I was wondering how this game got the hype level it has. Seems that I have found my answer.

just in case it is taken down, I've opted to add screenshots. Is this common practice for hyping games on mmorpg?

copy/paste above links, they are far to large for practical forum use.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We are currently reviewing this information.
Hello,
I would like to apologize to the mmorpg.com community managers for this mix up. While I had posted a thread asking for Perpetuum players to help me to get the hype up on the game, I would like to point out that I never once told anyone how to vote.
Once again I would like to apologize to the mmorpg.com community managers, users and the Perpetuum dev team for my mistake.
Thanks
GM Gremrod
Unfortunate. Now I can't help but think that the Dev's just feel the public is no more then cattle, and will buy the game just cause other people are.
Not interested. Hype of 0
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
This is not the case at all. The DEV team has nothing to do with this and I am not a DEV. I am a GM and that is it. I do not work for the creators of the game. I am a volunteer GM.
Hey don't worry about me, I'm just one person that doesn't like the stench of Blackomen. The rest of the cattle can make up their own mind.

Plese don't turn this into a personal flame thread, it will serve the community better by not being locked and buried.
thanks.
The game should speak for itself, rather than a GM asking to artificially inflate some imaginary numbers so that the game appears better than it is.
It would only be fair to say that towards the GM if we knew what post he removed. He isn't responsible for the forum users actions, however as a person in a position of responsibility he could have notified the saff here of what was going on.
Well it's not like he is going to ask the forum goers there to vote negatively on the game. Of course he was trying to get some hype for the game, its like leading starving people to a table full of food and saying "i am not telling you to eat it....."
I'm not sure about you guys, but I'm not going to blame someone for a sound business practice. 'Big MMO site that has a rating system for games? Heck yeah I want to be popular on there! Guys if you like the game please rate us!' Nothing really dirty or wrong with it. Asking people to like your game. A digital number might get them sales, but its you the consumer who makes or breaks the game. Feel anyway you like about this but its really no different from if a band or radio station wants to be followed on twitter or facebook and askes for the same, only in the form of advertisements.
Disgusting. Volunteer GM or no, you are one of the bigger faces of the game simply because of your GM status. That puts you in a position where things like this aren't acceptable.
I mean, I'd understand if a player suggested it to the community, but for a GM to do so?
Personally I'd dump it down to 6 for that.
MMO's played: Ragnarok Online (For years), WoW (for a few weeks only), Guild Wars, Lineage 2, Eve, Allods, Shattered Galaxy, 9 Dragons, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Star Trek Online (Got someone ELSE to pay for it), Champions Online (Someone else paid), Dofus, Dragonica, LOTRO, DDO and more... A LOT more. I've played good AND bad. The bad didn't last long. :P
I strongly urge the people reading this thread to actually click the link provided and read the posts, REALLY read it and see what went on.
/edit link added.

Turbine actually did something very similar for the Escapist developer awards contest in 2008 or so. They even pasted info of the contest on their LOTRO Launcher spash page, and provided links for how to register for Escapist and where to vote. It got alot of flack from the regular users of The Escapist who accused Turbine of shady practices to inflate their votes.
Alot of people also said there was nothing stopping the other developers from doing the same thing. Turbine ended up winning I believe. Anyway, aside from alot of negativity from the forum die-hards there, not much came of it, nobody vilifies Turbine in public...dunno if these guys should be treated any differently.
GM asked to hype the game..whats the problem here?
He didnt say hipe it to 10, he sayd to hype it...now people choose what score to hype...there is absolutly no problem with that.
I don't see any valid reason for admins to set the hype to 6. A GM isn't allowed to encourage people to rate their game? He didn't even say to rate it to 10.
As for the one guy who said he hyped it with a few accounts, so what? You can't punish a whole company because of the actions of a single player, whom they had nothing to do with. I bet lots of games have been hyped by people using alt mmorpg.com accounts anyway, it's not like you pay to own one.
So why exactly has this happend again? No valid reason.
Gremrod asked for players to cast their opinions here, yes. The problem I see is that some decided to go into zealot mode and started abusing the system here which we do not condone. Mmorpg.com is obliged to investigate any such claims and I hope they will see that Gremrods request still falls under fair use. I just wish they were just as eager to update game information like the update to the screenshot gallery we've been asking for since August.
Its because they know game is comming out SOON
so now they can squeeze money out of you
just wait and see
wonder if CCP payed MMORPG:com off to keep this game under a carpet, they know its gonna take HUGE chunk of eves population
Im a bit confused here.
I played the beta and really didn't like the game, but I do belive that they have the right to ask people to vote. And on top of that they never told them how to vote. However since he did ask them to vote on the PERPETUUM ONLINE FORUMS you would assume anyone interested in reading his post in some way found the game worthy of atleast some hype.
Look at it this way... when there is an election and the canidated for said election put up signs, advertise what they are about and basiclly openly say on TV "Vote for me!" I dont ever see people saying they shouldnt be doing that. Hype is really just another version of campaigning. Why shouldn't these people have that right to "campaign" on a site dedicated to the explodation and discussion of MMOs.
The company that represents this game should not be looked down upon for these action, warned in any way shape of for and nor should their hype meter be tinkered with in way. Otherwise you may as well just take down hype meters all together and change the sites name to www.dictatorofmmorpg.com and lose whatever credibility you may have in the game industly.
That must be it. It is a conspiracy!
I don't think that's as funny as it seems. Are there any laws in the US regarding how you name a 'service'? If I call my site a review/discussion community when in fact I am actually an advert for games that pay me enough money or are friends of mine am I open to prosectution in any way? Just wondering. I know on TV they have to state if they are advertising a product do the same laws not apply?

I'm sorry you feel that way.
So? Every game does this, Rift, swtor every game out there. And he is not a dev, he is a gm, he bears the same guilt as every other random guy posting the same thread on other games forums. Give him a break, shall you?
If we knew what he posted, then removed, about the other forum user abusing this system by using alternate accounts to add hype maybe things would be alright? It might also clear up some of these elaborate consipracy theories that are being conjured up.
The post I remove was me making a comment to said Perpetuum player "Nice, LOL" then later realized he may not be kidding. I have no way of proving that said user/player even hyped the game incorrectly. For all I know it was hyped by more players coming into the game since it went Open Beta.
I've talked to you in chat (in-game) and you seem like a very nice person, with no harm meant. I've no reason to doubt you at all, and posting here shows you are, who you are. I know that you are an older game like myself as well, iirc. If the thought of not being a GM for the game crossed your mind put it aside. please.
The game needs people like you in order to survive.
+respect to you
