Major lag

I'm lag in SWTOR to the extent that the game is unplayable for me.  Here are my system specs, please give me some advice.

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz 2.27 GHz

GeForce 9800M GS

4G RAM

Vista Home Premium

A little extra information:  I can (and have in the past few months) play fairly visually demanding games like WoW, Rift, Skyrim.  My internet connection is, if not exceptional, really very good.  I'm sure that's not the problem.

Sorry but to me it's obvious from your specs.   Vista lasted about a week on my pc.  Thank God for Windows 7.   Then gameplay changed drastically.   Vista was a memory hog.   I couldn't play anything.   Are you having similar problems with other games?

people still use vista? thought most either stayed with XP and switched to 7 when it came out:P..

anyway you try turning shadows off? and turn the grass/tree sliders to at least half if in a zone like tython. Also I would check if bloom is on as that can cause some issues for people. If you are still having issue probably your cpu since thats almost right at the base of the system requirements.. some games are more cpu intensive than others which is why you may get decent performance with one game and not great with another

oh yea and get windows 7!

Is this by chance a Gateway laptop?  Specs look identical to my 7805u.

    Get Windows 7 and Pingplotter.

Vista is maybe bad, and memory hog.

But he has 4G ram, more than enough for the game which adresses much less

I would not blame Vista for poor game coding.

I still run XP , because it does performs the best (yep it looks less good, but it runs fast)

And the game still has many hickups.

I have Vista 32 bit and 4 gigs of Ram, the game runs smooth, much better after replacing my 8800GT. Though I must say at times it can hit up to about 96% usage.

It could be his card that's giving him issues this game doesn't seem to like old GFX hardware.

This game seems to have trouble with mobile video cards. My wife's laptop struggled with it when it shouldnt have. I updated the drivers, turned off Aero (big help), and made sure to shut down background programs and the performance improved immensely.

Not sure if those things will help you. I do think that mobile cards really seem to be having trouble with this game. I've seen several others have similar problems on laptops.

Well, the first thing you would need to do is switch to 64bit!  Vista 32bit won't use more than 3GB of your RAM, so having 4GB is not helping you anymore than if you had 3GB.

I am not 100% sure if you can use the same retail key for 64bit version of your OS, if you don't have the money to get Windows 7 64bit.

Microsoft has a very good and helpful customer service. So just give them a call if you don't know how to get hold of a 64bit version of Vista and/or if your retail key isn't accepted.

I've got the same problem.  I don't have the best machine by any means but I am running windows 7 and still having significant lag so the problem doesn't lie with the OP's OS.  If you go on to the official forums its a problem many playing the game are facing.  It's a real shame too.  I love the game, more than most I have played.  However, I made the decision this morning to unsubscribe until they get this problem fixed.  Right now lag is so bad that at times I can't control my character well enough to run in a straight line.   But, it's not always that bad which is how I know its not my machine.  At times it runs just fine and at others, well like I said, my character runs around looking like a drunk at a party.

This is what most probably is going on and why so many people are having problems:

    http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=151787

Especially read the last couple of pages.

Today is going to be very interesting and for me and many others a decisive factor if we gonna cancel our subs or not, as to with what kind of "official" statement Bioware is coming regarding these problems and what they gonna do about it!

But as has been said, the fact they made a statement that "most" people have no performance issues in their view and that they try to do a underhand "stealth" change on the graphic settings, by removing Medium and make the current Medium the new High setting.... me and many others are more expecting a big Corporate spin on the problem, trying to wave it away and shovel it under the carpet and hope for the back lash and firestorm to be minimal.

Yeah right!  But would be typical EA tho.... sigh

Did I gather right, the game loads parts of the textures from the server?

If so, they would really benefit from players having only certain amount of different looks and armor. Could this be the reason why they so eagerly let people wear those moddable items (to have only few different graphics to load in situations and "verify" legit models for multiple player characters shown on the screen.

Or am I totally lost here?

Vista should be no problem with that amount of memory.
