^^^First of all, which classes did you play? And how far into the game did you get? That has a bearing on your view of the story.
When talking about story in SWTOR this is the biggest part of it, what did you play?
Because theres a big part where people grade on story - and they pretend that this 1 story they graded the game on holds true for all of them, but it doesn't.
Playing through on a republic trooper IS different then playing through on a republic consular, the stories are different and your reaction and enjoyment of the game can hinge on this fact.
Then couple that with the way stories evolve (not just through your choices) but how at the beginning of act 2, you have a completely different story, and hence a completely different feel to your character. This happens to every class twice where you change story objectives (essentially 3 different stories per class, not including choice options).
^^^First of all, which classes did you play? And how far into the game did you get? That has a bearing on your view of the story.
i know this question was for someone else, but i'll answer too - I played Jedi Consular, to level 15. Did every single quest avaiable, including side quests, group quests and flashpoint.
I would rank the writing on 80% of the quests as "below average" or worse when comparing to other quests in the 30+ MMOs i've played over the past 10 years. I would rank the remaining 20% as "on par" or "slightly better" than most. I wouldn't rank ANY quest I saw as "the best writing i've seen in an MMO".
I do agree that class matters, i've heard from numerous people now that Jedi Consular is the worst storyline in the game. So i'm happy to state that caveat and i sincerely hope (as much as any of the fanbois) that the story on the IA - which will be my launch toon - is significantly better.

I love how this guy openly admits that he practically hates roleplaying (hate questing, hate exploring, hate crafting, hate sandbox) and then starts to review an MMORPG. Why the f*** is this guy even playing MMORPGs in the first place? He'd be better off leading a clan in some MOBA game.
Nonetheless, he's obviously eloquent and determined to give an unbiased (pre)view. But sorry, before I spend a dime I want to see an effort towards an unbiased review from some REAL roleplayer, who loved games like SWG or the early MUDs.
I'll probably keep watching TotalBiscuit's vlogs on SWTOR since they seem to stick to the actual facts tightly.

EDIT: Oh and Biowares writing is mediocre at best since the DO bring up the same lame disney-story elements in every single game they churn out. http://rampantgames.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/bwcliches.png Now I won't say these are essentially bad, but other games come up with simply superior plots (Witcher, TES:Morrowind anyone?)

i would not go that far, your character still plays the same, its not like you gain 20 new skills once Act 2 happens, the way you play at lvl 20, and the way to play at lvl 50 will be similar (sure at 50 you will ahve your talents and roles will be more fleshed out) but again you guys know what i am saying.
^^^First of all, which classes did you play? And how far into the game did you get? That has a bearing on your view of the story.
I played Jedi Knight through to 11 (left the starter world). I played a few levels into many of the other classes as well, but I'm not talking about those stories since I did not get far enough in to form an opinion. The Jedi Knight story sucked, and I was also bummed about how becoming a Knight from a Padawan felt a little like getting a .25 cent raise on my paycheck. Blah.
I haven't decided what I will ultimately play. Consular (healing) is more my normal MMO role.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

I thought this too, which is why the review feels like it was custom made for SWTOR rather than being an honest review. He basically "hates" the type of gameplay in all the places where SWTOR is weakest. heh.
Still, he's welcome to his opinion, and I enjoyed reading what he wrote. I wish this game felt as exciting to me, and I hope it turns out to be more exciting than it seems once I get playing.

Based on what i know - if you want a better story, stay away from consular. If you want to heal, go Smuggler, i hear their writing is a lot better and the class is actually somewhat complex to play - especially as a healer.

Healer sounds like a completely ludicrous role for a smuggler class, but then they made so few classes I suppose they had to cram it in where they could. I just can't imagine any story line where a smuggler cares about healing anyone but himself.

A smuggler's a jack of all trades i think, so it's plausible that he's picked up some patching up skills given that he's unlikely to visit the galaxy's best medical facilities while selling blackmarket drugs.
Do remember that the class names don't really have anything to do with gameplay mechanics. They're just there because it was be boring to have classes name "Ranged DPSer" and "HoT Healer"

Well, I mean feel as in story feel. You are pitted with different choices unlike those in your previous story. You aren't always just lined with killing or saving jedi masters all day.

Whoa, I would definitely disagree with that, even for the "worst" of the storylines in TOR. What MMOs did you play over the past decade that you would consider the story better than the SWTOR story? I can't think of a single one, and I've been playing MMOs since around '98. Even the worst SWTOR storylines are better than anything that has come before, to be honest. Maybe Lotro might have a case in their epic quest line, but I can't think of another that is close.
What MMOs did you play over the past decade that you would consider the story better than the SWTOR story?
LoTRO, TR and FE come to mind for great well-written stories told via quests. AO had a fantastic story to it, but it was told in other ways, so it doesn't really compare to the pure themepark model. Vanguard stories learned through diplomacy were absolutely amazing, but again, it's a different mechanic, so not a good comparison.
Both CoH and DCUO have good stories, but they cheat somewhat because the source material is kinda cheesy in the first place, so it's easier to write a fititng story. I actually DL'ed and tried DCUO on the same day i did TOR and i found the storyline there a lot more engaging (not to mention that it had better voice acting). But like i said, I ended up playing what seems widely believe to be the worst storyline in TOR (JC), so i'm somewhat biased.
I also know Star Wars a lot better than i know the premise of any of these other MMOs, so stuff that is out of place in (for example) LoTRO or DCUO doesn't immediately jump out at me like all the inconsistencies in TOR.

When you know alot about a subject, you tend to be extra critical. I was that way about LOTRO. I have read all of Tolkien's books many, many times and written quite a few papers over them. Your expectations and desires are higher, therefore there is more room for disappointment.
Ive never seen a game that has had so many reviews of the game while its still in beta.... not saying i disagree with the review since i never read it. Its the principal of reviewing a beta.......
Any more "strong" arguments you would like to wager SN?
i don't really want to revive the stupid argument earlier in this post, but i just realized that the OP never did answer my question and personal curiousity is getting the best of me...
if anyone knows what the abbreviation "SN" in the quote above stands for, can you please post or PM me with it.
I thought i knew most of the internet lingo, but i can't figure out.. there are about 7 definitions on urban dictionary but the only one that makes sense is a particularly nasty racial slur, which i don't see being used.
