I have played the free weekend trial of the game, and a couple of days more, because the launcher let me log into the game. I am really considering of buying it, because I have found it very enjoyable, yet still there are a lot of things I didn't like.
I have found it really fun, simply because of its similarity to Borderlands. I might say it's even better from the RPG and MMO perspective: massive pve battles, pvp battles, a bigger world, weapon mods that change the appearance of weapons, lore that is tied to the TV series, etc.
However, the gameplay feels very shallow and stale, because you simply shoot stuff. Those main grid abilities don't contribute much to the way you play, especially from the pve perspective. I have played until about 220 ego rating, and there was no need for grouping up and tactics to win any challenge, be it an arkfall or a co-op instance. What does contribute is the weapon choice; however, as the game is VERY solo-friendly and there is no need for organisation, everyone chooses well rounded weapons for every situation, instead of the weapons that replenish the shields and hp of allies because you simply don't need them. I think it's good that the game is classless, and you can choose whatever weapon you want, but no need of roles and lack of challenging activities really makes you feel like you are playing with a bunch of bots rather than real players. Since there is only one viable choice of weapons and no classes, the game gets boring very quickly and adds no replayability and character uniqueness.
I'm not even going to talk about that awful menu interface, inventory ui, and weapon modding ui that were designed for the consoles.
I just hope the game is going to move forward and add new interesting features, but right now it's not really worth the price.
Originally posted by chelan is actually okay. im having fun just running and gunning in the starter area (?) Mount Tam. i know next to nothing about this game, would someone care to enlighten an average (to below average gamer) what i should be not liking?
Exactly the game is just OK and average. I actually found PVP to be quite fun but then rampant hacking and cheating ruined that for me. Now its been weeks and i haven't logged in and honestly i miss nothing about this game.
and honestly this is what has made me uneasy about the game as an outsider at least.
i think the other 'uneasiness' now that im in and looking around is that apparently you pay a sub and then have to pay for perks, that quite honestly should be earnable in game, like +15 inventory slots. can anyone speak to this concern?
is there any kind of harvesting or crafting? id love to see more "Earth Fall" style elements like that.
oh and there's lots of 'invisible' people who apparently aren't loading in my gfx quite right. the gfx controls seem kinda minimal as well sadly.
A sub? Defiance has no subscription - its a buy to play game like Guildwars 2, you buy it and play it, that's it.
As you level up more inventory slots unlock automatically - I never bought a single one.
Also there are codes that you enter on your Trion account to add more perks and inventory slots for free.
I havent played for a while, but dont they have some kind of a "sub" based action/plan where you get X story expansions etc?
You get this when you buy the DLC for $10:

from the looks of this DLC it seems they are aiming for the pvp and planetside2 crowd.
while i enjoyed it i spose im glad i didnt get it for the 60bucks asking price. maybe when the price goes down or there's a special on Steam.
to everyone who posted and helped out i appreciate it. hope you keep enjoying Defiance and get a good ride out of it.
actully they are aiming at the CO-OP / PvE crowd, PvP in this game is not a very large focus from what i ahve seen so far.
F2P may be the way of the future, but ya know they dont make them like they used to Proper Grammer & spelling are extra, corrections will be LOL at.
