city of heroes was my first and best mmo experience. the only mmo where i could constantly team from tutorial to max level on any server. the best character creator + best teaming + best community. I've never experienced any other mmo like it
The first MMO I ever played was and still is to this day the best one I ever played. It was called Everquest Online Adventures(EQOA) on the PS2. I never did play the original EQ, but from what I have seen EQOA had a lot of what made EQ awesome. The game just had so much to do and it was just pure fun. A close second would be FFXI but it had many flaws which still annoy me to this day.
It's a battle between vanilla/bc WoW and PS2 FFXI.
Both were absoloutley amazing games that required teamwork and dedication to succeed. I'm really hope I find a game that can give me the enjoyment that these two games did. Serouisly, words can't even come close to how many hours I poured into those games.
So many picking WoW that must have played it as their first MMO.
If you think WoW felt like a real virtual world experience, with all its handholding, automap, instancing, and systemized quests, you would have lost your collective minds with UO, DAoC, AC, and EQ.
I went from UO to EQ to WoW and lasted longer in WoW as EQ. Of the three UO was my shortest, but I played from launch to the launch of EQ and jumped ship at the launch of EQ. lasted through the launch of WoW in 2004 and played that through 2010, then again for a few months in 2011 and playing it again now with EvE. Of the bunch I had the most fun in WoW though I had spent years in the previous generation of mmos. Though I can't get into any of the very recently launched games. I did buy TSW this week for 15$ because I figured it was worth that much.
EQ2 for me above all else. The feelings when I created my first character(Troll Berzerker) were no less then pure giddy glee. When I first stepped into the world it was the coolest gaming at that point that I had ever experienced.
Stayed with that game for quite some time, and occassionally fire it up again, but don't quite feel that excitement anymore.
Heres to hoping that EQ3(Next) will be the game to bring that excitement back again.
Other then that RIFT is my current mmo, and have loved it completely in its entirety.
I think the second beta started to call for the downfall of the game. One person got into power that simply wanted to turn the game into a Lobby FPS game. so he started wageing war on anything that moved. This turned the game from a Social, Economic, RP, Sandbox. To a Deathmatch, Sandbox.
Because i can. I'm Hopeful For Every Game, Until the Fan Boys Attack My Games. Then the Knives Come Out. Logic every gamers worst enemy.
Ultima Online BEFORE Origin was shut down by EA and Dark Age of Camelot. Everything else has been crap.
DAoC came to mind for me too. By the time I got to it, the populations were pretty low and the graphics were way out dated but it was a solid game.
Best Sandbox is SWG.
EVE has taken more money from me than any other MMO if that's how a company is seen as a success. Knowing what I know now about EVE, I don't think I would do it all over again. I don't regret it but I have no problem seeing that there were better places to spend the time and money even in the time well wasted group of things to do in life.
LotRO has nothing to be ashamed of. People can say what they want about Turbine, I might or might not agree but LotRO is a big, fun game.
i looooooove WoW!.. even though i wasnt able to reach end-game content with Cata (used to be a hardcore raider) I still bought Mists of Pandaria heh (couldn't resist xD)
1. even though I hate leveling atleast WoW doesnt need brainless grinding much. All you gotta do is do quests until you hit the level-cap
2. I hate farming! thats why i love the auctionhouse in WoW (and ofcourse the add-ons to help you out)
3. Addons addons addons! these are your bestfriends when it comes to raiding.
4. Dungeons and Raids gotta love them. i was so into it that even though my friends would want to go out drinking after work i'd be the poor girl who didnt go with them because i had raid (which was almost everynight except during maintenance ofchors)
what else hmm... i just love WoW

WOW may not be the best game but it has one thing going for it with new players to the genre in particular: It's just simple, straight forward. "fun" that can occupy you for a good while compared to "most "other games. I would not be suprised if it wins out in thread.
I found it far too simple to be fun. It was just mind numbing chores.
I simply can't pick one so I'll just list three that are above anything else I've played:
Helbreath
Knight Online
Ashen Empires (AKA Dransik)
Coincidentally those were my first mmorpgs aswell. Pvp, trading, and item hunting were a big part of each game. After those, and after WoW, games became very dumbed down in my opinion. Games became too balanced, fair for everyone, and boring in the pvp area which needed to be interesting for me as it was the special sauce for my entertainment. Bind on pick up ruined trading for me. I used to spend so many hours on each of my favorite mmorpg trying to find good deals from other players and it was fun. In the long run BoP system and lack of impactful pvp was obviously a great choice for most companies.

Dark Age Of Camelot
Ulitma Online
Lord of the rings online
World of Warcraft

This is close one for me... EQ1, AC1, UO, DAoC, all rocked my world.
But if I am forced to pick just one favorite...
Asheron's Call 1

"Let destruction rain!" from Asbel Tales of Graces f
My Favorites would be EQ1 and Anarchy Online pre shadowlands.

You left too soon. With Cross Realm Zones there is a lot of world PVP going on.
Face of Mankind Pre Second Beta.

Star Wars Galaxies before NGE/CU but after JTL. One of the better sandbox games at the time for crafting and character creation/development.
EVE Online. Loved the crafting but not too keen on the "open" pvp in some cases.
Let's party like it is 1863!

Runescape from 04 to 09.
Then things started to take a turn for the worse for me. I haven't even gotten a single 99 yet..

1.DAoC for the sense of belonging to a kingdom and family.
2. SWG pre Nge as it was the most open MMO I've ever played. Even playing a musican/Dancer was fun in that game.
