One of my Grunts in the original X-Com. I named him Timmy Twospoons and he had been on the team from the first mission. Got to the very last battle. He Died heroicly. It was what he would have wanted but I was generaly guted. Was an unemployed stoner at the time and that game was my life. Was so out of it was beginning to think it was all real;) Honerable mention to Aeris from FF7. She will never be forgoten. Also a spoiler from Mass Effect 2. A certain young lady of uncertain temprament and great telecinetic ability who was my spured love intrest. She did not make it.:(
Hmm... The worst deaths in a game I would have to say Zack from Crysis Core. I knew he was going to die but watching him go down like that was just too much to take. I was locked in my room afterwards for a couple of hrs.
Chrono was really sad specially if you played the PSone remake. The animation made it even worst with the BGM to accompany. However, I figured you would be able to bring him back since you own a freaking time machine. His death wasn't that crazy compared to Zack.
And for the DA2 The first time I saw his mother I was like.. W T F NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! WHY... And I reloaded my Year save to try and fix it. Then I go to the forums and realize you cant, I was like FUCK YOU BIOWARE!!!!!! After my second playthough, however, I find it easier to take. Zack still gets me everytime though.
My 2 cents
At least with a sub game they know that people won't tolerate bullshit and leave. With anet we have no recourse but to buy our own lube so our assholes don't get too stretched out from getting bent over a table at Anets will. - Hrimnir
The most depressing death for me was the first true friendly character death I recall: Lavitz in Legend of Dragoon, I was 10 or something and remember going in my room and crying at night saying "Its not fair "...lol. I absolutely hated Arthur who replaced him. I can't actually remember a time before or since that a cried over a video game, eyes got watery, but nothing more.

Yah lavitz was a tough death, But I really liked Albert just because he was hard to master. He did faster combos and such. Lavitz death was also really anticlimatic. He just ran into the dragon sword and got 1 shotted.

When Aeris dies in FF7. The first and only time a game made me shed a tear.
Gotta go with that.
I'm just not that into DA2, so when his mother died I was kinda apathetic.
Almost inexistent role in the plot and a random death dont makes the character very attached with the player , to the ones who did it tho, I congratulate you for being very sensitive for such things

Well it depends, If you dont talk to your mother at all then yes it is a random character. But I did talk with her often so It still feels bad. If she had been burned or something i could take, but it was the way she had to go that was shocking.

pretty much the death of every einherjar in Valkyrie Profile before u recruit them. since u recruit souls of fallen warriors, the game shows u their stories before their death before ur able to recruit them. accompany them with some of the most beautiful and saddest music u've ever heard in a game and u got urself a heck of a story-telling in a game. it's such a shame there weren't enough copies of the game back then in NA, that it got overshadowed by the FF series.
the most depressing of them all, imo, were Shiho's and Suo's recruitment.
Tassadar's sacrifice in the original Starcraft. 13 years ago, but I can still remember the goosebumps and the tear I shed. Of course, a 2 minute clip will never get you emotionally connected to the character.
I'd have to say that we as gamers do get into our storys and characters that when they die we do shed a tear because we were close to the characters and story to such a point its just heartbreaking when they pass.

This and the part of ff8, where Rinoa is floating off into space, first time I didnt keep her dead central in my screen, I got the message "Rinoa was lost to you forever" THE END!
It happened at 6.30 am just before i was due to go to work, that depressed me xD
Edit: The Aeris death scene was totally unexpected, it isn't often a major player character dies in these type of games, especially from that era. Ofc in final fantasy tactics when you get Squall as a recruit, you meet her again selling flowers (very touching moment :P)

?? That didnt happen to me. At the end Rinoa and Squall got together, that was my ending.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.

Gotta agree with John Marston. A really depressing end to a fantastic game; storytelling worthy of the best in the industry.
Joe's death in Mafia 2 was a close second.
For me it was Luna (aka Goddess Althena), Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue.
I was very young then and very obsessed with Lunar. After learning what had happened to Althena I was completely devastated!
It was for the best that it happened the way it did. Still! Argh, I want a remake/reboot of the series some day

Amazing...even after what 13 years, FF7 is still mentioned. However I have to agree on that.
Gotta go with that.
