After reading some of the comments over at the official Rift forum, and on my blog, I know I was dead on right. Sure there are some that are nice and decent. The rest...
Your post here equates to nothing better than a pity party because some people didn't eat up your cheerished ideas with a big fork. You seem to feel you have every right to insult all and sundry but no one has the right to criticise you. And worse, in your angry rant you manage to lump the people who treated you fairly in with the malcontents. Sorry but that continued attitude has killed any previous respect I have had for you. I think before you try your hand at a serious journalistic endeaver you need to do a little growing up. Putting people on ignore is not something I do lightly, but since you seem hell bent on alienating anyone who doesn't kowtow and kiss your feet, I feel I have little choice. Goodbye and thanks for all the fish.
After reading this thread and bits of the posted links to the Rift forums, I have to agree with this quote.
In my experience with the Rift forums, specifically the Rift Beta forums, I have had no issues starting threads or contributing to threads there.
But this thread was a nice attempt to completely swear off an entire community.
After reading some of the comments over at the official Rift forum, and on my blog, I know I was dead on right. Sure there are some that are nice and decent. The rest...
You are not right or wrong on anything, it is simply your feelings. This is only digging your hole further into the ground. You are appearing to be a much less objectionable writer after all these posts. You only represented your own viewpoint, not mine or the majority. That is fine, but you are trolling as much as everyone else.
I find this behaviour shameful on all sides, but especially childlike on your own after reading about your original views and change of mind, within one day. I even find it hard to believe you are of the female persuasion.
After watching this behaviour it just leads me to believe that this board is just as badly patrolled by trolls as the official forums are.
Sadly I think it will not make it. They made so much stuff, they update etc. Some things are awsome, other things you laugh at and other stuff is just so bad you wanna turn it off.
Animations are very bad and thats something I don't think they will fix for a long time. And It's too WoWish and yet no Guild banks and what about when we hit max level? Battelgrounds 24/7?
The game is soon out and how far are we now? Level 30?
I think we will soon see some panic, they will just add stuff then some panic nerf and patch, patch, patch that will end up with Devs saying "In next patch we will fix this" and ofc they never do... until 3 years later when the game is empty ...!
I would agree to almost everything except for the patching speed. These developers seem to be extremely fast as far as crushing bugs and attending players issues is concerned.
Edit:
And since we're talking on this thread about Teala's observations, here's a something from the latest beta patch notes:
"* Level requirements have been removed from the previously-level 20 mounts. If you can get to them, and can afford them, you can use them. This includes the Collector's Edition turtle mount."
I don't know how much of an issue purchasing that mount is before level 20 (you still need the money after all, so you'll still buy it around that level), but it shows that these developers are both listening and reacting.
Oh, well. I guess I'll be running with my turtle around the second I leave the tutorial area.
Just the slightest hint that you think something needs addressing and the zealous fans start trolling immediately to shut the discussion down. This is what ruins games. Zealous fans that cannot admit that a game has flaws or is not as polished and finished as the developers claim.
Look at all the bad games that were supposedly great according to the fans! Warhammer and Aion anyone? It is one thing to say a game is good, it is another to trumpet it as the next coming and that is exactly what we've seen time and time again only to watch that games population dwindle to 1/20th what it was at launch.
We do not have a clue how the end game of Rift is at all. It still has no guild banks. Some combat animations are the suck. Melee combat sounds are the worst of any game I have ever played. That is just a few concerns. There are many more. Yet the fans of this game will not let anyone in the least bit critic it at all. Say one thing that is even the least bit of a criticism and they are on you like flies to poo.
1 word for what you just described - fanboi
Understand that fanbois exist not only in the mmo world, but in everything. They are weak minded people, followers, sheep. They find something that they like and cling to it no matter what, defending to the death regardless of how valid criticism is, because their "toy" or whatever you want to call it makes them feel happy and safe. Dont' want to take that away from them!
Powerful people can look at something, anything, and question it, challenge it, find the faults in it. Even things they enjoy or love, they are still willing and able to take an objective look at it. That's becaues those people don't NEED that thing to make them happy, they don't NEED it to be perfect.
If we had less sheep in the world, we would have higher quality of everything. Too many people will literally HAPPILY eat up poo if someone tells them it is candy.
What you describe as sheep are not only those who blindly follow their love object, but also those who blindly follow any objection and bad critique regardless of whether it's based on truth or is fabricated.
Shills would be out of job if that wasn't true.
So would be trolls, those who try to steer trouble just for the laughs and giggles.
Not that I'm accusing anyone on this thread of such behaviour or properties, but you have to realise that no side is innocent. The safest way to the truth of things is to grab a beta key and see the game in question for yourself
Also, for those who intend to spec specifically towards bard:
"* Motif of Encouragement: Rather than removing this entirely, it now causes up to 5 surrounding critter mobs to follow the Bard. Lasts 15 seconds. Yes, that means you can have a squirrel army."
I didn't read through all 110+ posts, so this may have already been said. If so, sorry, I just didn't care enough to read through every post.
The closed beta forum is not like the OP describes at all. There are many many threads with concerns and issues with the game if it is a legitimate concern the other beta testers will back up the OP or give reasons why the OP is wrong. There are some fanboys that show up on certain threads, but for the most part the beta forums are civil and full of good posts.
Now as for the public forums, well yea. What do you expect on the official forums for a product?
I mean serioulsy, if you go to the offiical BMW forums and start posting about how Lexus is better and how you think BMWs have tons of problems, what do you think would happen there?
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
I can only agree with Teala, which is why I gave up posting on their forum long ago. Every time I had posted even something remotely critical, I was jumped on my an agressive fanboi mob. Alas moderators there do nothing for you if you are not among the fanbois.
Indeed. The mods actually let the fanbois attack dogs grind down any dissenters, Abi has even joked about it on the podcast. They obviously prefer it like that.
Well, on the other hand, I don't bother with the official forum and I like the game. Too many free-riders chipping in their indifferent and irrelevant comments for my linking. Even the legit concerns and issues get buried under all this nonsense.
Just the slightest hint that you think something needs addressing and the zealous fans start trolling immediately to shut the discussion down. This is what ruins games. Zealous fans that cannot admit that a game has flaws or is not as polished and finished as the developers claim.

