Fighter groups flying in from airfields 40km away to help against enemy divebombers attacking our tanks and artillery.
Infantry fighting ahead of our tanks to try to clear out enemy defenses so our tanks can move up to support the assault on town itself.
Paratroopers who have formed up from airfields arrive and 30 paratroopers lands at the facility in town to cap it and have our group on the ground outside link up.
All happening at one of the towns under attack in our continous campaign simulating the warfare across north-west europe in world war II.
We have factories that researches and produces material for use on the frontline, and they can be bombed to slow down progress!
We have brigade deployments on our 1:2 scale sized map over north west europe, with factories and town stretching from southeast England to the west part of Germany.

The most impressive aspect of wwiiol is the sheer scale of the game
You lift a RAF Boston Havoc at Folkestone in Kent and steadily climb to 20,000 feet, passing over the English Channel, carefully checking above you for 109s as you pass over the French coast. You fly through the clouds over Dunkerque, and onto the busy port of Antwerp, close to the front line raging with armour and infantry battles. You fly on through Holland, past Eindhoven and onto the German Ruhr factories.
You go through the precision operation of dropping your payload, still scanning for the dreaded 09s, but your Spitfire escorts keep them at bay. Almost there. The tension is palpable. Stay on target. Almost there...bombs away.
Bombs away, head for home lads. Navigate a safe route, drop alt for speed, arm the gun positions.
Back over Eindhoven, along the Albertkanal, past the friendly AAA of Antwerp Airfield and you feel safe. Fly on, past the waging war and settle down to land back in Blighty, coasting to a stop overlooking the white cliffs of Kent.
Nothing I have ever, ever experienced in gaming comes close to matching the thrill of a simulated WW2 bombing run, with TeamSpeak chatter adding as much tension as the clattering cannons of a Messerschmidt 109.

all i could think is why hasn't anybody laughed at the mid 90's graphics & animations?!
I still play old games from 10yrs ago but they still look 5 times better graphically,
I know its not all about graphics & animations but ffs It looks so bad i couldnt take it seriously.

I thought the same thing until I actually logged in and played. The first time you find yourself in a live fire area with no kiddie overhead names in red to spot the bad guys. No minimap to hold your hand. All you hear is the pop pop of gunfire and your ears ringing when a mortar lands a little too close to your fox hole. First night I found myself and a small squad dug into a blown up school house with Germans all around us and only a couple holes in the brick walls around us gave a way in. I sat there for 2 hours with those 5 guys watching those holes in the wall shooting anything that poked its head in. Smokes grenades I couldn't see shit and out of no where one of your squadmates would just keel over. My heart hasn't pounded like that in a game for years and I swore I had only played a few minutes when the 2 hours was up. Yes, the graphics are out of date but the game play a realism is way beyond Call of Duty. Get into a good unit, crawl on your stomach for 200 yards to sneak up on a Panzer hidden in bushes and slap a satchel change on it. The audio alone is worth it. To hear tracked vehicles in the distance and to play with folks that know what it is just by the sound minutes before anyone spots it. Good people, good game.
The graphics are not 2011 I will grant you, but not that they are mid 90's
Screenshots do not serve this game right either, you will know when you stand on a hill looking at the incredible landscape ahead of you.
Even the (unfortunately) outdated screenshots found here on mmorpg.com look pretty good I think!
The infantry models, who were kind of funny looking were fully remade in 1.33 and look pretty damn impressive.
But due to the massive scale of the map, and that we play for the idea of the game rather than graphics - we can not be 2011 looking.
The graphics don't compete with the top arcade games, I'd agree. But there's so much more in this game than just cosmetic prettiness.
The way each Campaign ebbs and flows, through the different timezones. One side will have the momentum, then the other side will have a Helms Deep moment and the tide shifts. it's utterly absorbing.
And with no real grind, no buffs, no artificial crutches - a day 1 newb can put down a 5 star general like a dog.
It's brutal, it's challenging, it's intense.

Reason why the graphics aren't uber as per topline shoebox players is the game does somethign very different.
Its a persistent 24/7 half sized map of Germany, Holland, Belgium, France and Luxembourg that German, Frenc and British forces are fighting across.
You spawn in, your view and range of movement isnt just across to the other side of the box or arena, but is unlimited until you run out of fuel...or walk of a cliff if you start in England ;P

I was on leave and came back to kick some gerry butt, untill I discovered the rats have raised the price to play this game to $18.00 per month.
That is the most expensive price for any game and it's unreasonable. The rats wil drive off old players(such as I, ..I still have my WW2 online original launch BIG box) and that price will discourage any new ones.
If they fix the price, I would come back.
That is actually a major point. The game costs per month almost as much as it did to buy the box itself.
They are trying to use small rooms called RAs now to upgrade the graphics. In the main server where everyone typically plays the graphics cannot be very detailed because most computers cannot handle loading so much and cycling through it each routine. Also you can see so far that you have to render everything that is far away. This causes lag or stutters as the old 1996 engine swaps things around sequentially.
While the game has its big points it is basically stagnant. Though I do have to say they have added American units to the RA or small scenarios rooms or they are saying it will come in next patgh. The problem is that the game has so few players now placing some of these in a small room will only detract from the current method in the main server of putting icons or yellow squares where the other players are so you can find them.
Then an interesting phenomenon happens . You kill the same guy or are killed by the same guy over and over and over again. It used not be this way. You would meet someone every few days or weeks now with player concentrators it is a madhouse small room effect that takes you 30 minutes to move around to find that same player. It just gets too frantic with one moment all you do is chase one with six shooting over your shoulder or your are running from six while they shoot over each other to get to you. Really wierd.

