Ok so what happens on the 20th

If on the 20th the unwashed barbarian mass huddled at the gate storm in and burn Rome to the ground.  Rome being the servers.  Then what was the point of this staggered early start?  What is learned from it?

Now...if the masses storm in and merge with the population of Rome becoming good Romans...will this be the future model for MMO's.  Is this the new gimick to get people to put their money up front for all games?  And will the complainers be sated by the fact that Rome did not burn and all can carry on about their average day of work and play in the bathhouse of Rome?

The "early acess carrot" worked wonders, they pre-sold like never before....now all you rest....get bent

    Wow... just...

    The point?

I got to play yesterday with zero lag and zero queue time.

    That's the point.

On the 20th, the game will launch, and the couple of million of us who pre-ordered will already be off the starter worlds and won't even flinch.

    Best launch ever.

I was there at the early access launch for RIFT - mob spawn camping for hours and ridiculous overcrowding.

Granted, they only had two starter areas instead of 4.

Bioware A+ makes RIft, one of the previously smoothest launches ever look like an F.

That's my thought process as well. Why bother with these staggered invites when the servers are going to get crushed on the 20th anyhow?

"We avoided overcrowding and stability issues... until the 20th."

As long as only the starter worlds are crashing and the rest of the server stays up, then I don't give a F lol I still feel my pre-order was a really smart idea.

yeah got in today and it was amazingly smooth, graphics appear to have been tweaked and no zone crowding or mob stealing. I guess like many early access people on the 20th i will do something else and let other people get in and see how the ques are later on in the evening. I can understand why people are frustrated but at the same time this is a bonus 7 days and lets remember noone expected to be in untill tomorrow last month.

Well, I'm glad that it works for you. I still think it's sort of dumb.

Yeah, both my main and alt are out of the starter zones. This launch has been really nice. No five hour queues to suffer through.

you missed the point.  If on the 20th the server crash and burn what was the point of the staggered start...make a few happy and the majority pissy?

It's kind of like "it could have been worse" if there wasn't the staggered release.

Nah, the servers will queue but not crash. Even better the load will be distributed across various processes on different parts of the cluster.  The play experience should still be fine.

This assumes the numbers in the early start offset the numbers that come in on the 20th.  If only say 20% of the people going to play bought pre orders then a crush of 80% come in on the 20th.

But back to my question if this goes well will this be the way of things to come.  If it fails on the 20th will this come back to haunt Bioware by people in pre-orders angry that they had to wait for it still to crash on them and the new people angry that they can not get in at all?

I shall be logging in on the 20th I hope and rush to get to the first world pvp enabled area, look for some high leveled enemy players, insult them, attack them, get ganked and simply cry tears of joy about it.

    No, sorry, thats next year.

So SWTOR defeats you, and you go away, never to return? Is that your analogy?

It really does boil down to the disparity between the number who pre-order and those who will buy at launch. WIth seemingly over 1 mil pre-orders an 80% difference would be staggering. I'd definitely expect issues if this were the case as well as massive queues. I doubt that will be the case though.

Has there been any official word on how they're handling the 20th?

Personally I've made plans to wait a week possibly two before joining, I expect it to be a nightmare TBH.

If the 1 million retal box pre-orders + EU (700 k or so) + Electronic (700k) is only 20% on launch day, Bioware will be celebrating all the way to the bank. Realistically, the pre orders should still be about 2/3 of all players on launch day.

  • AusareAusare Member Posts: 850

that assumes that everyone that pre-ordered will be playing.  But if 250k in pre-orders log in to play and a crap load of new people come to play it might rain hell on them.

  • bronecarbronecar Member Posts: 685

No way servers will suffer on the 20th, how many people do you actually think will buy the game on day 1 and log in the same time frame?

Seriously, think before posting such nonsense :)

That's still a significant improvement over "server melt on launch day, everyone is pissy".
