I am looking for a good sandbox game. I have played SWG, Wurm I Loved SWG and liked wurm ok. I really wanted to try atitd but it seems no one plays that anymore, so I am looking for other suggestions. I am trying the free trial on mortal right now. I really would love to find a craft heavy sandbox with large community, not minecraft

Id recommend checking out the Dawntide beta.
I also heard some good things about Fallen Earth. (Were downloading that game right now :P)
Annddd... If you dont mind 2D check out haven & heart, the ultimate sandbox crafting survival game.
I think thats pretty much it.
also check out Vanguard. intense crafting minigame that crafts meaningful ittems for use in the world.
technically, you could take a character to max crafting level and never kill a thing. the 'work orders' used by most to level on give you the mats you need. however, to make something to keep you will need harvested resources.
also, start on the Isle of Dawn trial area as the quests, tutorials, and gear will help you way more than the original raciaal starter zones. you'll only be lv 10 when you leave so you can easily go back and pick up the quests and storyline in your racial starter area once you have left the isle.
"There are at least two kinds of games.
One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."
Finite and Infinite Games, James Carse
Ryzom is unique in many ways. You can play for free for a rather large portion of your gaming time.
Harvesting and crafting are both very unique and SEPERATE professions. Also, the stanza system (creating skill/ability chains) is one of a kind. Lore is also deep and rich.
ALSO, the community is extremelly friendly and rather helpful.
In Space everyone can hear my Suggestions.
- EVE Online
- Vendetta Online
- Battlestar Galactica Online
More down to earth.
- Darkfall
- Uncharted Waters
- Pirates of the Burning Sea
I won't vouche for the quality of these games but check'em out.
Plenty of people still play ATITD. In fact, being the last month of T5, a lot of people have returned to prepare for the new Tale which starts on Dec 3rd. If you have been wanting to try this awesome game, now is the time. You could wait until Dec 3rd when T6 starts, but I recommend getting into the game now and learning how to play it. That way you will be more prepared for T6. ATITD is always most fun at the beginning of the Tale. I can't wait, myself!

Not going to find a sandbox with a larger community than EVE. Everyone plays on a single server, and there's always 20-40k people online.
Crafting is a big part of the game too, as everything besides skill books is player made (besides items you buy with loyalty points). Death means your ship is destroyed and most things inside its cargo, so that loss provides a steady buy for crafters.
Fallen Earth. Just went F2P, and has a pretty large community atm. Has a few themepark features, but is mostly a sandbox game. Skill based levelling, amazing crafting system which gives all the best gear in the game, solid player-based economy due to the influx of new players, massive game world. Only drawbacks are no player housing, themepark style pvp, and combat that is kinda meh...but a very solid sandbox game without too steep of a learning curve. And it's absolutely free. You can literally play the game and not spend a dime.
