I would argue that it isn't the quantity of content but the quality. Which is of course subjective to the individual gamer. But apparently lots of people have similar thoughts on the matter. So obviously there's something to it.

I wasn't implying lots don't enjoy it as well. I'll come back when they add ladders to PvP. My main issue with GW2 wasn't a lack of progression at end game, it was a disconnect with my character and the gaming world. I never felt like my toon existed in a virtual world or held any significance. I was just a nameless pixel in a sea of randoms. I get that this feeling is symptomatic of a themepark design, but GW2 was a bigger immersion breaker then the rest. For me anyways. So if you take away any connection to my character and community then at least give me competitive PvP if its going to be presented in a BG format. But again that's me. Glad you and others enjoy it. Any success for an MMO game is good for the future of the genre.
I have been playing since right after launch and I have talked to maybe five people total. I do not get the mmo feel at all in GW2. Crafting in mmo's has always been 80% of my gameplay, and I find the crafting in GW2 to be very very lackluster. It is not a bad game, but it isn't for me at all.
i still don't see how you guys play MMOs like this.. i don't care if the game mechanics force talking or not.. without a guild or a good list of friends any MMO would get boring to me after awhile.
When I started playing EQ back in 1999, I didn't have to join a guild to enjoy immense amounts of socializing and chatter in that game. Instancing and phasing and action combat all add to these games feeling like they're dead. Game mechanics try to force people apart and guilds encourage people not to socialize and chatter outside of said guilds and action combat means people are generally too busy to socialize even in their groups. I miss the slower combat of EQ as it allowed people to chatter and switch up tactics on the fly without punishing players for the smallest mistakes.
The problem then was EQ was less a game...well let's say 'poor' when it comes to being a game, and pretty much a 3D chat room, which was 'the thing' for internet fiends during that time. As with everything else in the tech age, chatrooms went the way of the gutter and in comes voice comms, cross gaming chat programs, and IMHO the real old traditional MMO killer arrived which is social media. We socialized through chat in EQ because it was the only way to meet and communicate with those individuals. No long the case and it will never go back to being that way. It's like wanting your Iphone5 to function like a trucker CB.
Give players control over the game instead of force feeding them content and a playstyle predetermined by devs and you'll be shocked at how much social interaction will crop up. Politics, territory control, resources, subterfuge, etc etc.

just odd statement for me as the sheer massive size and scale of GW2 it's zones its massive cities the fact I can go out and just wander a zone and not know exactly what I'm going to run into each time far and away makes this game a ton more immersive than the standard themepark for me where i know exactly where every quest giver will be and know how every quest will play out on a second run through.. honestly it's the most immersive themepark game I have ever played and have played almost every single big release.. it's one of the main reasons i enjoy the game as much as I do..
now I will say i don't feel GW2 does immersion as well as games like SWG but sandbox hybrids do this aspect way better in most respects just due to how they rely more on player driven content.

The zones felt boxed in. It was like a larger scale monster hunter. I enjoyed the content in each zone and preferred the leveling style to say wow or rift, but let's be honest, it wasn't challenging, and the events and zones didn't scale. It was basically a rinse and repeat from level 1-80. Bottom line I didn't like how they chose to segment the different aspects of the game. My toon never really existed anywhere, they were just places to go to goof off. It played a lot like a console game in this regard. I play MMOs for a sense of character purpose. Virtual DnD.

i can see the want for the PVP side to be part of the PVE side.. but for me this doesn't kill immersion.. really don't see how the zones felt boxed in as they are huge zones.. also sounds like you ran with the herd to 80.. many of the events are very challenging when they are not oversaturated with people.. problem at launch and actually still is an issue in many zones now is over population.. there is just to many people even for the scaling.. when you start doing events with a small group of only a couple people many are actually very challenging and you start to see many of them fail which is nice as you get to see other sets of events that come off of the failed events.

I leveled with a group of friends. 3-4. We steamrolled all PvE content. I really can't wrap my head around it being challenging. It was literally the same in a level 50 zone as it was in the starter area. I never felt a skill progression. The zones were not huge when you factor in fast travel and I could run across a zone on foot in no time flat. You can't tell me my impressions are wrong since they are mine. I'm entitled to that much. As you're entitled to yours. It was just meh. Worth the box price and I don't begrudge those who enjoy it, but if I can't bring myself to log in, I'm not going to force it.

