Like others said, this is an immersion breaker. I like almost everything I have seen about the game, though, so it's not a deal breaker. But... Huttball? WTF? SMH @ Bioware.

-to state your opinion is of course both granted and expected, this is a forum. Won't even touch that.
-but to all the MORONS saying it kills immersion..the Hutts 'could' and probably 'would have' done something quite similar, with the assumption the audience would be large enough to score them some serious credits. To all the MORONS that think it would be impossible to see opposing sides team up for money, i ask them to do what they only pretend to do. Check that lore a bit more. There were Hutt organisations with roots in both sides way,way after swtor timeline.
Excellent post!
Like I said before...I don't even LIKE small scale combat - but this just looks fun! And you know what? If my Consular happens to get 'intel' that a certain (insert opposing enemy here) is going to be on NS, and might be at the game, of COURSE he's going to be there - that's ALL the IC reasoning I need to partake in this!
I think the PvP "game" is a better way to go for modern mmo where the primary focus is PvE initally. Bioware can always meet player needs and wants later on as the game progresses away from inital launch. On this site you alway get strange comments from the hardcore PvP crowd that want death penalties and PvP full-player looting on the grounds that...hey, I do that in real life and it breaks my immersion not to do so in an mmo, but to the normal folks it is more a case that we want something to ease us into PvP rather than it being a necessary requirement for playing a game.
Is it so hard to believe that the best warriors of various, often hostile, factions wouldcome together at a neutral place to test each other's prowess and ability in various ways? Especially if there's the chance that some accidents may happen to the other team on the way?
It's not like that's unheard of, even during a cold war between mortal enemies
This huttball shit is the worst thing I have ever seen. I just don't get it.. It's really dumb and they're all excited about it. I just want open world pvp with a reason, you can keep your fucking huttball. Perhaps I'll just stick with wow. It may not have everything I want, but at least theres no huttball with the horde.

That's cool dude. Enjoy WoW. To each there own. It is too bad that you seem to feel others can't enjoy something you don't though.

Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean others are not allowed to.

Ironically, at least it would fit in the Warcraft world, because it's such a cartoonish lighthearted sort of atmosphere to begin with, and Blizzard seems big on that sort of thing. Nobody would have considered the Star Wars universe lighthearted like that before The Cartoon Network did the Clone Wars, nor has it ever really been Bioware's style. So yeah, I don't really get it, either.. but then again, I don't really get TOR anyhow.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Hutts were always known for their control of trade (hence why they inhabit nar shadaa, lots of underworld trading going on there with no eyes to watch for it, crime runs rampant) and one of the best ways to do this is through sports, wether they be arenas, swoop racing or hutt ball. Personally myself i would have removed the lightsabers and weapons and kept it no weapons allowed but i gather being again. it's Nar shadaa so they just allow whatever to happen and see who wins they just allow you to bring anything in and win at any cost.
They don't care here that you work together or that you injure or kill each other, they just want entertainment because that brings in the credits from people who bet and people will beat more when peoples lives are on the line (at least they did in kotor when they did the illegal death match with starkiller)
The hutts do have some control as they don't want to lose the cash flow therefore it's in their best interests to see you come back for more.
As for huttball working in tor. Sure i see it working just fine, why? it's a sport, controled by the hutts, just like swoop racing was and so was the arena, they love there little games that give them a lot of money. Nothing to trade, just continous credits.
Did i mention hutts like credits? yeah apparently in kotor times they did, most everytime you saw a hutt it involved him getting credits somehow, usually...through game type events. So i see this working perfectly well.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
Its not that Huttball doesnt fit into the Star Wars universe. Of course it does. Why wouldn't there be various sports being played across the galaxy? That isn't really the issue though. Its that it doesnt fit in with the sort of characters players will be playing.
If TOR were more of a sandbox MMO, where players controlled regular citizens, yeah, player Huttball might make sense. Sith, Jedi, Troopers, all playing together, though? That's just silly.
I'm not sure that making a mockery of an IP is really the best way to capitalize on said IP.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Can we stop calling everything wow clone ffs. The game isn't even out yet.
WoW is a very well implemented game, bug-free, smooth interface, great combat animation and button punches well syc with battle flow.
A WoW clone that successfully cloned WoW is at least a guarantee of delivery quality, Rift is such a case. Those that failed to live up to WoW quality will try to sell their game bugs as features.
I agree. We can only hope SWTOR is a WoW clone in the sense of polish, support, content, etc...

