With the way it seems many ranged attacks have cone damage as well as the ability to freely fire into groups, I just wonder how easy it's going to be for ranged specialists to stand back and fire at those locked in melee combat and completely devastate them. This is a problem in a lot of games recently a very annoying problem.

I'm mostly concerned about Warrior. Compared to Guardian, the other heavy armor wearing melee, Warrior is pretty weak.
Not really. Warrior is....surprisingly strong.
On the Anet boards during the BWE, someone started a HUGE post about how he knew a warrior that had to stay in ranged with a bow because they were useless survival wise, even with a shield.
I was busy playing the heck outta melee mesmer ( note to OP: melee mesmers are in fact diesel. SO MUCH FUN!) , and took it as a challenge. Stopped what I was doing, rolled me a warrior. Only got to 12 before the BWE ended, but felt like a 1-man wrecking ball. Warrior was on my bottom 4 for professions; I am now trying to convince myself not to make my top 4 a top 5...
I wish the Anet forums were up. I posted a big long list of tactics for a 1h+shield warrior. Yes, the War lacks the Guardian's substntial heals and defense buffs. But makes up for it with:
More combo finishers than any other profession
Several different charge attacks (sword has one, Axe's F1 is one, dodgeroll counts as one, and there's one you can get for 2 skill points...and I haven't even included them all). Oh, and they're on separate cooldowns, so you can 100% swap-n-dash. Forget ever being kited.
A great number of bleeds, weakness debuffs, and cripples
VERY good stuns (mace's F1, shield, plus another 1-2 I forgot)
Shield stance, which gives you a few seconds of "seriously, that doesn't hurt" while you can move in on the enemy. Or a great alpha soaker.
Might and fury all over the place.
Do NOT expect a shield warrior to stand to to toe with anything (unless shield stance is up). But between charges, rolls, shield stance, etc...you can be constantly running in and out, evading attacks, buffing yourself to uberness (I WIll Avenge You! is amazing), and doing a buttload of damage. I tried axe/shield, mace/shield, and sword/shield, and found all three to be powerful combos.
Now, don't wanna board?
Dual axes is ridiculous. OP might have that video already, if he doesn't I will find it. Greatsword is VERY strong and was quite popular. I'd be interrested in trying mace/axe or mace/sword myself. And warhorn is a great team utility for the buffs.
actually you know what a thought just occurred to me. I never tried have two differnt Sword/pistol sets. I bet that might work really nice. Use one blow CDs. Swap do same. That should give quite a good cycle of defense skills. I guess I gotta try that in next Beta.
For some reason I was just always set in the mindset you gotta have two difference weapon sets.
If I recall correctly, when you swap to the same weapon type CDs should carry over. That's why you want to use different weapons.
Yes I tested this out in the stress test the CD on a skill carries out no matter what.
Using Sword/focus and Sword/torch is worthless as the sword CD's will still be in effect. You should have all four slots be completely different.

It really isn't. The spike potential on melee Warrior is very very serious. Same with Ranger.
I would suspect that a Guardian can be tougher. But that is its specialty. Warrior is a bit more mobile and can spike better.
The main problem most people are having is accepting that melee is for spiking. Melee is not for sitting there and taking it. If you do attempt to simply sit there and take then Guardian with certain buidls will appear to be the best. However you play that way you will suck at guardian just like you will suck at the other classes. You will just suck a bit less.
This isn't TERA where you can constantly circle strafe and use certain healing abilities to counter the the occasionaly hits that are too hard to avoid.
GW2 is heavily based upon skirmishing. This is why the comparison between GW2 and TERA are dumb. The two games may both have action like gameplay but the tactics you use to succeed are not the same at all.
Careful. I think I remember reading about one of Izzy's favorite warrior builds being essentially a really annoying, hard to kill support and control character.

Well ok. Melee damage is for spiking and in general melee is a mid range skirmishing playstyle.
Eventually to gotta get the hell out of dodge. Either you delivered your damage and used you proection for that damage up. Or you saved someone's ass with a knockdown or a wall and you both withdraw for some other try.
You never just sit there and keep beating on things. Either you killed them with your spike or you accomplished your support/control and have no real reason to stick around (unless you are finishing them off).
Kinda wanted to throw up watching these. Back we are to the run around in circles / bunny hop like an ADHD retard. This drove me nuts in WoWs PVP. And people still think no action lock is better?
ummmm.....really. You couldn't have kept your personal bigotry out of the discussion...I'm sure everyone would have understood your point of bunnyhopping without the offensive slur.
I played Warrior during the Stress Test specifically to be able to weigh in on Warriors and melee. I only got to level 10 during the stress test, (dinged 10 a couple minutes before the event ended, so didn't even have a chance to think about traits). Seven hours, of course, isn't enough to get a solid grasp on a GW2 profession, but I quickly settled into Dual Axes as my primary and either Rifle or Long Bow as secondary. (Rifle is awseome for single targets and Long Bow is excellent for groups of foes).
I think my overall GW2 play time benefited me, even though I was learning a new profession, as I died a lot less with my Warrior than with any of the professions I played during BWE 1. You definitely need to know when to dodge and when to run, but I had no issues with the profession mechanics. I actually enjoyed Warrior a lot and would consider it as my main at release, which was a big surprise to me.
The only skill delay I had were two instances of lag. In general, I had no issues with the way skills triggered and didn't notice any delay times.
I only played three SPVP matches, but did pretty well. It was a lot of fun, even though I still had a lot to learn about the profession. I'm really looking forward to playing Warrior in SPVP and in WvW, once I've gotten better at playing the profession.
If I had tried to play Warrior like a Tank in other MMOs, I may have had issues, but making proper use of the available skills and knowing when to close and when to back off I had no issues at all and actually had a lot of fun.
(On a side note, a Warrior is very capable with Bow and Rifle. People who want a petless Ranger type profession might find Warrior a good match).
