GW2 - the last medieval fantasy MMO before the industry finally moves on?

I wonder if GW2 marks the end of the medieval fantasy/cartoon MMO genre. Honestly I think this horse has finally been beaten to death and there won't be anything else coming after GW2.

is the industry finally able to move on and discover other timezones/settings and graphics styles?

World of Darkness, Secret World, Titan, Otherland, Repopulation, Planetside 2...medieval MMOs, a relict of the past in 2013?

I hope to see a broader range of mmorpg settings for sure, but I really hope they are made better than TSW.

The heroic fantasy genre is hugely popular, in movies, in books and... in games, of course.

I don't see it die anytime soon.

In 3 months, we'll be sitting in a movie theater watching "The Hobbit part one" ;)

I sure hope not lol. I know there is a ton of them out there ... but I really like medieval fantasy mmos. That is as long as they are done correctly I have no beef with more. Besides you can make a scy fi mmo and have it end up the same way or worse ... swtor anyone?

Variety is always a good thing.

Elves, Dwarfs, Dragons etc. etc. will never go away. This type of lore is burned way to deep into our real world foke lore. It goes way beyond games.

Maybe give it another millenia or so.

After my hour in the stress test last night, I had even more respect for TSW and the vision of their lead developers. TSW is a incredible game that's ahead of the curve in tech and other respects.

I think that limited money forced them to develope the pve side (best I've seen) far more than the pvp side though. PvP lacks content, but not depth.

Sylvarii nailed it. There are a ton on the horizon, so, no. Although I am not sure why you tie cartoony graphics in with medieval. They do not have to go hand in hand.

Edit: I am not calling GW2's graphics cartoony; I was referencing the OP who stated "I wonder if GW2 marks the end of the medieval fantasy/cartoon MMO genre". I refrain from stating if they are or not, as I skipped the betas and have only seen vids (which almost never give graphics proper justice). Just pre-purchased and look forward to hopping in tonight.

medieval/fantasy themed games have been around since the beginning of video gaming, so I don't personally see them going anywhere

does the name ArcheAge mean anything to you? What about EQ? Not to mention those are only 2 of many to come...

I don't have a problem with medieval fantasy setting... It's really cool, and btw... GW2 isn't exactly "medieval", if you go into details with it.

How do you know what Titan is going to be? No official statement has been given yet.

I think that Secret World is already a living relic of the past... So is SWTOR... When WOW still has a huge community. On the other hand, eve also has quite big community as well.

It doesn't depend on the setting of the game, it depends on the quality of it...

edit: oh and, cartoonish graphics are not in GW2 ;)

too bad , it really sucks that an entire genre is more or less "married" to the medieval dark age.

They share setting, time, graphic style, lore, clichees. Over and over and over again.

well if this is what players want then I'm a niche player.

btw, I can't stand LOTR and that Hobbit movie won't get any cash from me

    No way.

Just as with RPGs and fantasy like books/movies expect the medieval fantasy setting to be around forever...seriously.  While it's popularity will certainly vary depending on the year I have no doubt for better or worse the future will hold many medeval MMOs.

All the mods are going to be AFK playing GW2 - moderation will be non existant for a few days.

The TSW faithful will have a couple of days to say whatever they want before we all get back to the forums on Monday! image

I don’t think the problem is medieval fantasy, but bad, generic, lazy medieval fantasy, in GW2 we have a refreshing, artistic and innovative approach, in Archeage we have realism and sandbox elements, in Neverwinter a venerable IP and great combat, and in TESO er... nvm, can't win them all. The point is that so long as the endless parade of cheap generic fantasy is over I am happy; it’s about quality, not quantity, if GW2 and others can set a new standard. I would like to see a lot more modern, sci fi, historic, and steampunk mmos, but not till the the old ways of making them have finished dying out.

  • cippalippacippalippa Member UncommonPosts: 108

GW2 is more steampunk or high kind of fantasy, far different from the classic fantasy.

Pity there are instead very few mmo with low fantasy settings which is far more intriguing.

Medieval MMOs aren't going away, because people are fascinated with the medieval period.  Look at not only games, but movies, TV shows, books and more with this theme.  In people's mind's it was a time of chivalry, romance, and heroism.  This may not be reality, but it is in the collective mindset.  So, I won't see it going away anytime soon.

    Thanks,

mmos wouldn't be here if not for Dungeons and Dragons, so no, fantasy isn't going anywhere. But fun fact, every failed mmo that has closed up shop to my memory has been other-than-fantasy based. I'll have to check in with GUComics to verify though.

  • itgrowlsitgrowls Member Posts: 2,951
hardly considering the source of all mmo's are the works of  Tolkien. FPS has been traditionally the area where futuristic gameplay has soared the most. Fantasy's not going anywhere. People might get tired of it but it's not final. Ain't history grand, not to mention the future with a large number of ported and new fantasy mmo's coming soon.

Kind of fun to watch the modelers all trying to out-dragon each other every six months or so.

They can't just keep getting bigger and bigger...can they?

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

I wonder how busy the MODs will be tomorrow when GW2 launches and no one else will be around to catch these jokers in the act.
