Lets start by having you watch this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8CPNUEfcoc
In this video you see.. typical UI, typical mmorpg quests/ideas. The combat looks extremely boring.... What moves did he use... oh yah explosions and shoot a laser gun....
I see an mmo like rift and like wow and like all the rest that uses the same ui and ideas.
What makes this game different? The fact that its the star wars universe?
I mean come on... the graphics arent even good... have you seen guild wars 2 and battlefield 3.... get with the future...
Someone point out why they think this is good or revolutionary because the things that people havent see is what they tend to say is the good aspects. Its all a bunch of BS, this game looks worse then rift did and that game wasnt even that bad.
*I should probably input that dynamic events are the future of games.... so i guess questing makes SWTOR downgrade?
Get off the Star Wars band wagon and stop fan boying, this game analzyed from an MMO point is so typical and fail.... remember this when it launches.
BIG Edit* The main idea is... from what i have read and seen the general mmo industry wants to see different and better games... have you seen why people ripped apart RIFT... thats a unique storyline... not some ripped off book or movie. Bioware doesnt have to use as much creativity and the game looks typical. This site MMORPG also claims that the game is revolutionary... so I am helping people to not be misinformed.
you can play it all day if you want... have all the Star Wars you can possibly have! Im just sheddling light on what this game isnt because people tend to be very fan boy.
*added poll for whoever cares... im just making a point.
*http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/367/feature/5424/page/1 this is the article that I feel is wrong... theres no information to back up any points while looking at this video it answers itself. This is not industry changing and I feel his ideas were biased because its Star Wars....

Okay im going to stop having fun guys, he told me too. So time to cancel my pre-order because this guy said its not going to be good. Glad with have this Seer here to tell us the future of the game.
you can have all your fun and play what you would like.... but BS reviews and people talking this game up with hype.... that is the most misinformed thing ever.... its the least thing from revolutionary in the mmo industry
Sorry but I personally think you are making a mistake in thinking that most people looking forward to this game give a rats ass about if the game is revolutionary or not. Nor does Bioware have any requirement to live up to your own exacting expectations. Starting a brand new thread demanding people justify the direction the developers of this game took because it doesn't meet with your approval of what an MMO should be is not only a waste of everyones time but arrogant whining to boot.

Look he's 'analzyed' it. Don't argue.
SW:ToR will have the same impact that Rift did. It will make developers see that it's possible to develop a game that isn't a glitchy, bug infested mess at launch. That you can release a game with all the features enabled on launch day.
Once it's possible to release complete, functional games, it will happen.
Remember that when SW:ToR launches.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
i think the fact that it is STAR WARS will be the biggest drawing point. me personally, i was hyped by it as well until i watched all the trailers and the gameplay vids and realized its just not what im looking for, ESPECIALLY the crafting system. still though, im sure a majority of mmo players can have fun with it. as for me i think ill wait for a few months after release. theres plenty of games to satiate my cravings until then
I didn't know pre-ordering was so enjoyable. I guess i'm missing out on all the fun.
I like how people bring up graphics...when EQ2 and WoW came out EQ2 had the "better" graphics...most people could not play with the graphic turned up and even when not the graphics still dragged down the game. I think the "better" graphics of EQ2 were a big part of the thrashing by WoW.
Games matf91 wants to play: ...Star Wars: The Old Republic...
Hmmm. I smell rotten fish in Denmark.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
I see you dont care if its revolutionary or has a new feel to it... even though thats what the general MMO consumer wants in future MMO's. Making a claim like this is so awful because most people on these forums are older and huge star war fans but this site MMORPG.com... who should know everything about MMO's, has claimed that this game is revolutionary and it is far from that.... it is so typical...
Good post!
This si the first gameplay I have seen of SWTOR, and I would say it almost looks like from a graphics standpoint, its very cartoony like WoW but not as bad.
The only thing this game has going for it in a big way is that there is hardly any if at all any Sci Fi MMORPGs, thus it does fill a void. I would not say the combat looks too boring, but its not close to what I expected.
I think you are correct in many ways; however, the game has 3 other BIG things going for it.
BIOWARE has a great track record of great quality games and many including me played their eternal gem of an RPG Baldurs GAte II as well as others from ther D&D universe.
Also, its Star Wars...and although i am a more of a Warhammer 40K fan, there are many others who are Star Wars fans who like me, would buy anything with the Warhammer 40K label, or in their case Star Wars.
In addition, as I mentioned prior, it fills a void with a much needed Sci Fi title of which MMOs are lacking.
My hopes are that at the very least the game somehow breaks the mould of todays MMOs, even if its in only one area.
Because if it can do that somehow even in one area, maybe it will carry forward to future titles.
But I see your point, I am very disappointed by that video.
I liked the graphics style SWG had, which was a great game until they changed it, albiet it was an EQ type grind, but I am so tired of cartoon type graphics.
I play MMOs... I am a connoisseur... I will play this game in beta but from everything I see its not anywhere near what the hype and talk of it is. I hate people who are ignorant and misinformed... I have watched videos and studied the game mechanics.... its typical... i will not claim it a great or revolutionary game... its just wow with Star Wars... cool stuff
Learn the difference between graphics and art style.
Try and comprehend that watching is not the same as playing.
If you just watch GW2, it looks like the same combat as every other game just with rolling and seizure enducing animations.
Try and understand that the crafting and equipment system is done better than most MMOs we've seen.
Step out of your box and see that BioWares emphasis on story isn't just fluff and that its a major impact on the way people will go through the game.
Stop and think that there are entire worlds dedicated to end game content, one world dedicated totally to solo players.
Ask yourself what amount of content is available throughout 17 worlds, some of those worlds larger than the entirety of some other games.
Try to recognize that, just because you have a hotbar doesn't mean the combat will so closely resemble WoW.
Think about Companions, how just having one with you can change the content you experience, or how you tackle opponents both with or without a group.
I could go on all day, but you've made up your mind. Just because you see something one way, doesn't mean everyone does.

