Just as I suspected when they took down the faction (e.g. Vigil) vendors they now greatly increased the costs by about the factor 8 for every piece bringing the new players in severe disadvantage over those that already bought it. The complete armor set back then only cost about 1 gold and 40 silver. Not it is about 10+ gold.
Those clumsy belated money sink attempts just suck. Especially if the differences between the initial and the final price is THAT big. That really makes them look bad in my eyes.

Sorry, but prices in any MMO will be nerfed or boosted, particularly just after launch.
Focus on yourself and ignore if someone else was able to get something cheaper the first day.
Or do like me and take up crafting to get good gear.
I've played my fair share of MMOs but that extreme and quick changes to vendor prices I haven't seen before. Especially not as sneaky tweaks by a developer that doesn't even post patch notes. I've seen serious uproars for price increases of merely 20% in Age of Conan so this deserves to be critized and pointed at here.
I agree with OP. The day I hit 40 I wanted to buy the traditional gear from the tier 1 karma vendor. They had increased the price to about 10 times as much as the original price that very morning. That makes the karma pieces worthless as they will use up all your savings and still be out-leveled within a day or two.
PS: I'm 55 now with 15k karma and yes I do every DE I find and I barely ever buy gear from heart vendors.
How would anyone reach the needed 35k karma for tier 2 gear at level 60?
I hope Anet gives this another thought because it's just messed up.
