Lol, the thing is all these players saying they can never pay for a sub again are going to come unstuck. If they think subs died with the release of GW2 then they are delusional.
All they are doing is limiting the amount of MMOs they can play.
we will see when the next round of mmo's are released..planetside is next and is free 2 play. can you name an mmorpg coming out soon that will have a sub? Subcriptions are dead.
Sorry it took me a few minutes to stop laughing to reply.
Subs are dead yet the most successful MMO in history still has 10 million subs 8 yrs later and counting.
Add to that the fact that TITAN is going to be sub based and crush everything on the market when it arrives and you think sub-based is dead. lol.

well i'm laughing at you now, because only one mmo can maintain subs every other mmo has gone f2p..that is one mmo out of dozens and dozens. you don't know anything about titan or whether it will be sub based or f2p, but the fanboi is strong in you. you think a game that you know nothing about will crush everything..can i borrow your crystal ball please?

What I think is even more LOL worthy is that people playing " F2P " games usually spend way more than $15 a month, often much more, even into the $100s of dollars. Just look at some of the halloween event posts on GW2.
Then these same people will rail and whine, bitch and moan if they had to pay $15 a month. I bet in 2 months if you asked those same people who just dropped $100s in GW2 cash shop to pay $15 a month they would act like the world was ending.
And I bet a good many of them spend more than $15 a month of much lesser entertainment, like movies, or 8 hour length ps3/360 games, or their online porn sub, ect. Thats what I think is really funny.

I don't get why you think an MMORPG and MMOFPS should be compared to each other.
You know Trion just got something like an extra $85 million in funding at the start of this year don't you? If you don't think Rift is turning a massive profit you are pretty ignorant. In 2011 they got over $100 million in revenue.
I hope you realise this means around 85% of the game's revenue was put back into the game. A percentage almost every other publisher out there would never ever put back into their game, including Blizzard/Activision. This is partly why the expansion next month is much much much larger than any offered by any other MMO, to my knowledge. Almost all your sub fee is going back into the game (after they covered the original game's development costs).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

One movie night with wife costs me anywhere between 50 to 100 bucks, because well can't just go back home after watching a movie. 15 bucks is like a pocket change for whole month of entertainment.
I used to always thing the same thing when people complained about sub fees, and even more so when they'd be outraged over server down time taking to the forums stating that they'd better get a refund. "If a $15/game is down for one day, that's like 50 cents... Are you really going to belly ache over that?"
What's changed to me though is that as a gamer, at any given time I have a bunch of subs going to MMOS, not to mention that these are on top of other entertainment subs such as HBO, Showtime, Netflix, X-Box live, Spotify, Club Penguin for the kid, the occasional on demand movie, the occasional I-Tunes purchase etc..
All in all I pay well over $150 a month for entertainment subscriptions alone, and while it's a valid point that this is still cheap considering what I get out of them in comparison to e.g. going to the movies or what not, it still racks up. As such I look with a much more critical eye on what I'm going to pay for before I just think "Hey what's another $15", and I actually agree with the original poster. Considering that I can play GW2 for free Rift just isnt that much better, nor different a game to warrant a sub-fee.

if you want to know for sure thien just add up all the mmo players that are willing to pay a sub vs. the ones that are not.
Even on the FTP MMOs (EQ, EQ2, Conan, etc) a large part of the players pay for a sub the only AAA FTP MMOs that do not have a sub option is GW and GW2.
Most players want to pay a sub for a game.
Do the math first, really you should, it is helpful.

^this^. The number one reason I prefer subs is that it keeps my costs under control. When I get my salary at the end of each month I know exactly how much money I have to spend on games and entertainment. I detests the f2p model with a passion with their blatant and in your face pop ups you get everytime you log in and the fact you have to keep spending to get the most out of the game. Screw that. I want to pay my sub and never have to worry about potions, locked dungeons, locked classes and limited bag space etc. And when I PvP I will never have to worry about some guy having an advantage because of a magical item he bought from the cash shot. No thanks.
Oh sure, I could play their game for nothing and grind and grind and grind just to get on a level playing field. But that's a stupid way to spend your free time. I've played a number of FTP MMOs and the only advantage I ever saw was that I didn't have to cancel a sub and I could return whenever I felt like it. Apart from that, it cost me more for what was an inferior game. Besides if you can't afford to $15 for a monthly sub but can afford to spend hours and hours on MMOs, quite frankly you have bigger problems.
Comparing two games like Rift and GW2 is not so much about paying a sub or not, it is about paying a sub or putting up with a cash shop like GW2 has. I would rather pay a subscription to support my game.

Wait,.... what?
People sub to porn........on the internet.......???....do they know about google????
To the OP- who are you apologizing to and why would anyone on these boards want an apology for you not subscribing to Rift? Do you do this for every MMO you try?

On the other hand isn't it funny how subscription people make such a big deal about the B2P/F2P crowd buying $20 in game cash for an event, every 6 months, and such. A P2P game costs on average, including the micro-transactions for xpacs, about $250 per year per game. I have a great selection of subscription free games that cost me nowhere near that per year.
I just find it totally laughable that $15 is nothing for a sub, but a crazy gouge for the cash shop.
Assuming 20 bucks is all people spend in cash for events. 15 bucks for a month for Rift is fixed and all content is avilable to you without Trion tryign to push CS on its player base.
lol, yah, its gose on all over MMORPG.com, one would think it is the mmorpg.com's raison d'etre: "they argue, there for I am!"
Except in this case, we won't be consulted over (whatever a corporate beancounter decides the best payment play is at any given time (x)),
The only thing that changes a company's previous model is a massive change (addition, departure) in the player base, that alters the other variables and produces a new 'most profitable plan'. And in any case, no company can go FTP until their cash shop strategy is ready, even if every single subscriber is bitching on their home site.
Some random mook on mmorpg.com is bitching? Accounting staff: "Oh, when are they not?" (change tv channel).

I love how you say combat is boring and then you mention GW2 and Eve. XD Anyways... um okay? Didn't really need to make a thread for this but sure if you like to thats fine. I guess we all have our own tastes. Never understood the whole 'I won't pay sub for a game' philosophy, since a cash shop based system tends to be MORE costly then a P2P system to get the same bang for your buck.
