Well, the two games will be toatly different. Pen and Paper is a breed apart from Computer games, thought you may want to play the MMORPG first so as to not go into it with experiences from the pen and paper game, and be dissappointed, but if you play the PnP version first you will have more experience in this new world, and you can start to understand how things work in the game. I would suggest that you play the pnp first but you dont have to wait to play the pnp, to play the mmorpg.

ALso dnd is an awsome game in pnp.

Yeah I would just plain suggest you play the PnP, just to try it. If you've got a good DM(or good players), it's an awesome time.

As for computer games, you might want to give Neverwinter Nights a spin, it uses an adapted version of the 3rd edition ruleset that doesn't stray too far from the PnP. In the end though I'm hoping DDO will be even truer to the PnP rules.

Id agree. Never Winter nights is nice. Good stroy, easy to jump into. If you really want a true game that stays to the pnp rules, I suggest Elemental Tempel of Evil. it is based souly on 3.5 rules and is Sooo nice. it does tak alittle knowledge in the game so thats a good follow up to a real pnp session, so its one to look into.

but Playing pnp in general is a good idea.

Personally, I'd say not to play the original version.  If you can find a group to play 3.5 rules with, go for it, but the old rules are totally different.  There were no feats or talents in the original rule book and a lot was left up in the air for GM's to figure out what they wanted to do.  3.5 does a great job laying out characters rationally and has a lot of different features which take some learning to get into.  If you want to try out computer based D&D, as said above, Neverwinter Nights, Temple of Elemental Evil or the Icewind Dale series are good computer games to give some feel for it, although Icewind Dale is a bit outdated, I think it's version 3.0.  Good luck and if you can do some pnp rping it will perhaps give you a better idea how to roll play in an online version, a lotta peeps could use some of that from my experience.  Peace. ;)

Totally agreed with the above posts. Although I found Temple of Elemental evil, although very true to pnp, a bit on the boringish side. It was very, very well constructed though so I think most rpg-lovers will actually like it.

the best D+D computer game in my opinion is the Baldur's Gate series. NWN didn't even come close.

it's quite hard to get hold of a copy though. it sells cheap on EBay i think.

Not that hard to get a copy.  I remember seeing it all Wal-Mart with ToB exansion not too long ago for about $20.  Might also try Best Buy, GameStop, etc.

Also, I gotta say I really like NWN.  Not as true to PnP as ToEE, but it's got a great community and tons of modules to play, due to the fact that the game includes a toolset which allows you to design your own modules.  Platinum edition includes NWN + both expansions, although I've heard it has a few issues.  If you want to know more, I'd suggest checking out the forums at nwn.bioware.com