Watch that and tell me what seems more revolutionary and the step that the MMO industry should be taking... What you told me is that bioware can follow a story that is already written in books and recreate it while added content that somehow makes there dungeons unique becuase there on different worlds instead of zones.... gameplay is more important because if its boring going through the story... who wants to play it
I do not understand why some people are jumping down the OPs throat.
He gave an opinion and backed it up with a video.
And even admitted he is like many of us a MMO veteran who despite his concerns will still at least try SWTOR.
Thats the irony of most MMO vets, we will try any AAA title especially if its a major IP...you try it and see if you like it.
And there is nothing wrong with being BLUNT in ones opinions. He like many of us are passionate abut MMOs and are tired of trying to find the Holy Grail of MMOs for almost 12 years now and seeing no hope in sight.
IMHO the best way to play a MMO, even a mediocre one is with your own RL friends or even online RL friends you never met.
Avoid the random groups, i.e. PUGS and dont get burnt out.
For example, my old D&D group from my college days of the 1980's gets together every Friday and Saturday night for 3 hours of LOTRO.
Doing so with these RL friends an even 1 or 2 online friends made LOTRO which I was tired of, a totally different game.
I will be doing the same with SWTOR.
NO ONE calls Hans Solo a *****............damn trekkies
Really? Wow I did not know you had been voted to be the spokesman of what the general MMO population wants out of a game. Again your whiny arrgance (and veiled childish insults) negate any relevant point you might have. All you are doing is parroting the tired Wow Clone argument and pretending that your own warped and frustrated opinion bears more weight than anyone elses.

I am in the beta {mod edit}
Dear OP,
You are correct .. the game is not revolutionary, it is meerly a Mmo following the same principles established by those that have gone before it. There will be slight variations on past designs, small tweaks on beloved grinds, and radical shifts in quest participation. None the less .. it is still an mmo, an mmo based on the rules of a system built before it ; because of this it will never be as grand or inventive as your imagination is. ( Tongue in cheek )
It looks like a fun time though...
This is an extremely jaded viewpoint based on what seems to be a discontent with MMORPGs in general. A Revolution = the overthrow and destruction of the former paradigm. There are plenty of customers willing to buy and play an MMORPG in the mien of current games, so while you are clearly unhappy that the MMOFPXX has not evolved yet, the industry is moving along at its pace. When they do try new things, the result has often been financial punishment by the customers, so they don't have any great impetus to be over-innovative.
Survivor of the great MMORPG Famine of 2011
It is obvious that you are one of those hardcore Star Wars fans and merely doesnt look at games with an artists eye. MMOs continue to go downhill and this game is more so the same.... I am not here to fight and make enemies but ..... I disagree with this site MMORPG.com claiming this is a revolutionary game... I hope the editors and people who work at this site are knowledgeable enough to understand what a ridiculous claim that is...
LOL thats what you took from my post? That they can follow a story from a book and dungeons are unique because of worlds? Sorry, but you missed your mark there. The gameplay won't be a problem in SWTOR, it has a familiar hotbar, but other than that, you have no auto attack, and a lot of reactive abilities, the cover system, and some other pretty good functions for classes.
You showed me a video where he rolled around and used pretty much the same skills over and over. Thats great, and I'm looking forward to GW2, but I also played DCUO which had a much better combat system, but it doesn't really matter as the combat will get stale in enough time.
SWTOR has a lot going for it, including the combat, even if you don't see it, or choose not to believe what others who have played it have said.
Why does it need to be revolutionary or innovative? I've been waiting for a good sci-fi based MMO since Anarchy Online. Bioware has a great track record with me (not so much with Dragon Age but it was still a well made game), and Star Wars is one of my favorite Sci-Fi settings.
I've always loved the voice acting that bioware adds to their games, for me, it really adds to the story, or at the very least places greater emphasis on it, to the benefit of the whole game.
i dont care if it will be revo or the next new wow or the most awesome things.
I know that im going to buy it and play cus i like starwars and sfci-fi mmo's.
End of story
Personally I don't believe TOR will change the industry either. However, I can't say I agree with the way the OP argued it. Simply because it was presented as a more personal "this is what I think is better" point of view and there seems to be a misunderstanding about "changing the industry".
The MMO industry is relatively unchanged from the late 1990's. The simplicity of it all is that the industry (businesses) look at maximum profit... that is the only thing that matters.
Taking up an arguement about innovation really isn't relative. You can have a revolutionary game but if its not doing better or even close to the profits of another game... The industry doesn't care...
The Asian MMO market is a bit different so I try to seperate it. Outside of that market only two MMO's have changed the industry. Yet they both use the same basic design... the "change" wasn't in how the games were made. It was a change to the expectation of potential subscribers.
Of course this is just my opinion...
To the OP your "big edit* represents the misunderstanding you have with your topic. The MMO industry doesn't care about change. You are talking about what people on forums like this say they want. We are not the industry... The industry is the businesses that create the games and they only want profit... change doesn't matter unless it increases profit. Industry and Consumer are two different things...
