In today's TERA column, MMORPG.com's Som Pourfarzaneh takes a look at the game's political system. It's been a system that has generated a lot of discussion and Som takes it on full bore. Som wonders whether the TERA political system is setting a new precedent or creating more political controversy? Read Som's thoughts and then add yours in the comments below.
As interesting as it sounds on paper, TERA’s political system has set the message boards aflame because no one – not even En Masse, it seems – knows exactly how it’s going to be implemented and balanced. How are the voting and PvP ranking systems going to work? What are the leadership perks and responsibilities? How is En Masse going to prevent a small “upper crust” of the player population from continually dominating the political sphere of the game? Who would win a fight between a Care Bear and a Popori?

I really am tired of this Hardcore Vs Casual . Really, If you do not have the time to rule then why the hell would anyone elect you. Casual players would have no place in the politics of a game they are not devoteing alot of time to. Would you like your state governor to be gone 4 days out of the week becuse he could not devote the time to be there?

Yet another article touching -not- on the heart of this..In a full/open pvp environment, yes, a great idea to have a political system. Nothing new,we seen it in Lin2,but this one's more fleshed out, apparently anyway,so all good. But since they are going for pve servers..should not one of the many smart, perceptive writers of this forum comment on how
1)its only ONE person, hello? the rest of us won't be ever getting that high lets be real? so lets focus on everythign concerning the 'lower' side of this spectrum?
2)in the pve for sure,we'll see about the other servers, its gonna be a money contest for getting there? And with an RNG mechanic in it,that means (i smell lin2 again) hello RMT people?
Cant you help advertising the games that feed you (love the irony but hey) without seeming so,but so shallow? i mean really
It does sound interesting but seems like there's more problems than actual "fun" about this political. I'm interested to see how this will be implemented and how abuse of the system will bbe prevented but I can't say I have any high hopes for this to work.
Time will tell I guess.
Peter Griffin: you know those germans, if you dont join the party, they?ll come get ya
+1 gtfo and go play your theampark mmo ..leave the real gameplaying to the vets at heart and play that mmorpg for a sence of acomplishment...not for a couple of hours here n there
can be president of usa i am avail 1 hour a week on sunday night at 10 pm!
Well said.
It is similar to RL. The peeps with the time and inclination can compete for the top spots and influence politics. I am not interested, but am not a big dbag and going to call down some vendetta heat on my head in a video game.
As long as jail doesn't last too long and there is a cool down on how often it can happen to someone (like CC in WoW hahah) then it shouldn't be too terrible.
Taxes can be an issue, but the populace can always rebel by not farming if taxed are too high. Then the leader will have to choose a proper balance.
It's a cool idea. Why not do it?
Effective DMs can be fat, loser, vindictive turds. Just imagine how much of a RL turd an Exarch or Vanarch would have to be hahahahah!
It's worth it just to see who has so little going for them IRL to shoot for the position.
Someone please make a good MMO.
But from what I read is that there is no sieges. So to "punch" your way to the top what, you are just in an Arena ladder setting? wtf?

So if you have a life and dont take gaming to seriously as it amounts to nothing in real life, you can't play mmorpg's?
The political system is one of the most interesting aspects of TERA to me. I'm still waiting to see how it actually works in practice, however, to see if it'll bring an element of fun to the game, as well as to see how badly it can be abused.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
+1... I totally agree and this is coming from a guy that used to log in 9 hours daily to getting in, oh... about 9 hours a week. I just recently found out I didnt have the time needed to run a guild due to having a full time job and a wife... and when we have kids... Its Over!. I feel sorry for my guild mates and what I put them through Hahhah. Also depending on the reason why they are casual players I dont think a he/she would even care if they arent elected. Years back I remember being in tears because I almost lost my corpse and all my equipment in EQ... now if something happened to my account in any game I played. I could give a f***. Let the "hardcores" have a MMO life... those fatties earned it LOL.
I'm just happy they fixed the typo in the article's title. Not hardcore happy, but casually happy.
This, why are casuals so selfish?
I mean, they have... what..? 99% of all mmorpgs made from them, gtfo and play some of those mediocre themeparks and let us play 1 ONLY 1 GAME with SOMETHING more than chasing $#%& gear.
Im a casual who can't play more than 1-2 hours a day but i still have good taste in mmorpgs.
The only people that will complain about the political system are kiddies that started playing mmorpgs with wow, well guess what, not all mmorpgs are made for brain dead 6 year olds.
Just wait for the QQs when Archeage comes to the west, it will be even worse.
Gain political power through PvP... L2 Olympiad feeding all over again..?
Anyway, I like the idea behind this political system. Lets hope that TERA won't make some fatal error that wil make it easy to 2-box yourself to leader or OP the leader...
I concur.

