I think the only real issue I would have with this has to do with the apparent intended audience. Sexy is one thing. Having a female character model constantly bending over showing her ass and panties is another.

So the question is, do I want to play an MMO with a bunch of horny teenagers/adults?

Nah, not really. Regular old nerds will do just fine.

Oh I will. It's kinda funny though blaming GW2 for being "cartoonish" while at the same time looking forward to playing with  panda-bears and little school girls in candy-land. And if you are overstrained with mouse/keyboard (which obviously is the case) i'd recommend "Monster Hunter", a game that has all the "innovations" since the 90's that Tera seems to claim for itself.

I was merely talking about the rainbow pallet that gw2 uses not the art direction. And I'm not overstrained with mouse/keyboard that's exactly the reason that I will be playing this game and not another click-spam-next game. Tera claims to be the first true action MMO...and it is.

Slutty is the last thing you'll have to worry about when you are getting slaughtered by one. They are demonic and most demonic females I've seen, be it movie or game, were always "naughty". And not everyone who likes the game is horny, in fact, you are for thiking dirty.

How dare you call me horny?!!!

Yeah, I didn't say everyone was going be horny that played the game. I said that it appears to be their intended audience. From that, I deduce that there will be a high ratio of horny teenagers/adults that play this. And my deduction could end up being completely false.

It's quite an ignorant assumption to make, basing what you believe to be their intended audience on such a small, inisgnificant feature of the game...

Tera, done by the people that did Lineage 2. I'm not surprised really. Besides using sexiness to sell a product is the norm in the western world and has been for a good while.  Really though, I think it's pretty mild conpared to some other games.

Then again I do play H games, so maybe it just doesn't affect me.

Their intented audience being horny people is what other people make up...and you. This is a very insignifact feature, it only looks imporant because it has been discussed to death on these forums. Their true intented audience is people who like a more active type combat and less RNG (will it be successful, who knows) but, hell, I want to play with these people.

Well, the game does obviously have some die-hard supporters. I certainly think that if those supporters do not see the issue with this, they are turning a blind eye to something obvious.

Some people will find this offensive. And an argument can be made that says that it will attract a certain type of audience (in addition to the people that like action based MMORPGs) based on the developer's decision to sexualize the game.

It's not an ignorant point of view. In fact, to not see these as possibilities is ignorant.

You started off sorta okay and went downhill from there. Save your discussions on being 'accepted by society' for when you come out of the closet, want a sex change, want to have a child without a parent (meaning, adopting when you're single), want to be a muslim, etc. I'm not saying you want to be any of those things, but my point is that those groups of people are the ones who justifiably deserve to speak on acceptance in society.

    You're just a gamer ; It's not that important.

By the way, WoW is the best example why 'mainstream acceptance' of gaming is not necessarily a good thing. I won't go into that one any further.

Anyway, if something as shallow as what characters look like bothers you, you need to toughen up. This is a fantasy world. If you look around, you'll see men have become just as much objects of sex and nudity as women, sometimes more. Have you seen the Orc on the splash screen for Shaiya? Have you seen the tarzan look of the GW2 Norn men? If something is too gratuitous for you, walk away. But learn to pick your battles. Naked pixels just aren't something worth a soap box. Sorry.

If people want porn, they'll get porn.  No one is gonna pay money for this game just to look at some panties.  Get over it.

I'm not sure what you think I need to get over. I'm not saying it's bad. I'm not saying I have something against it. I think there is a reading comprehension issue here.

I'm saying that this game is targeted towards an audience that finds that kind of sexualized artwork acceptable and normal and that I think that I will not have very much in common with that crowd.

And I also think that there are a lot of people that might also think that way based on what I've seen in this video.

Ever since graphics got decent, MMOs( and to an extent most all games with females in them) generally have a sexually appealing race in it or in general has sexually appealing characters..  WoW, Warhammer, CoH/V, APB, Lineage 2, Blade&Soul, Aion, Dungeons and Dragons, Aion, Vendictus, Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2, Vindictus, Second Life, etc.

I think your just going to have to get use it it, just like you got use to people acting like hoes and sexing it up on cable TV.

    Yeah, you might be right.

