I'd be astounded if GW2 had as many facebook "likes" pre-beta as SW has post release.  In no universe would that make sense.  Not only are the games at completely different phases, but SW was one of the biggest, most marketted MMO releases in years.  Oh, and it has the Star Wars IP behind it.  I knew about SW:TOR before I even knew about Guild Wars ONE.

A good game will be a good game.  If it truly is good enough, word will spread and more people will try it.  That's how it's always worked in the MMO industry.  People talk about rentention when they should talk about growth.  The great games grow tremendously post release.

Not to mention GW2's no subscription model eliminates that barrier for gamers who thus far have been unwilling to step into the MMO scene because they have been unable to justify paying a sub fee for a video game.  I know it sounds silly to long time MMO players like you and me, but I assure you that demographic exists.  The WoW era opened up the MMO world to a lot of players who hadn't previously considered MMOs, but I daresay there is still an untapped audience out there.

**Editing to clarify that there were other posts in this thread about GW2 vs TOR facebook "likes," which is what my entire post is in response to, but they have since mysteriously vanished.  /interesting

Until recently, Arenanet made very sparing use of it's facebook page. Hopefully as they start to levrage it better, more people will share it with friends.

I think most players. . at least one ones here would have known GW1 well before they heard of SWTOR.  I am not saying that the IP etc. didn't have an impact but I think you are actually in the minority which might surprise you.  Also, I thought they were just about to begin the advertising for SWTOR :)  I expect they will ramp it up the same way WoW did.

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!

I wasn't presuming to be in the majority or minority.  If anything, I feel it's generally safer to assume my *own perspective is not the perspective of the majority, the inverse of which is a very common fallacy people make, especially on forums geared to a specific audience.  I'd venture to guess that posters here comprise less than 0.01% of all MMO gamers.

Regardless, I was merely citing my personal example to explain that that most certainly is *one* of the perspectives.  I do know several MMO players who have never heard of GW, at least until I started talking to them about GW2.  By several, I literally mean about 14/15 people.  Again, this is only to show that that is the experience of some players.

I don't think it'd be that astounding. Honestly, Guild Wars fans seem to be the most rabid MMO fans in the world or at least that's the opinion I get from frequencing these forums. LOL

Knowledge of GW1 isnt exactly obscure considering that it sold 6.5 million copies. Thats the 9th highest selling PC game ever, and second top MMO after WoW... if you want to consider GW1 a MMO, it was more a CORPG (cooperative online roleplaying game) than a MMORPG.

Either way, its not exactly 'alternative' by any stretch of the imagination, unless you are comparing it to WoW.