Is that really the point? I don't think that any casual player would want a bit to do with getting elected or rule. But, I also don't think they'll want have their game ruined by hardcore gamers who have nothing else in life to do than ruin everyone else's experience. That's what I took from the article, not whether casual gamers will want to "rule."
And I don't mean to imply that all hardcore gamers would be griefers, but they are out there and we've all come across them. I cringe to think about all the high school dropouts living in mom's basement drooling over the thought of making everyone else miserable.
Interesting but definitely going to be hard to get it all balanced and working correctly. The only way I can see it working is having one or many as unbiased as possible GMs around who know the players and observe the players. So they can try to be sure the system runs fairly.
It is how I handled things in my NWN PW for allowing any PCs more power in the game world itself.
The longer this takes to come out, the less I give a damn.
Exactly this!! and im not a hardcore player at that time...
u still can play mmorpgs... just dont expect to be president or first in the game.. people with more time and skill and experience will be higher than you.. like in everything else in life including every game. play more become better. dont play much you are losing by pros but u can still play and have fun..
As long as they can keep this from being exploited I am all for it. It one of the most attracting features of Tera so I hope they get it right.
I'm afraid I agree with this.
To my thinking, it's ok for games to make it so not everyone is special, not everyone gets all the perks, can run a guild, run a territory, etc.
Everyone should be able to have a shot at all the content in the game but not everyone should be able to achieve those goals.
It's ok for games to be brutal, forgiving, hard, easy, etc.
Not every game has to be everything for every person.

YEAH! Sign me up!
Khem, just kidding, couldn't restrain myself... Eastern love for midgets and badger-like animals is getting on my nerves.
Anyway, I also dislike the political system, too many possibilities for errors and it's been a long while since I've seen a good complicated design.
Anyone played and still remembers RF online? One of the things that were bothering me while I played it - Why the heck does a guild get taxes from NPC shops? Ok, so they bested the arena, cool. Do they visit mine wars? Only at their discretion. Does our success even depend on their input? No, only on the race politics (read: which 2 of the 3 races are currently "in league" against the third).
So why the heck do I have to pay extra for all the supplies? Because developers added a feature they didn't think through.
And to top it all off - I happened to know a couple of guys from that server's dominating guild. Their arena points were "staged". They just made 8 twinks upped them to 30, made a guild out of those twinks and "PvPed" against them.
Now I have to ask - why the heck should I pay taxes to a guy who bested the arena and chopes BAMs on regular basis?
I could keep it up with examples for a long time, but to make it short...
There's an important point about games. If a player dislikes his situation he will soon leave. This obvious thing is why all the MMOs are so "restrained" when it comes to Exclusive content. Be it a super-duper-dragon-slayer +255, a ruleing position or ability to turn people into frogs permanently. The "recieving end" of any such feature should be judged carefuly, because THAT is the most important part in any MMO element's design. And current presentation of this feature suggests that the most important part hasn't been worked out yet.
Heh, good luck with that...
I think this is an excellent idea, I am all for expanding the creativity in morg's lets give it a shot
