fought mob that was too eay for him in the video...

I just cancelled my pre order right after this 5hour run...

Yes graphic are superb, world is alright,,, gameplay is just painfully bad. That's all :P Guess the hardcore fan will like it other won't :P

I know exactly what quest you are talking about with the emotes and it is dreadfully easy sooo........Do not blame that part on the game.

Yep, it's so easy that everyone who was doing the same quest was saying ti was so stupid and retarded... I mean... Wave three time... but it;s lookout, You're terrible, my nana can dance betetr and she's dead, you'd be furious or angry, but you got to cheer him. I wonder how they'd show *joy* but it's surprise and another bunch of crap like this.

Dreadfully easy, maybe since you googled it or been lucky... it wasn't for everyone. Anyhow, that's just one thing in the overall of FFXIV trash bag has.

Only good thing I found was able to switch class and awesome graphic ( even running on a 8800gtx) .. beside that... it suck. If you're a fanboi, I'm happy for you, go play it and enjoy it.

That quest wasn't that bad. all i did was go through the emote list til i hit the right one. took maybe 15 min to complete it. Obviously this game is definatly not for everyone. IT DOES NOT HOLD YOUR HAND THROUGH GAMEPLAY.

But to that I am having a blast in OB I like the having to search and find things to do. Talk to numerous npc's to find the one that starts a quest or to find the weapon vendor. Made you explore the world.

Escorting the kid was the best escort quest in an mmo i have played becasue they didn't walk they ran with you. Omg how many escort quests i have loathed in mmo's because you have to run stop run stop let them catch up. This game i didn't have to stop running they stayed right up with me usually ahaed of me for that matter.

Yes the UI is retarted but it isn't game breaking for me i'm getting quite comfy with it now. I don't use the mouse at all and i'm sorta starting to like it a lot. My comp is in front of the couch in the living room i like i can sit back comfy with just my keybaord and no mouse and enjoy the game.

I guess i jsut didn't notice combat being so slow though a lot of people are complaining about it. So i guess the slow combat just dosen't bother me. Those poison efffects are a real killer though.

Either way you all look at the game i have found the game i am subbing to until SWTOR comes out though bioware should hope i'm not addicted to this game by the time it comes out or that will be one less sub for TOR.

This game has good story too. No VO but the story is pretty great IMO.

Finish that quest storyline, it gives you an awesome amount of gil (around 30k total) to go around buying tools for other classes and etc.

I had mouse lag until I found the exact graphics tweaking for my PC (which solved it), still playing on low fps but I'm used to 15-30 fps ranges (mostly on maximum quality). My PC is a Core 2 Duo E6600 + 3 GB RAM (actually 4, but I'm running on a 32-bit system) + Geforce 9800 GX2 (running on PCI-e 1.0, so it should be harming my performance considerably).

This game along with Starcraft 2 made me found out how horrible my PC refrigeration is though :P

If you're playing with a mouse and keyboard in FFXIV you're doing it wrong... just a FYI.. Get a controller..  If you insist on using a keyboard you shouldn't even be touching the mouse.

SE designs their control schemes around a controller.  If you get a controller it will be like playing any other FF game with a controller and it is a much more fun exp.

I have a basic PC.. Core 2 Duo Esomething 2.6GH 3GB Ram GTX 260 and it runs just fine and looks GREAT at 1920x1080 on my 42" HDTV over HDMI.  Picked up a wireless keyboard and rocked it from the recliner.  Was a great time.

Now my thoughts: I played FFXI from JP-Beta > A few days ago when I logged in to test FFXIV.  I'm familiar with how SE does business(not always the best way, but at least they stay true to their style of making games.)  If you're a FF fan and you liked FFXI you'll like FFXIV.  If your only MMO is WoW and you expect jumping and stuff this isn't gonna please you.

I predict that it will be about as popular as FFXI... but I could be wrong.  I think in the end a steady 500k-1m subs will be what plays the game.  It won't have the appeal of WoW so if you expect WoW like sub numbers and that matters to you then well dunno.  If you expect to have your hand held I'd say don't count on it.  While they are surely making it easier then FFXI was at the start, there still isn't any yellow question marks.  They expect you to explore and talk to NPC's to find quests.  Something I'm glad they kept.  Not many MMO's go that route anymore.  They rail road you from one road to the next.  It seems like in FFXIV they have gone the, "you can do it if you want, but you don't have to" route just like in FFXI.  Creating a sandbox PvE game.  It is great in that aspect.

over all so far i'm really not finding it that much different then FFXI other then no auto-attack and what not.  It plays even with the changes to the game, much the same.  Which is actually surprising because I didn't really expect to like the game when I was watching videos.  But actually playing it, its something else.

Regardless if SE says they are Westernizing the game or not... They will forever and always design their games with the Japanese market in mind first and foremost.   I will be playing FFXIV from here on out.  If that tells you anything.  After 8 years of FFXI i'm ready to start new again and I can see this game being A LOT of fun for those of us that like this style of MMO.

If you take your time and play and have fun(find a good group) FFXI is group oriented and FFXIV with the abyssea style combat things make people WANT to group up.  Guildleves and stuff are really cool!

i agree with most you said except saying if your using a keyboard your doing it wrong. I played ffxi for a long time also i never used a controller for that either just the keyboard no mouse. I love the way the game plays just using a keyboard. And I would not be able to stand using a controler than having to put it down and pick up my keybaord to type. So I just use the keyboard. WASD to move IJKL to move camera number keys to attack and the - key plus arrow keys for menu very easy to use like this but if your not familiar with it just a little practice and it becomes second nature.

