Horribly Terri-BAD game.

LOL, I don't even bother playing after like hitting level 12, but I can't believe SquareEnix is going through with this crappy OBT and call this Alpha test looking like client service ready.

I mean, I have i7 940 with 8 gigs of ddr3 rams and gtx260 core 216s in SLI, but the rig's fans run like crazy when I run FFXIV.  This is really sad and unfortunate fact that SquareEnix simply doesn't know how to optimize their own game on PC setting, let alone what it will be like on the PS3.

I have ran Crysis and bunch of other games in max settings, and yet to see my comp heat up the way it does playing FFXIV.  Damn client feels like an Alpha client than service ready in just few weeks.

Another sad problem is that the client is straight up shit.  Not only me, but other people are having problems patching their clients ALL THE GODDAMNED TIME.  If SquareEnix can't even design a workable client by OBT, how the hell do you go into service claiming the game is ready.  It isn't ready, and the game client is a piece of turd.  I need to restart my computer for it every goddamn time it times out during patching process.

Oh yea, the game impressions?  I liked it, it was unique, and there were tons of things to do.  Until I realized what a massive grind the damn game is...

Jesus christ for god's sake, can they at least add some kind of tutorial so first timers aren't turned off by SquareEnix's complete lack of consideration for noobies?!?  First time I logged into this game, I ran around doing absolutely nothing for 2 hours.  I really don't get how SquareEnix was boasting themselves in the beginning that they will challenge WoW with this piece of turd.  At least in WoW, you can hack some goddamned mobs while not knowing how to progress in the game.  In FFXIV, they have like one rat or a beetle every 1000 character distances away on the damn field.  Not to mention, you hit some Dodo bird and die in 2 hits, Woohoo~.

I'm sorry, but if anyone actually thinks this game is going to compete against any of the top MMOs in the market, you must be shittin yourself, because it's not going to happen in the current state.

The game is missing the very basis of friendly and clear concepts to succeding.

Honestly, I don't think they will fix a lot of the  things that are bothering some people, but that doesn't mean it won't be a good game, and that they won't be able to fix/optimize things quickly, like they already have been in beta.  I've beta tested or been at the launch of most major mmorpgs out there, and I've never seen one come out clean and polished.  WoW?  Nope, game was very buggy at launch.  Ultima?  Hell no.  Everquest (1 and 2)?  Not even close.  AOC?  No, and it was missing key advertised features for several months.  Vanguard?  Broken at launch.  LOTRO?  I guess this was in an ok state, for an easy-mode , wow-lite game.  Aion?  Was ok, but they really were launched in Asia for several months before US launch, and the game was/is pretty shallow.

I hate to bring comparisons to other games in, but it's a little misguiding to uninformed readers, who read: "OMG I can't play on highest settings, and the UI isn't like WoW so it sucks" posts.  The game certainly has some things that need to be ironed out, but it is in a very playable state.  The biggest thing they need to do is optimize the mouse (you don't really even have to use it) and the smoothness of the UI/menu system some more (of course, you need to throw the planned release content in there).  They already have optimized/fixed a lot, just in the past week or so.  Even if it isn't perfect by launch, the base of this game has a lot to offer:  Uncomparable visuals, a  story line that looks like it will be unmatched in the MMO arena (limited in beta, but the beginning quest line is already better than any quest line I've seen in an MMO), a unique and challenging crafting/gathering system,  a unique and innovative class system, and that's not including a lot of the features they are planning after launch.

I'm not saying the game doen's have flaws, because it most certainly does.  There is some work to do.  There are even a few things that disappointed me a bit as an FFXI fan, but its not in the "terrible broken" state that some posters on this site may have you believe.  Work in progress? Yes, just like every other MMORPG worth a damn.

Actually, your OP offered nothing really new to the discussions going on in dozens of other threads in the past week and its late (early?) on a Sunday so responses will probably be a bit low. (suffering from insomnia myself this evening)

It has problems, no doubt, but it will probably appeal to a certain niche, it will run acceptable for a majority of folks, and more content will be forthcoming.

It will always have more grind and fewer quests than most traditional games out there today.

Sonic? He's getting ready to drag me off to outter space to stop Eggman from enslaving a peaceful Alien Race. Honestly, he's just dragging me around to pilot the ship. I don't even get to help! He's such a show-off. Doesn't make sense, you know. I'm higher on the food chain than he is! *mumbles*

I mean... It's an Amusement Park.. It's a deadly amusement park fueled by an Alien Race that can gift you with near god-like power and armed to the teeth by deadly robots built by a crazy mad egg shaped man, but still!

As for Knuckles? Well, he just sits on his buttox and shoos people away from his precious Emerald. Meh.. What Rouge sees in him.. Or is that the twinkle of the Master Emerald in her eye? When I ask her it's always "You're too young".. Feels like I've been 8 years old for 18 years now. Jeez!

Congratulations!  You don't like a video game.  Thank you for taking time out of your undoubtedly busy schedule to share your angst about how the game isn't working on your expensive PC, and how the game isn't instantly gratifying.  That was a well-thought, open-minded review.

Probably because all the message seems to say is:

    • The game slowly and unstably even on my awesome, awesome computer.

    • The game has some interesting qualities, but is hard and grindy.

Reflecting on the last 200 threads we read where we debated these points into the ground, there wasn't a whole lot left to say about it.  At this point, the greater majority of the players probably fall into one of these categories:

    1. I played the open beta and learned it's not for me.

    2. I played the open beta and plan to go ahead and buy it, even if it's not perfect.

    3. I can't be buggered to have tried the open beta, but that's alright, I've already decided whether I'm going to buy the game anyway.