I respect your opinions Spock but I dont agree with most of them. I am of the opinion that there is a certain segment of people out there that are just "burnt" out of MMO's and I would say you elicit strong indicators of such. Contrary to what the Trolls & Haters have said to the contrary.
I can assure you none of my guildies are burnt out on MMOs, there's just nothing left to do in GW2 after a short period of time for any non-casual players, and coming from TERA, obviously none of us are casual.
Were not burnt out of MMOs, were burnt out on content, because there's not much MMO content, themeparks continue to provide less and less MMO content and more FPS/Minigame solo non-social carrot-free casualized progressionless carebear nonsense.
@Aerowyn - I know there's a lot of content but it ties into what i'm saying to Zylaxx, there's not a lot of MMO content, going around alone and doing boring hearts and whatnot for world completion is RPG, single player, mario content, not MMO content. And I don't need 20 sets of gear to play my character right, I do well in WvW and PvE with my full dps/crit armor and my survivability trait set. As for Spvp, I can buy one set of every type of gear and spend one day experimenting and then swap between any of my option on a whim, no progression needed to get every single set of everything in spvp outside of cosmetics.
Regardless 3 of my TERA guildies already have 100% world completion anyways, however I can't be bothered.
Guild wars 2 is a great game for what it is don't get me wrong but I can't see people playing this game anything but very casually/on-off within a few months time. There's just no reason to, especially without the sub-fee. I personally sign in day to day with a growing feeling of wondering what to do and asking myself why i'm playing, having guildies signing in less and less doesn't help with that feeling.
If your a PvE'er I could possibly buy this argument. However as a PvP'er I couldnt possibly buy this.
I belong to one of the premier WvW guilds on Sanctum of Rall, we have yet to lose ONE member because for a PvP siege type in the DAoC mold, WvW offers us everything we could possibly hope for. In fact my guild leader stated 3 days ago WvW is a superior design to DAoC's RvR because of the use of Supply and alternate means of goal accomplishment. Very high praise from someone who has only played 3 MMO's in 12+ years of gaming (DAoC, WAR and now GW2).

It's not about mindset. It's about enjoyment and the sense of accomplishing things after you hit the level cap. You can't train people to like GW2 endgame. You either like it or you don't.

i'd really love for you to show me a single themepark at release that offered as much content as GW2 offers right now.. i have played them all and GW2 has more unique things to do at launch than any themepark I can think of..
Exactly 100% correct.
The thing is the majority of these negative comments are about the lack of item progression. Which of course GW2 doesnt have, but that was known 2 years ago.
This doesnt deny the fact that GW2 caters to a much larger segment of the gaming community then one would imagine and it is branded as proof as the game is still continuing to grow. The real only negativity comes from people who think purplez and organized raids is the only form of endgame worth mentioning.

I'll give you the 80 zones stepped up the difficulty. More due to mob population density then actual strategy but still more challenging I guess. I didn't actually spend a ton of time there after dinging 80. We were farming dungeons. I thought GW2 dungeons would've been better served with a trinity design. Tanking and healing could've been a blast with the combat design. But that's another topic altogether.
Thank you for the well written review. You're opinions pretty much mirror quite a few of us. I haven't touched the game in weeks. There just isn't anything that's really keeping me playing.

not about training it's about understanding how it works... and then once you understand how it works then it's really upto the individual if they feel it's something they want to work on.. I have had many talks with people and laid out build progression and how you can work on achieving a set of builds that fit your playstyle.. you have a lot of options to do this and will take you a very good amount of time to acomplish it. Then what do you do after you reach the best you can be at that build? then it's upto you many I'd say will stick with WvW.. others may enjoy the dungeon grind, or just getting all the extras and achievments,,, and of course others will just stick with sPVP or you start all over and make a new class.. If i can't get enjoyment out of alts I generally will not stick with a game very long.... the only thing you are missing is the direct stat raise but with the action combat the more you master a build the stronger you will feel as you will get much better at your class.

