Rift is not new, you have seen this entertainment through and through. There are no truly new ideas in fantasy or fantasy gaming. There are, however clever juxtapositions that invite new perspective. Sometimes a game has these fresh combinations and actually delivers on them, other times they dwindle post launch and dry up.
I have been burned, true. I built a machine a couple years ago for a game called Vanguard. That game promised much, but did not deliver. It was pretty, too ambitious, too unfinished and ultimately collapsed.
I played APB, and loved it for a couple of weeks, all the while hoping that the needed changes would be properly implemented, but we know how that went down.
I have beta tested no shortage of games and have been doing so with Rift as well. There are some haters, some fans and some people on the fence. Again, these are typical with any game. Many of my friends are enthusiastic about SWOTOR, and I will watch that development as well, a few of them are trying out Rift and we will discuss it more as well. My money is on Rift, I pre-ordered and am eager to play.
Why?
For the following.
The Rifts are Novel.
Yes, in a few months they might seem more like bad weather than story based events. I seem to think that Trion has other things in mind with them than just random public quests. I am not delusional, I just think they are going to be enhanced in later patches as well.
The Setting is New.
Many detractors will say that a two faction system is not new, but I honestly feel that the way they are presenting it is interesting. I like the world. I have been playing table top RPGs since 1981, I want to play in this setting as it seems like a fun place to RP in, and reminds me of my own homebrewed game world.
The Game is Fun.
Fun is subjective. The goals of developers is to deliver a product that entertains and brings in the money. I will sign up for 6 months out of the gate.
