World graphics

I recently started playing Aion. I'm enjoying the game so far. It's smooth, polished and has that WoWesque responsiveness in combat that so many mmos fail to deliver.

The only part I'm really unimpressed with are the world graphics. I have the game running at full settings and the landscapes look garbage. It's particularly noticable coming from a game like LOTRO where the world looks detailed. What makes it more frustrating is that the character models and all other doodads are simply stunning. The graphics in all other areas are first class which makes the backdrops look, for lack of a better word, lazy. Frustrates me no end.

I'm not sure if it's merely the zone I'm starting in. I've only up to the first forest as a level 7 Asmodae. Do the world graphics get better as the game progresses?

One thing I remembered about Aion was the flat world textures, juxtaposed witht the rediculously good-looking character models.

I recently came back to aion after having played AoC for some tim (i did not dump AoC btw still luv it :) And i was less impressed then i was before when i was wowed by aions gfx.But saying that LOTRO looks better more detailled ,not really.LOTROs design is boring to ne end and graphical quality is just bad for a MMO that started out with a montlhy sub model,Its is so bland in its GFX and gameplay imo it should have been fp2 from the start imo.

Sure they have DX10 water and a DX10 shader but the game doesnt realy use DX10 beyond just shader 4.0 (AoC beats the living daylights out of LOTRO even when LOTRO is running in DX11 mode since they simply do not use it really. All they did was switch on DX11 really :)

aion in desing and models looks way better but it has this clean look in the envirment to wich i agree but thats the asian style you see mostly.I do agree the game is up for a texture overhaul even tho it still looks really good.

LOTRO environment graphic + Fallen Earth atmospheric effects + Aions character models = heaven

You are dead on.  I made it to 50 and full Fenris before 2.0 and there's always a disconnect between the character model and the environment.  I don't know what it is, but the player characters seem to be alive while the world is flat and dead despite the wandering NPCs.

Actually, I quite enjoy the looks of the aion world... although I played AoC and LotRO as well.

I don't get what your problem is. Even the characters do not look "disconnected" from the environment to me.

Doesn't LOTRO use DX11? or DX10? Aion still uses DX9, but have always been impressed by the smoothness of the client ( except in mass pvp). I got all graphics set on highest and max AA and the game looks beautiful.
