For those of you who have not read this, this article tells you how you might get a chance at the beta or if you are already eligible: http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=23684
Basically, if you made an account before 10/1/10, good job, you're in.
I'm fairly excited for this game and want to help out with the beta testing

it means you "have a chance" at getting into beta
this
If you make one today, then you have a chance
^ This.
You have a better chance to get into one of the beta 'events' which will likely be like a weekend type deal. After that your name will be tossed back into the pool to possibly be chosen again. You will also still have a chance to get accepted into the main beta test (or what they are calling the continued Alpha)

It's pretty much all explained here.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
The community keys were given to people who signed up for the forums before Oct 2nd.
Signing up for the community will still get you a chance at beta, just not a community key (which is what gives you slightly better odds).

It's kind of disappointing how it's basically a lottery. You're getting lucky so you can test out a game.
I can kinda see where they're going with this but it's just so hard to wait for it
Well pretty much all beta's are a lottery. The key thing was just a way of saying 'thank you' to the people who have shown interest in the game.
Waiting for a new game will always be hard, just need to find a way to distract yourself.

The beta groups arnt actually there for testing purposes, past stress loading etc. They are really just publicity events.
It has been stated that 'alpha' could run up to when the game goes gold, alongside the extra layer of 'beta'.
Trion's phrasing has been more then a bit odd with regards to their testing... The usual understanding of what is alpha and beta dosent really apply here. You are best thinking of 'alpha' and 'beta' not as chronological phases, but designations for different groups that have different roles, but will be active at the same time.
While all this is fine, it does create confusion as to what stage the game is in (many have given it props for looking so good while 'only being in alpha' for instance) and what they should expect to be their duties to be if they should get in.
The bottom line is though that Trion have a couple of hundred alphas in there already to do the real job of testing, and will only be adding to these via established guild invites, handpicked chosens, media site reps, and competition winners. The 'betas' are basically just tourists.
Nothing wrong with all this ofc, but it would have helped if Trion had communicated their definitions and plans more clearly maybe. Their community interaction is generally excellent though so it should be easy to forgive them at this stage and put their blurry messaging on this down to a blip.
On the upside, it looks like the one shot weekends (and then your out of the pool) are being reviewed with the aim of keeping people in the pool for future selections, maybe meaning betas get maybe a few goes if they are lucky.
Indeed
Civ 5 is doing that just fine for me right now.
For those reading this thread, if you never have read anything I have written or Vesavius, you best ingest what I have highlighted of Vesavius' post here. If you want the truth about Trion's testing methodology, it's staring you in the face right here. Read it, and read it again.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."

I would like to add that beta is not just to let players into the game as a tourist attraction. For that we would have an open beta, which would be far more easy to organize than these multiple events. I seriously believe that they intend to do focus testing during those beta events and those who participate in them are expected to give feedback of some kind.
It takes one to know one.
Buy the comic book and you can also get a Beta key lol.