I looked at your thread in the Rift forums and I think you exagerated with the "Zealous Fans" remark.
Allthough I agree with your arguments I couldn't find any over the top fanboy troll post.
What I did see is an even number of people agreeing and not agreeing with you.
Maybe just send these findings through the ingame feedback option.

Typical behavior before and at each new MMORPG release. The hardcore fans, those who see the game as the new best thing since sliced bread, feel so insecure about it that they try to make more realistic people with a balanced view shut up. I suppose its a bit like ostriches who put their heads in the sand thinking that if they don't see the danger, it doesn't exist.

Not just new releases. Older games are like this as well (unless they have heavy moderation). The two worst games for forums that I have found are League of Legends (not an mmo I know) and WoW.
You're preview is pretty bad simply because you are so inconsistent. You complain that things are like WoW "And we already have games like that, and devs should make it new" and two sentences later you say "WoW has this, why would RIFT not".
You go on and complain about small bugs and features in the game ( Complaining of mount at level 20? Really? I liked not auto-running through the map honestly. Although they have made a change now and you can get mount at level 1 so you must be happy ) , without really touching on the major features of the game that work so well.
If it is a "Preview" you would be writing it also for people who have not played the game yet. But you just skim the soul system surface, without even putting any effort into research "I can't remember how many souls there are, but there's a lot" ( Really? Google search takes about 5 seconds ), when it's one of the most major features of the game.
For god's sake you don't even mention the Rifts, which honestly are underwhelming and don't deserve all the hype they received, that's one problem you could of talk about, the de-spawning footholds, the general repetition of rifts.

Go and read her suggestion thread. She's hands down more aggressive in her wording than anyone replying to it. Some are for and some are against it, but she seemed to have a huge problem with those against it.

Thats an old issue. They have to sell and misinformation does sell. removing unwanted questions or opinions contirbutes to increase misinformation about a game.

I don't hate anything, just observing and commenting
Wow...I really do not know who actaully posted my preview over at the official forums, but it set the entire place on fire. LMAO! I haven't seen a thread so laced with vitriolic hate, and disdain, since the old AC Darktide threads, long ago, on IGN. Good stuff though. Just goes to prove that even if someone praises a game, and says it could be the next big thing...they skip that, and go to the "squirrels!"
I told them if the didn't like me bringing up the squirrels, to sue me, in my preview.
Just a reminder to keep things civil in here. Agree or disagree with the content of posts, but don't toss around accusations or namecalling. Keeping the thread open for the moment, but if this continues, it will be locked.

I think they were less focused on the content of your "review," and more on the delivery of it.
"Amateurish" was what stood out most in that thread. I think most people were wondering how it ended up on the forum, given the nature of it, and why it deserved its own thread.
Man... Who would have guessed that Fans of a game, would take offense to someones negative opinions on that games official forums.
Just amazing...
I think anyone who actually gets offended, or is amazed that others get offended, at someone elses opinion on a game needs to step back a little and look harder why we are all here.
getting offended isnt required, we are all here to talk about games, no need to take it personally or get bent out of shape because others 'threaten' ones self identity and validity as projected by their choice of product.
Talking about games is good, teala was just talking about games, no need for anyone to be offended. They are just games.
But yes, as I and others have said, these forums are exactly the same as the official forum in how people choose to react to negative posts, except the 'report' button is spammed here more I would guess on anyone who dares to dissent. It's all cool though.
I have been around these forums for a long time and have seen posters come and go. They usually start out full of vinegar they tend to get less personally offended about game opinions and mature into better posters as time goes on.
This game has brought a lot of new users to this forum though from what i can see, probably more then a few from the official forums, and so the general Rift community is looking extremely over sensitive and ultra defensive, crying troll! and hater! at every opinion they don't like. Thats just the way it goes.
I think what we all forget is that every forum and every game has it's own culture, except that Rift's right now is a weird mix of WoW, aion, whoever's, as it settles itself down. It may get better, it may not, but I know I stopped going there a while back simply because of exactly what Teala describes.
There is a solid case of the emperor's new clothes going on over there right now though imo.