Oh by the way it is refreshing to see a comment such as yours. It is an honest comment about the game and its value. If you would have made that comment in the Game's forums you would have been deleted and banned. Something to say about creating a picture while you look in a mirror that says you are wonderful while the picture keeps turning awful (AKA . Dorian Gray)
But they are trying. Really they are but with no competition in a full online WWII Wargame you dont need to create an illusion of progress.
I personally think that they could add variety by adding another Front /MAP that could be switched too after one campaign ends in a win or loss for one side. It could actually transgress into a full world war type wargame where if the French and British Lose then the map swaps to the Germans and Russians. If the Russians win their territory back then the game swaps back to the Americans landing at DD day and fighting to defeat the Germans on Western Europe again. That would certainly add allot of variety and add to the games interest for a long time. But who is wishing or dreaming it has always been that with this game.?
Best PvP game ever made.
Except the PVP is what cheapens the game. If you enjoy spending 15 minutes of play time per encounter. The game strategy is basically one of the more interesting factors about this game. It is sadly cheapened by the PVP play aspect. Instead of fighting a nameless enemy for your side the Devs of this game fell into the PVP statistics/name of your enemy reporting and the wargame fell apart because of it , leaving the game a small niche game of die hard we are the best over you PVP types that for the most part would rather play other small room games or play one on one type games while the main server goes empty. The game had a huge crowd before they put in the I killed you more times than you killed me types were given all the development in this game.
There is some movement back toward a wargame but it may be too little to late. Only time will tell but it seems the latests development of RA small room/high grapic area for combat is centered around capturing the small room player PVP type person again. The illusion of competing with modern EA or Il Sturmovik type games with huge dev teams is quite compelling but may not be very profitable for this really small and differently mixed dev team.

Your sorties ends, you find out who killed you at a report screen once you unspawn from the game workd. You never see who you've killed unless you go to an offline stats page.
The way you describe it, it's as if LARGE BOLD LETTERS pop up every time you fire a shot YOU KILLED ANGRIFF! 10 POINTS!

FPS games needs to simulate logistics.
This is a game that is much more real in that it is very very open, and simulating real life logistics is not all that easy.
For those who have read this forum, they will know what nerf09 and angriff are about, and not put too much into it ;-)
Awe it's too hard, let's go the easy route.
Its a great game, had good times there, but the pricing isnt justifiable anymore for me. For what it is its far to expensive, I cant imagine its attracting many new players once they see it, only the die hard few that have been there for years already.
Its not your up to date CoD graphics but its also not your sandbox ,run and gun arcade BS either. This game it makes so you care if you die unlike all the kiddie shooters out there. You can either play with the big boys or stick with the pretty graphics and unrealist combat with all its nifty, unrealistic "perks".
There's a free trial. Only way to find out is to load up and play.
I wish they had a "welcome back soldier" promo again..
@Angriff - whilst I don't agree with the majority of your postings I read I do read the point about stats - it adds somethign to the game but at the same time if you become obsessed with them (like some air aces and squads) it can be detrimental.

WWIIOL is one of a kind. If youve missed it, your may be missing out.
So how exactly is a MMOFPS a "sandbox"?
Its more than a MMOFPs. Its a mixture between MMOFPS, MMOFlightSim, MMOTankSim and MMOShipSim all playing combined in one huge zoneless big virtual Sandbox where two sides fight over 500+ cities and where one side finally wins.
I'm playing this game on and off since its release in 2001. No other game held my interest for so long! 10 years..thats incredible! Its quite an intense game and I like the variety of gameplay and having a big virtual WWII MMO-battlefield where every player and his actions have an impact on the fights and success or failure of his faction.
Graphics look old, but You can look for many miles in this game. Keep in mind that fast moving airplanes and slow infantry play together in this virtual world, so visibility must be a lot more in here than in the known other eye-candy shoeboy shooters, where only infantry plays in small map levels.

Life is too short to play bad games.
The problem I have with this game is not the graphics or age but lack of subscribers.
Once they're ready they're gonna do a mass media push in order to get more of this out there. The push you see being made here is from us players.
Who kills you is told to you when you despawn. That allows the call out .. that such and such is in a certain area at a certain altitude it they are in the air. One time I travelled a long distance behind lines to flank a town under attack. Part of the town was far away from the rest and I caught essentially a guard off guard and killed him. Then suddenly I found several people hunting in the area. I thought it was just a call to defend the AF or whatever and moved. Soon I found many more than you would usually see in the area and started to retreat. I soon ran out of space and was killed. Chalk it up to good defense but then later in their censored forums a post was placed showing that the guy had ID'd me on open channels and brought in many more players than would normally be needed to counter a lone vehicle. He bragged of course on the forums.
This is shining example of how the game no longer is a wargame with nameless enemy that needs t obe countered but a cheap simulation of I killed you or you killed me. Who you killed is told to you in a stats page also where they take off from that is what turned this game into just another war simulation but with poor graphics.
Why do they have poor graphics it is because the game originally was designed to be a huge continent wide arena of open wargamming warfare. The issue is that instead of wasting all that effort on stats, reporting servers and fixing them when they break every other month and stuck to their core strengths the game might have become something of what it was hyped as. Many top companies have grown into huge corporations by sticking to core ideas instead of branching out for every little nuance in the market.
