How do you level in Rift?

jezvinjezvin Member UncommonPosts: 804

What will be the primary way to get exp in Rift?

Is it quest hub like WoW or group based grinding like FFXI.

Are seeking out rifts the way to get exp?

Anyone have any insight for me?

From what I've seen and heard, it will be a mix of questing, dungeon crawling and the rift/dynamic event system. Does anyone know if PVP is planned to be a viable way to level?

From a podcast with one of the main guys at Trion, they will also have XP for PVP/RvR, so you can level any way you wish....Its also supposed to be pretty comprable time wise.  Atleast thats the feeling I got from when they asked those types of questions, on solo/group ect...and then about pvp xp.

I expect it to be similar to EQ2 (or WoW or LoTRO) in terms of quests and mob killing being main sources of xp.  There will be solo and group content, including quests, dungeons and rifts (which can be thought of as mini-dungeons really).

So we can only assume it will be similar to WoW/EQ2 + rifts?

I read about how rifts work, I read about the dungeons. but how does it all fit in with character progression.

The devs have to have some idea about how people are going to progress through their game.

    AFAIK

You get xp from PvP, quests, Rifts(PQs), and dungeons.

I'm not sure what you are asking? All MMOs pretty much give xp the same way...

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

Rifts allow you to kill mobs.  So instead of grinding 200 zombies for xp and no other reward, you'll be able to kill mobs for XP, which should be a lot more fun.  Rifts basically give you something else to do for fun in addition to running through quests and static dungeons.  If you want to know what % xp a level 20 rift gives a level 18 character, I can assure you that not even the DEVs know at this point as this type of stuff usually gets tweaked very late in beta and even after launch.

How is this a complicated question. It dosn't have to be yes or no but still.

    Do you do quests?

    Do you hunt rifts?

    Do you dungeons?

Do you do any of those things in groups?

Are they trying to make them similar reward wise or do they show a preference towards one over another?

I don't understand how you can't answer this unless the devs are just throwing random shit in a bucket.

    Dude, it's been answered.

    Do you do quests?

    Yes.

    Do you hunt rifts?

    Yes.

    Do you dungeons?

    Yes.

Do you do any of those things in groups?

Yes, all of them are doable in groups.  Rifts and quests can be done solo, not sure if dungeons can.

Are they trying to make them similar reward wise or do they show a preference towards one over another?

    Not known yet.

I don't understand how you can't answer this unless the devs are just throwing random shit in a bucket.

Shit in a bucket has nothing to do with the fact that exact XP balancing usually takes place very late in the beta cycle and developers simply may not know the exact breakdown.

I don't care about XP balancing.

What you just said is they plan to have everything in the game, but so far have not said how they expect people to play the game.

What am I sapose to expect if I sit down and play this game?

    You play to have fun:P

If you mean you will be playing with whatever gives you the most exp, that is another question, since you will just be going where the biggest carrot is in terms of leveling.

It also depends on item rewards. Will leveling off of PvP be worthwhile? Well, who gives a shit about leveling if your PvPing, since if you level all the way PvP wise, you're going to probably take longer, but you'll also be a lot more experienced in terms of killing people and PvP gear rewards.

Just go with the generic answer that you will be doing a balance of all of these things, because you will have the opportunity to do all of them. So don't make it about what's the best for exp, because amazingly, end game will be there when you get to it. If you are a "hardcore" gamer (which is moronic from what I've seen from past MMO launches, where players wear themselves out and skip a TON of amazing content from grinding on X mob or X dungeon, but hey, each to their own) then you should know that nothing in finalized yet in terms of exp wise, because the game is in alpha. All you can know is that they will have the intent for giving players rewards for doing all of these things, and that they will try and balance these things to a degree. If that isn't a good enough answer for ya, we can continue beating this bush to death:P

From all I have read, every activity in this game can grant you xp. I heard recently that a player can even level just by crafting (never seen that in any online game before, other than grinding for materials).