But I see this as different than any of the games you listed. My grandfather might view, say, a WoW blood elf, like I am viewing this ass and panties shot. Perhaps I am just a repressed individual. But I really do see this as taking an extra step towards sexualization.

I mean, what's the next step? There really aren't too many steps left without entering the pornography area. Perhaps it can be viewed as walking that line nicely.

And to address your last point, fortunately for me, I don't have to put up with it. And anyone else that feels like it's silly and will attract the wrong sort of crowd doesn't have to either. They just won't play the game. I kind of like a certain amount of sexual innocence in my MMORPG gaming.

The Dark Elf is hot.  I've heard a bunch about L2.  It just made it onto my must play list.

Thankfully, it will attract the other crowd, the one hyped up for active combat not the one that people are making up to be. Noone is gonna pay 15$/month to be able to see some panties and thankfully again, those people will be playing Second Life or the likes of it. The only people that are gonna be playing this are the competitive ones and if one decides to play it, he will only have to put up against them.

I don't find it disgusting at all. I actually like this.

I seriously do not get how people can get offended by this. Its just a video game, and video games are supposed to be fun. Why mind at all at how they designed the art in this game?

This pretty much shows that a LOT of people seem to have time on their hands, to head onto a forum and complain about how this is sexist for females and the like.

Would people rather their female, DEMON characters look and behave like the broodmother?

The difference between "not liking" and "finding offensive" is very big.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oogeJzEZIn0  Here is how human females look in game, still not the best, but much better than the castanica female.
Secondly, I'm not saying female gamers don't have a sexual life, but if a woman lurks gaming forums and goes on to say such troll comments as: "If you like how this game looks then you are nothing but a boy that has never been laid in his life" and "they made this decision to attract horny adolescent boys that have never seen lady parts in real life" then it really makes me wonder.

Sorry, I did not think you were Paterach. If you ready again, you will see I address him specifically after I flippantly noted your mindset is part of the problem. It was he with whom I had a serious problem.

But since you responded politely, so shall I in turn.

First, and most importantly with relation to your post, is that it makes no difference in the character in question was a human, a demon, and elf, or any other imaginary thing. What matters is how the subject matter was treated. That they portray Castani in this way speaks to how they view human women, obviously. It shows them treating females as sex objects, which is offensive. It has no bearing on my security with my own body. I am comfortable in my own skin, and the female characters in these games only look marginally better than I do, and that usually in their perfect faces.

The point is how women are treated in media, and how this affects and is representative of their perceptions of women on a subconsious level. This is part of a worldwide phenomenon in which women are systemically viewed as less important than men and as sex objects for those men. Someone mentioned how there are bigger problems in the world, and that's obvious, but that women are still treated so badly in parts of the world, and that it is not more denounced by people, is directly related to the same mentality that thinks it is okay to portray females in this way.

Let me be clear. I have no problems with depictions of sex, or sexual concepts. I think that America (at least when I was there) is much more conservative about this issue that many places, and they should lighten up with regards to sex scenes and the like. I love violent games, and I love killing the imaginary things or the avatars of people in these games, and that is fine, I think. When two soldiers meet in battle, or someone hunts monsters, that is fun. What would not be acceptable for violence would be the slaughter of civilians, or torture for fun, and things like that. It is okay to show sex, and talk about sex, but to objectify women in the way that is done here (it is especially obvious if you listen to the men talking about the character in the video, that is as repusive or more than the actual avatar) is not okay, and to allow it, or think it is okay, is the problem. This is sexist, and works in the same way as someone mentioned racism. Everyone I know would be offended if a black person was stereotyped in a game. How is it that that treatment is okay for women?

What is worst of all this is that so many people do not even seem to understand the issue, or why someone else might be offended, even if they are not. They have been raised with the mindset that it is okay to treat women that way, so they see no issue with it. I guess once indoctrination happens, there is no helping some people.

I will continue to read this thread, but I think I am done talking in it. If someone does not understand how this can be offensive without being caused by insecurity or lack of a sex life or whathaveyou, then I doubt there is any explaining it, and they will just continue to be part of the problem. We will just have to work on the next generation, to make things a little better for everyone.
