Dungeon-crawling mmo
Not DDO.
I tried Spiral Knights recently (http://www.spiralknights.com/) and I like certain things about it. The ridiculous levels of accessibility and simplicity, for one. Also, the general formula of social + dungeons + ... that's it. However, the nonexistant character customization outside of obtaining gear, the over-the-top cutesy art style, and the weird cartoon sci-fi steampunk theme I don't much care for. Do you know of anything with a more traditional fantasy style, but with a similar formula? Browser/java is nice.

Gameplay revolves around running instances/dungeons with up to a team of 4, plenty of side objectives, bosses, and combat is fun if you prefer an action-oriented game.
No, I can't play anything with preset characters.
diablo 2 is the best choice till diablo 3 comes out

I've played tons of MMOs and havnt really seen exactly what you want. But if someone knows anything that fits the criteria then I would love to know as well!
You may like Guild Wars 1, other than that there is only DDO in that genre type, what dont you like about it?
My buddy that was playing that game and got fed up with the shop picked up Guild Wars to play with me and he's having a blast. I would imagine it plays the same way as a hub + dungeon crawler.
You might check out Mythos. It is a Diablo-style MMO, no preset characters, etc.
GW was my first great MMO love. It's no dungeon crawler. Though I see how it could maybe be mistaken for one.
As for Mythos, I'll look into that.
Scratch that, Mythos is in closed beta.
diablo 2 and 3 are both mmo's but you play with a max of 8 at a time like you are in a dungeon all the time... trust me you still interact with people and diablo 2 still has plenty of people that play it.

We noticed. But what you're asking for isn't an MMO. You want a multiplayer dungeon crawler. Not the same thing.
As it stands, until PSO2/Mythos/Hellgate come out, Spiral Knights is one of the best options for that sort of gameplay.
The distinction that I make is that in one, all of the core gameplay is online.

i really wanted to try mythos, unfortunately, there are issues with US on EU servers if you are an unlucky one, the patcher will never load. its a common issue on the boards
If you happen to have a PSP there is also Phantasy Star Portable 2, which is not too bad. It's not a MMO, but you can connect with friends online and run dungeons together.
Other than that I think Mythos is the only one. I'm not sure, but I thought Battle of the Immortals (or something like that) was similar to Diablo.

but I think you might like Two Worlds 2 if you want to shell out for the box price. me and my brother picked it up and it's been pretty fun so far duno about replay value. and yes i know its not mmo but it is online with small groups.
Theres another one that was a mmo of sorts made by ncsoft i think "goblin" or "horde" (late here and i dont feel like lookin it up) duno if its still open but i use to play it was prety fun for a weekend game.