I'll not say straight what the best way to level will be, from what people that have played have said, is questing, rifting and dungeons (they will overlap as you progress I'm guessing). Also you will get a fair amount from exploration as xp is given for finding new areas on the map.

Personally though I'd rather not rush towards end game, on a first character!

There will be towns and quest hub's, but a fair few of the quests will give rewards when complete, rather than having to return to a quest giver (this is fairly recent info btw).

As it is has been stated already, gaining XP, will happen in many ways. They have said if you wanted to only PVP you could get to level cap that way, the same applies for only running dungeons or questing. Given the lore they continually release there is sure to be an epic story that unfolds if you choose the questing route which will likely expose us to dungeons, rifts and pvp.

You're supposed to expect to do a few quests, while running quests (or between them) you will run into some rifts which you can expect to either do or not do (depending on how you feel at the time), then eventually you get some group quests, which you may or may not do (depending on whether you feel like grouping or not) and then you eventually get to some dungeons, which you may or may not do (depending on whether you feel like running a dungeon at the time).

    rinse and repeat.

then you can expect to eventually get bored of whatever you're doing (questing or rifting or dungeoning) and instead of doing that you go do one of the things you're not doing (questing or rifting or dungeoning).

    rinse and repeat.

it's not rocket science dude.  just like most games have quests and dungeons, rift has 3 things - quests, dungeons and rifts.  you spend time on whichever you feel is the most fun and helps you accomplish what you want to accomplish.  All will have some xp, loot and challenge.  These will vary.

Going to have to actually play to find that out aren't you? No one can answer that for you.

Jezvin you are asking questions that only people who have played the game will have the answers for you which is none of us. You say things like "will the game be fun for me?" ...how the hell should we know? We can't predict the future, and we certainly can't and probably don't want to predict YOUR future.

Are you seriously asking us these questions?

If you go to the website at www.riftgame.com and look at the information that is on the page it should answer most of your questions. If you have had any BASIC MMO experience you should know that there are quests to get xp, there are grinding mobs to get xp, and there is xp to be made from PVP like alot of games have incorporated.

Do some research instead of asking people who have no clue because they haven't even played yet. FFS.

you see pretty upset, and really the thread was going down away until you posted.

And first off I never asked will this game be fun for me thats a retarded question learn to read please.

This is a simple question I said how do you level in rift, it's context was focused towards MMOs becuase I got the idea that you are going to level in this game. But really the question is what am I expecting for an experiance with this game.

I'm sorry I didn't know this game was following the BASIC WOW model of questing to get exp. Shit lets see the last MMO i played where I grinded quest for exp... WoW release for 6 months. Maybe I don't auto think WoW when I see an MMO and the more I post in this thread the more I see just WoW.

You level by building giant barbecues in which you cook banana pies which you feed to a giant gorilla. Hope that sorted out all your doubts.

  • I really don't get this thread. First, you ask here how to level. After some answers, you ask if it's fun. Then, you say it's basically a WoW clone. Just because you will have to do quests or kill mobs to level ? (you can do PvP, rifts and maybe even crafting too to level).

Don't you have to kill mobs and do quest in LotRo, Aion....

Star Wars, Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2 too? It's a very basic concept and, while not innovative, does that automatically make a game like WoW? Also, the concept of questing and grinding goes way beyond WoW. Or is Everquest II a WoW clone too?

I can understand if people say Rift does not bring that much new things to the MMO genre. But a game being a WoW clone because there are quests? Are you trolling us?

Someone replied with you play games for fun, so I say back to him yeah and I want to know if rift will be fun. I didn't ask I just made the statement.

It would be like someone tells you to try a sandwich, you don't ask will it taste good to me, you ask what’s on it. I am asking what’s on the damn sandwich and I will make the decision if it's fun/good.

I’m just going to leave this thread alone the answer is pretty much here and now the thread is just getting to people who can’t read so good luck!
