So what makes an mmo so appealing?
I thought to myself playing mmos growing up was fun. But what appealed to me so much. So just wanted to see other peoples reasons or general ideas.
Your welcome to make your suggestions or inputs these are just some of my points.
The idea that you can one up the other guy next to you. To me it seems that the appeal is that you are a step ahead of the competition and that you can attain something else the other person can't
The idea of meeting up with friends and community to share in something together.
The idea that people can let their personalites effect their role in game. Such as leadership, team playing individual
These are just some idea I came up off the top of my head. Your welcome to add to these because I am sure there are a lot of other reasons people would play.

Ill add mine!
The idea of being able to play with other people.
Theidea of being able to watch as other people play.
Thats basically the appeal of MMOs to me. Nothing about attaining but just playing games with other people o.o

Well isn't that the same as any other online type game?
I enjoy meeting people from across the country and around the world. I'm not to big on combat or character progression. I just like to hang out and enjoy good conversation. I generally gravitate towards support roles, so that others can bask in the glory.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

Being a part of a community in a persistent "virtual world" is the thing I most like about MMOs.
Many recent MMOs seem to have deemphasized this part of their games, which seems detrimental to me. To each, their own.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
Being immersed in another world, especially with other people.
Probably why I haven't found an MMO in a while to stick to, none of them are worlds, just games with menial tasks.
People.
Pitty games are getting more and more solo-oriented. To a point where I am considering dropping MMOs for good and just play some sandbox standalone game ala Elder Scrolls.
For me, it's the creation of another me, a separate life that I can life. For that to work well and be more fun, I need a vast, interesting world to explore, full of mystery and opportunity. I need excellent characters to meet and interact with, that can create joy and frustration in my new life. I need fantasy, something outside of the real world that I'm stuck in. I need creatures unknown to the real world. I need fun and interesting, as well as challenging combat to engage in. I need to be able to shape the world somewhat for my personal use and desire, housing, structures, etc. I need advancement, goals that will get me closer to my next goal and closer to the next. And I need to feel important in this world, not just another lacky that isn't needed amongst the million others just like me. I must be a unique individual that can only provide what I have to offer and none other can be the same.
Yeah I think the whole aspect of that was for me too. I preferred the idea of being able to share that specific game experience with those people you normally wouldn't get the chance to do or meet.
Sound like my dream mmorpg. If you know of something like this please share.
Ditto.
For me it'd be playing with a group of friends. But all my real life friends suck and dont play PC games. And making friends in MMOs is next to impossible.
Yup. I really MISS immersion.

That I can play with my husband, and people-watch (and occasionally interact with them just as in the real world you might open a door for someone ).
The fun of MMO's for me is interacting with other people, taking on tough challenges with other people, the way the classes interact with each other to create a powerful force - Warrior protects Cleric who heals Enchanter who is keeping extra mobs off Warrior.
Unfortunately, developers don't realise that this is fun, so it's all gone the other way. Solo play is the main focus of MMO's now, and instead of working with other people we're being told to work against them in PvP battlegrounds or even worse, open world PvP. I've never seen the appeal of PvP in MMO's, unless the game is specifically designed for it, such as Planetside.
sploring the world and meeting new people
Back in the days compared to now:
I loved looking unique - everyone looks the same now.
I loved social guilds - i still love social guilds.
I loved when the world was important - the world is empty and left behind now.
i loved meeting new friends - i havent got one friend for years now.
I loved doing teamwork with guildies - thanks god i still love doing it nowadays and it happens alot more.
I loved having a special dps role - kidding me? All DPS just DPS nowadays. Copy paste oh please.
I loved world pvping - i still love it though its not as furious.
I loved battlegrounding - i still love it nowadays, just remove immortal healers from cap the flag.
I loved helping new players - the game is nowadays just soloable and they are just asking for gold lolz.
Why do i keep playing MMOs then? Cause of my guild. Its the guild or forget it. I can help my guildies, chat with them, pvp with them, dungeon with them, etc. I love guilds in MMOs, great possibilities etc.