Though ffxi did have more cusomization in mapping keys not sure why FFXIV doesn't allow you to change your key mappings on your keyboard like in ffxi. Maybe you will be able to in release who knows but either way not a gamebreaker for me. I'm loving it so far.

Unlikely. SE never has and never will give a shit about the PC client and in all likelyhood will let it sit there and languish in its insufferable state and threaten to ban any third party mods that attempt to fix their inability to actually make a proper UI. They designed it for a controller and tacked on everything else. Honestly, I would say don't even bother with the game unless you are planning on playing on the PS3, or using nothing but voice chat and a controller on the PC. There is no reason to not have a proper PC interface, and putting down a controller to type is the most unintuative thing I've ever heard of.

LOL I am not sure how reading and going to your emote list is difficult in anyway? Like that is not even a matter of getting your hand held or not. It is being literate and using something that is in plain view on your UI.

  • grapevinegrapevine Member UncommonPosts: 1,927

The quest would be fine if the UI wasn't so bad.  That's the problem with FF XIV, everything is half thought out, then implemented in either a boring and/or over complex way.

Its certainly going to be niche, and likely so see less numbers than FF XI.  Especially when people just give up and go back to XI.

FF XIV is the worst MMO I've played, and I've played most.  There's even F2P MMOs way better.  SE have really let people down.  I was really looking forward to it, now I'm just annoyed with them for dropping the ball so much.

.... It's just total non sense? Totally useless? Worst quest ever imaginated ever in a game? ( Well I'm sure there's worst but still..)

Btw, I never said it was "hard".. It was just painfully boring. Man, after 5hour I was still in the same quest... The jounal doesn't give good intruction. Oh boy, I wasted like 30min because how they wrote on the map is non readable. White Wolf Gate, where the heckw as it? No point to anywhere, shouting no one knew... awesome shit :D But still, if you like this kind of crap and trash, go ahead and play it.

I for sure not going because it suck. If SE ever create a good game for PC, don't worry Ill jump on it, FFXi was ok to some extend, FFXIV so far is crap.

You said 2 hours later you finished the emote quest in your first post on this thread. That is just awful. And it is not a very hard concept to realize that when you are in an instanced quest to not run out of the designated zone that is clearly marked on your map.

Sound like a bad player to me.

I am not defending FF14 at all either. I am more than likely passing on it myself because they cannot make the proper mouse and UI changes.

  • grapevinegrapevine Member UncommonPosts: 1,927

Sure, blame the player.  How about the truth, that its just bad.

The first time in FF XIV is highly confusing, as it gives the player no help at all.  I've seen many give up in close beta, just because of that.

Thank you OP, that was a very well done first interpretation of the game.  I am still hoping to get into OB, and nothing posted so far has discouraged me.  I liked FF XI I just came in to late in the game.  This time I have no intention of making that mistake, I want to be right in the story from the opening day.  Hopefully I will find a good LS so I can really experience this as it was made to be experienced with friends.  I think the one thing this game will replicated is the focus on Multiplayer.  FF XI seemed to be very group driven, which for a massively multiplayer game i think is generally the focus.  Im not gonna say you shouldnt be able to solo, but I think there should be advantages to grouping over soloing.  Thanks again for a view into the game.

Completely with you on that one...!

Having done the emote quest myself, it just wasn't that big of a deal, but it was that quest in particular combined with the horrid UI and controls that made me realize that I was highly unlikely to invest much of myself into this game.  The quest by itself was just merely lame, but combined with fighting the UI the whole time to complete it...  meh...  it became an exercise in pure frustration.  Target the NPC, scroll through a list of emotes, pick the wrong one, target the NPC again, rinse and repeat until you get a positive result from a completely unrelated emote.  Not my idea of a good time.

If you liked FFXI then you will love this game for sure.  It's quite beautiful, especially if you have a decent PC.  Keep trying to get an OB key, because I got mine right when I was about to give up.  I highly recommend looking for an alternate source to download the beta while you keep trying for a key, though, because the standard SE updater is godawful.

This is the same company that routinely places things in their games like "Oh you touched that chest at the very beginning of the game, you just broke the stupidly intricate series of events that must transpire to get the best weapon, events you would never know about were it not for the trial and error of thousands of OCD minions and Gamefaqs" I'm surprised there are no quests  that involve running around the quarters of the city, in a specific order, and entering in and out of the weaponsmiths door six times, three during the day and three at night, to cause the quest NPC to appear...

It is too late now, but they had in italics the verb of the emotion you were meant to do, I didn't miss any because I noticed that.

Agreed on the "fighting against UI" part, though I am pretty sure I'll get used to it.

I'm still trying to give it a chance but I highly doubt that I will get used to it, nor should I be required to, when it would have been so easy for them to incorporate the standard controls of the medium they chose to release this game on, rather than having PC gamers basically pay to beta test a PS3 game for a year.

The lack of PC UI functionality is a clear game breaker here, and that is very sad, because this game is really quite good in other respects.

This is precisely why I'm likely giving this game a pass. I was interested at first when it was shown/announced, but I knew all too well how they treated the PC client with the last one, and honestly have no respect for SE in that regard. The PC client is an afterthought and will consistantly suffer in favor of the PS3 one. They should have just released it as PS3 only and be done with it.