GW2 is an amazing game and sure if I gauged the health of the game here on sandbox.com......errr, mmorpg.com, I would be distraught. However every single time I read a hate filled response or an anti-GW2 post, I feel down and distraught, until I log in and all the ills of this forum community passes. It is getting to the point where I will soon divorce myself from this site altogether. Every day the forum community here reminds me why I detest the indie community so much and their holier then thou attitude. If something is popular you can bet your ass the mmorpg.com forums community will be the first on the hate train.
I wont try and convince you on why you are wrong but suffice it to say, GW2 was an open book for the last year or so of development and we knew exactly what we were getting. I wont try to convince you that trying to play something that didn't suit your needs or wants was foolish, nor will I try to convince you that playing a game based on hype is foolish. I understand your opinions are your own but it was you that decided to play a game that didnt fit your ideas. It would be like me picking up Planetside 2 or Arche Age (Which IMO are horrible games by "my" standards) and getting pissed because it had things I think are stupid in an MMO. All I can say give the genre a break and pick games on their own merits next time.
As a semi-casual player, with quite a bit of extra disposible income, who loves siege warfare and open ended world exploration without the reliance of stat progression and 39 others to progress, GW2 is the pinnacle of game design for me.
If there was ever a person who researched the hell out of this game, it was Badspock. And you should also have known that someof his biggest areas of disappointment were areas that could not have been researched prior to release. I mean Come on.

I log in and immediately ask myself if I really want to grind Karma in Orr. My last login I asked myself if I wanted to see what the halloween even was and jsut said nope I really don't. Maybe I'll change my mind this weekend.
For me personally, my drive to play dived as soon as I hit the cap, bought yellow gear and bought gems for gold to buy bag/bank space. I wish WvWvW was more like classic WOW AV and less of whatever it is now. Mastering a build doesn't appeal to me when I don't really enjoy WvW or dungeons and do fine solo.
The last thing I enjoyed doing after hitting the level cap and finishing my personal story was level some alts. But it lost some of the fun considering I had 100% exploration in every zone on my main.

I dunno, I really feel like a lot of folks here have unrealistic expectations for their games. It's like some of you expect an MMORPG to completely replace your life, and if you ever become bored of it and find yourself going back to your normal life, then it has failed you.
This just seems crazy to me. I mean, I've never even got max level in wow, yet I still remember it as a great game. And with gw2, I've already played it for like 360 hours...if I were to stop now and never play again, I still be more than happy with my experience.

I can't speak for others but my point of view was "It's worth a shot". It's a B2P game with a non intrusive cash shop. I hated long waits in trinity based games so I thought their approach would be better.
It wasn't until AFTER I played GW2 that I realized I need true character progression at the cap and that I much preferred the trinity style of instances. I'm not bitter, but I certainly have a right to state that I find endgame boring in GW2.
People that are now coming down from their 'high' from the hype of this game(in which they also contributed to ballooning) are now realizing they went overboard with their expectations.
I tried to play a role of telling people to reign in their expectations, but I caught flak for it... haha.Hopefully now, at least some have learned to keep their emotions, expectations, and excitement to a realistic level when it comes to up and coming releases.
Once you learn to do that, you become more adapt at dodging what you feel are 'bullets'.
I think GW2 is a fantastic themepark and dont regret purchasing it,even though I can only muster about 3 hours a day before it becomes a bit tedious and I go on to something else.

Nothing wrong with taking a shot. I did it with SWTOR, only because I had nothing else to play and leveling up is still my most enjoyable experience in an MMO. Even though I knew endgame would suck I was hoping it wouldnt, but it did and I moved on. Again nothing wrong with that....if you havnt anything else better to do. For all I know BadSpock may of been i nthe same situation. I jsut wish he wouldnt of posted his feeling cause like I said, the haters and trolls are having a field day proclimaing somethign which is absolutely untrue (GW2 sucks and is dieing).
As an self proclaimed fanboi it stings to find so many on these forums bashing a game I truely love.

It's not about mindset. It's about enjoyment and the sense of accomplishing things after you hit the level cap. You can't train people to like GW2 endgame. You either like it or you don't.

"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:
And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"
~Lord George Gordon Byron
not about training it's about understanding how it works... and then once you understand how it works then it's really upto the individual if they feel it's something they want to work on..
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
Every single element in his negative list WAS KNOWN.
GW2 is an exploration cnetric, non gear based, non trinity based, Large Scale WvW game. Unless I no longer can read thats what he states in his post.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
I think GW2 is a fantastic themepark and dont regret purchasing it,even though I can only muster about 3 hours a day before it becomes a bit tedious and I go on to something else.
but I do appreciate it for what it is.