So when you come along and say, "hay guys, I think this game is bad, so bad it's terrible, in fact lets merge those together: it's terri-bad, right? I invented a word for just how bad it is" you're going to be interpretted in one of the following manners respectively:

    1. Yeah, I know, glad I'm not buying it.

    2. Yeah, I heard it all before, but I still like the game enough to buy it.

    3. I AM COVERING MY EARS, I CAN'T HEAR YOU, I'M NOT LISTENING, LALALALA.

So that's about all you're gunna get right now.

This is why Tails should've been in Smash Bros. Brawl and not Sonic. This. This right here.

I was fully prepared! I modified the Tornado's Armored Mech Mode and everything... But leave it to Sonic, yes? "I'll handle this, little buddy!" It's ok, Sonic. Next time we visit the beach, I won't rescue you from the water when Knuckles throws you in it. Honestly, you'd think after all this time at least one of you would learn to swim!

I try not to draw too much attention to folks who identify that heavily with Sonic the Hedgehog characters, as Internet experiences tell me it's overly likely their hard drives are full of explicit furry materials that would made a hard-boiled veteran homicide detective flinch in revulsion to uncover.

Not really intended to be an insult nor a personal attack, just I've been around the block enough times to have encountered a lot of furries whose attraction to the characters are well beyond the typical comfort level of mixed company.   It should be noted you're not specifically being drawn out because I've only indicated a high likelihood of such an instance of an individual, not condemned you as definately being one of them.

Honestly I'm a little curious about why one is getting crappy performance, because I've been playing the game on a comp with an Intel Pentium dual cpu E2200, 3 gb ram, and an HD Radeon 4870. I'd assume that this means I've been playing on a worse computer, but running on the highest settings at 2560x1600 I've yet to catch any hitches in the game from my hardware.

I don't mean to be rude when I ask, but I'm curious just what the hell you're doing with a computer like that to make it wheeze while playing this game.

For all I know maybe the game just isn't optimized for Nvidia and what not, but you have had the exact opposite performance experience I've had. :p

If I could play the game in Full Screen mode without getting a black screen, I'd be more than happy to play it more. Unfortunately, I can't seem to fix the issue. Even reinstalling drivers and updating DirectX didn't fix the problem. Ah well. I'll wait until the kinks are ironed out before I play it.

Truth be told, for a fellow who often refutes the more baseless accusations against the game, I'm deeply worried about Final Fantasy XIV.  (Queue somebody coming in to tell me to go outside more... hey, I'm a gamer4life, these things are big on my radar , alright?)

Open beta was a very bad showing in some ways.  Yes, the world is pretty, but the GUI is too laggy, the item exchange of the player-driven economy is a mess, and now it seems the game may have ruined much of its potential trying to be casual friendly as well.

I think to myself, "maybe I aught to just take my $50 and sink it in Lord of the Rings Online now that it's gone free to play?"  I think that's a great idea for anyone who is looking for an MMORPG and FFXIV doesn't live up to their expectations, because LOTRO is actually a very solid PC MMORPG.  That $50 would probably be enough for the Mines of Moria expansion and my remaining two bag slots, that's pretty much unlimited play, for free: what a bargain!

However, there's one thing FFXIV has that LOTRO doesn't: A fresh start.  Lets face it, MMORPGs get played out after awhile.  There comes to be a massive amount of players sitting around at maximum level, and when that's the case I have to wonder why I should bother leveling up at all?  Everything that was once new is now old, and the other players have massive veterancy over me, I'm like an American colonial going west long after all the homesteads have already been handed out: the rush is over, just boring country life for you.  (Plus, another advantage FFXIV has that LOTRO doesn't: I've discovered a way to get some exercise out of it.)

So, I don't know.  Part of this sinus headache I've had lately is probably specifically from the cognitive dissonance related specifically to this decision that needs to be made next week.  What it's really going to take to swing my vote on FFXIV is probably this: faith in Square-Enix.  Do I still have it?  Should I still have it based off of what I've seen of the open beta client and that they're apparently determined to put it (with 90% more content)  to market?  Perhaps if I heard something official that indicated that they had massively improved release client hiding in the wings for release... but it seems such news was lost in translation if it exists at all.

I have been curious too watching all the posts like this one. My system is liek the OPs but older on pretty much everythign and I dont have any of the problems these people are saying they are having. I'm even running on Vista 64 still and not a single issue. I'm almost betting a mojority of the trouble these people are having is net issues and configuration issues. Most of the people who post thier spec's and they are all overclocked and pumped up on roids seem to be going through hell. I just dont get it, mine is a factory rig with added RAM and an older NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 I yanked out of my previous machine. What I do have is a nice ADSL connection (its good sometimes to be a telecom engineer and know how to talk to your tech rep).

But anyway yeah, most the complaints I see on these forums really dont point to game server issues, they point to net infastructure issues and user setup, but good luck convincing anyone here of that. Most see BETA and NEW GAME and automaticlaly assume it HAS to be on the game server end for everything. Happens on every game, and then they bitch and wonder why the developers can't fix thier problems, well thats because they aren't on thier end always. I bet this games UI runs smooth and fast as hell on SEs end and they are shrugging like crazy trying to find what everyone is complaining about. Its like troubleshooting a shadow.

~Miles "Tails" Prower out! Catch me if you can!

EDIT: Oh.. That sign? Well, yes.. umm.. you see, Rouge put that there as a joke! It's all her fault! She's always picking on me!
