....or?
It's the same old as with any mmo shortly before launch. A lot of negativism if it isn't what people expected, etc etc.
Although, I have to say, from what I have been reading, there was more negativism than positivism so far. Even fanboys are a bit reluctant with their "usual defense" of the game.
So it's just to wait until launch, see what happens after a 3-4 weeks, and then decide if one wants to check it out or not (at least for me). The last thing I want to be part of is to be with peeps ingame who are after their free months "so long and thanks for the fish" and one is one a half-dead server suddenly. Seen that happen way too often in the past [even if I do wish for the fans and the devs that this won't happen]

PS3-Launch that is, yeah.
I am a die hard keyboard and mouse gamer -- I have never been much of a console player. This game though has me really considering buying a xbox360 controller because the mouse and keyboard controls really get in the way of the game play in my opinion.
I keep finding myself wishing I didn't have to click on so much crap with the poorly handled mouse.
Wait for PS3 Launch. If you're Keyboard & Mouse person, avoid this game like plague - it's made for controllers and it shows.
People who like the game are playing more than posting here. We only come here occassionally to get a laugh out of the people who are having a hard time with the game. It's really fun to see people posting here about being unhappy because the game doesn't function like other MMOs when they are apparently too bored with those MMOs to be playing them.
By all means, people should wait 3-4 weeks after launch to try the game if that makes them happy. At last report there were 150,000 preorders so the rest of us won't be lonely at launch.
No, I will not be waiting until launch. I will not be waiting until the PS3 release.... the fundamentals of this game are not enjoyable to many of us, and those will not change.
Which is fine, if you enjoy stuff like that, but what concerns me is that people think that the mouse / keyboard / glitch / bugs / etc.. etc.. is what people are disappointed at.
.... its not.
No it's not made just for controllers. People spout this same thing everytime they hear a game is made for both PC and consoles. It's made for both keyboards and controllers but you need to be willing to learn something new. Which apparently many American MMO gamers just can't handle. Download the keyboard schematics and you'll probably find that many things you are using your mouse for can be done with the keyboard.
It might not be the main concern of some people but I don't even feel like I can fairly judge the game since the controls are so awful.
I'd say the verdict is more like:
Do you like hard, well-balanced, technically demanding games, where some of that hardness can be found in dealing with learning a radically different interface than you're used to? Then Final Fantasy XIV should be a good investment for you.
Do you expect the game to adapt to you, entertain you with zero muss or fuss, to not expect you to jump through any hoops, even if that means comprimising a bit of difficulty and the integrity of the overall game world? Stick to WoW.
People who think the game will radically change to accomidate them by the time the PS3 version is out are fooling themselves. They're not going to give the GUI a major overhaul, not in 9 months, not in 9 years, we've Final Fantasy XI having that same console-friendly interface for nearly a decade to prove it. This looks to be no XML interface to me, but rather a hard coded one; the interface isn't wrought of basla wood, but rather carved out of diamond. Change will not come easily to such a medium.
There isn't one side and then the other, it's not so clearly half & half. There are very different subties, many of which people don't even take into account. One this is - real life MMO-Fatigue. Honestly, I was hoping for something that looked and handled a lot like FFXI but was a little easier to get into and enjoy with solo stuff. I played and enjoyed several solo things in FFXI, like the Campaign for instance - these things were great. I wanted FFXIV to expand upon these things, but it didn't. Just because I don't like, doesn't mean I expected the game to adapt to me.
I just find that I can go out in the woods in real life, cut down a tree, carve a stick.. go into my metal shop and forge a blade faster and easier than I can in Final Fantasy XIV. If I can do it faster, easier, and get a better sense of reward from doing it in reality - why the fuck do I want to bust my ass making something that's not even real in the first place? It's a game, why do they have to treat it like a complete virtual reality?
Not expecting a smooth launch but i guess we shall see.
