Game Engine?

AmazingAveryAmazingAvery Age of Conan AdvocateMember UncommonPosts: 7,188

Hey guys, does anyone know what game engine Trion is using for Rift? is it their own/proprietary or a licensed one?

From the official vids it looks pretty similar to WAR's at a guess.

Cheers!

It's a modified Gamebryo engine. Yes, the same one as Oblivion.

From what I've seen so far the game looks very similar to WAR and from what I've heard it has the same public quest system that WAR has.

Make games you want to play.

After a while lookup: It is a modified version of the Gamebryo engine. I am not sure what WAR used.

Nah, Rifts PQ are more specific, have random spawn places and scale. But there are similarities.

I think the game looks beautiful. All I'm missing is a bit of anti-aliasing.

OH no NDA! The spawn location don't seem random, just which one spawns when is random. Other than that, its basically the same

Maybe they don't seem random to you, but it is stated that they are. Also, the beta site says that it's testing levels 1-20. Don't you think rifts at those levels would be a bit easier, since, you know, it's introducing the concept? Unless you enjoy get steamrolled all game. :P

I'd rather the game be fun and challenging throughout the entire process unlike 90% of MMOs.

I should say 99% of MMOs. The only ones that offered anything different in the last couple years have been

DFO, MO, Fallen Earth, APB Global Agenda (pretty good actually), Perpeturam, and other sandbox games being developed by really small companies (Xysom, Dawntide, etc)

Gamebryo is the same engine used by EA Mythic on DAoC and WAR.  I also believe its the same engine used by both Oblivion and Fallout.

Agreed, the only steamrolling I seen in many years is GW in hardmore.

They could at least have some hard and some easy servers. Just because it is a themepark does not mean it must be easy.

Regardless of "modification", the game engine, Gamebryo is fairly bad if you consider the alternatives. It wont have age of conan graphics, it wont have that weighted kind of feel in which you feel your character and the world around you actually has some mass rather than a floaty kind of walk.  It will feature many of the same problems that Gamebryo is known for and also hit the same limitations the game engine sets. Its a mmorpg and all art assets, normal mapping, specular mapping... everything will be even below the highest achievable point that Gamebryo can handle.

It really was a poor choice on Trion's part to go with Gamebryo. If the needed a bit of extra time and money to get everyone learning a better engine, they should have taken it. MMORPGS are investments, they are risks, do it right the first time and you will be better off otherwise you might just end up flushing your investment down the toilet.

While I may be giving the engine a harder time than it deserves... for a truly next gen game, a different engine should have been used.

I think the engine looks fine to be honest.    Heres the issue you need an engine that can handle somewhat high graphical requirements plus allow you to have 100 + chars in the same area without causing lag to mid range/high end systems and from previous games that used this engine this should work great for that.   Unlike games like Aion that used the FarCry engine i believe this game will not lag with 100-200 people in the same area if you have a nice PC Aion will no matter what.

It uses the terribad gamebryo engine whose creaters went out of business this year.

Gamebryo needs to die as it has singlehandlely made oblivion/Fallout3+ less than what they could have been.

    Playing: Tera, BF3, ME3

    Waiting on: Guild Wars 2

The engine is not the culprit in the downfall of these games utilizing it.

You can have a good looking game sitting on this engine, and you can have a challenging game with complex mechanics on this engine.  In the end, its what the developers do with it that makes the game, and they are failing to move the MMO genre past this simplistic, instant gratification, trivial, theme park paradigm that has plagued the industry since 2004.

Were you in the beta? If so I dont think you would have the same opinion . ;-)

Compared to previous mmorpgs, the graphics are below par. They are old gen, and this is due in large part to the engine, not just design. Gamebryo does not have any major performance advantage over other engines such as CryEngine or Unreal.

Personally I think the only reason Trion went with Gamebryo was the cost of licensing it and it's documentation. Keep mind this game is supposed to be "premium" and "next-gen", so it has to be seen that way in both the engine and the design. It either is or it isnt.

Anyways the only thing we can do is wait till the game is out and everyone can make their own opinion on if the game is being held back by the engine or not.

I tend to like the more stylized graphics styles in games.  The ones that try to push photo realism to far just end up leaving me with a twilight zone feeling like something is really wrong with this place.

Hyping and the actual truth are 2 different things. Remember that.

Mythic was hyping the crap about  their Public Quest system as well. About how dynamic and great they were.

Well, once the novelty wore off... didn't take more than a month... the PQ areas were barren as hell. No one bothered anymore. As most of them were just the same thing over and over and over again.

The Rifts in Rift are just WAR's public quests. Just in a different graphical jacket. (not breaking NDA here, as you can take that from the many videos available already). It's basically the same developers that are working on it (ex-WAR devs)

    OMG!

If this is true RIFT will meet a fast and painless death like all MMO's using the GameBryo engine.

GameBryo is the mother of problematic game engines, take a look at Warhammer Online it too using a modified version of GameBryo, and loading times to change maps are painfully long no matter what computer you use to play it. Bloodbowl, another game using GameBryo, and yet another game with enormously long loading times to change maps.

After I tried Warhammer Online I swore to never buy any game that use GameBryo, but who know maybe GameBryo made it better with multithread support?

But until I see it I wont believe it, the engine loads things 1 by 1 instead of trying to load multiple things at a time and queue them if its not possible, aka someone using single or dualcore CPU.

They did something right. Rift is seamless. No loading screens inside game and the stability is pretty good also.