I have to be honest Praetalus that your post does read a bit as if posted by a WoW-tard, and you are really wrong in what you are stating, Huttball is an immersive PvP game, and these are a really cool feature for mmo games, especially for players who prefer PvE; SW:TOR does by the way feature PvE, PvP, and RP servers.
A new event has captured the hearts and minds of the citizens on the Smuggler’s Moon of Nar Shaddaa. Known as “Huttball,” two teams clash for the amusement of the masses and to win favor with the famed Giradda the Hutt in this new video that highlights just one of the Player-vs-Player (PvP) Warzones in Star Wars™: The Old Republic™!
Actualy seeing this huttball it looks like alot of fun, and I for one will be playing it. Fun is the most important thing in these games, without fun, we have another world of Warcraft
This I agree with.

People get over it, it s a sport, and a side thing to do in the game. Heres a thought, don t do it, if you re all bent out of shape over the immersion breaking crap. Some people need to take MMOs a little less serious.
It's this one planet where they do crazy stuff like this. I don't see it as immersion breaking, you don't have to go there. On some planets wierd stuff happens... *shrug*
If you don't like it, then don't go there!
Waiting for Guild Wars 2, and maybe SWTOR until that time...
All this hate around swtor make me believe that the game will be an epic success, that Huttball game was amazing and fun i didnt listen the people screaming like that in the gw2 pvp presentation, and compared with the instaced pvp in gw2 where all u need to do is ¨Hold a shiny circle for 5 secs to earn points¨. But for some reason people hate this game, but bad for them, ill be playing this game.
You obviously haven't been following mmo's long if you think all this hate means the game will be a success....9 times out of 10 the hate is right.
Which 9 out of which 10, and whose judgment on what is right?
I'm with the poster above... I want facts, show me the 9 out of 10 hated on MMO's that are a failure, meaning they make no money and must shut down.
I think that this PVP setting is quite believable. Something the Hutts would do, because they can earn from the bets. It is just odd to see any selfrespecting Jedi participating. That just doesnt seem to fit. Sith I dont know.
But smugglers, bounty hunters or any kind of thug earning something here (or maybe forced by the criminal cartels) is quite believable I think. For these it is possible that they dont find the whole Empire vs Republic that important either.
I can see obi wan doing it. He used to go down to the lower levels for drinks and stuff. So i could see some jedi doing it. Not all jedi are serious people who never have any fun other then doing jedi buisness.
That said i think its a game ud more likely see a smuggler in need of cash a bounty hunter looking to find his prey an imperial agent playing his role as a spy and a trooper just blowing off steam to see who the best figthers in the world are.
the devs stated u cant make everything story based and this isnt based on the story its a fun side thing to do for enjoyment and pleasure.
They have stated if u dont want to do it for rp reasons u dont have to. I dont do pvp usually but im gonna try huttball.
Some people hate on everything bioware says the game will be so u cant please them no matter what u do.
Huttball looks fun but the problem for some people here seems to be that they still expect something close to SWG2... Well its not gonna be like that and never was!!
Off-Topic but is it me or does that guy in the video look & sound like the dad in "American Pie" O_o

Sorry peeps but fun trumps all in the realm of lore. It's supposed to be a game first, everything comes in second place to that, even Star Wars....

I think Huttball looks like fun. I would classify it more as American Football than traditional CTF.
Ironically, at least it would fit in the Warcraft world, because it's such a cartoonish lighthearted sort of atmosphere to begin with, and Blizzard seems big on that sort of thing. And yet so far the response has been fairly positive. I don't see how this mockery of IP when LA themselves are an expert at it.
This I agree with.

I don't RP any longer, haven't in many years..
I will probably play a Jedi in this game, I will definetly play Huttball..
I just find it pretty amusing that they say the game is based on, and is story driven, yet here we have Jedi and Sith playing games.
this is retarded. i wouldnt play TOR if it was free.

Sith and Jedi tossing a ball back and forth to win for some fat slug is the nail in the coffin for this game.
Clearly the people making this aren't Star Wars fans.
