Anyone else not thrilled with the setting/theme of WildStar?

ReskenResken Member Posts: 10

Don't get me wrong, this looks like it will probably be a very polished and well put together game. I just feel like the lore and overall setting is really...boring.

I'm not opposed to a good Sci-Fi MMO. I mean, the fantasy theme has been a bit overplayed, for sure. I just feel no desire or interest to explore Nexus, to join either Dominion or Exile, or to advance the "main story" quest. Am I alone in feeling this way? Like I said before the game itself seems promising but in order to truly feel engaged in an online universe I feel like the concept and setting need to be exciting.

Does anyone else feel uneasy or skeptical that they'll be able to enjoy and get into the lore of this game?

I personally prefer video games for entertainment rather than another life,  And Wildstar looks VERY entertaining with the hillarious comic relief sprinkled all over the place and quite a decent amount of fun looking content.  The setting seems pretty awesome from what I've seen as well.  Though I'm not sure how much immersion or deep lore it's going to have for those kind of people, It seems kind of perfect for me but I really don't take video games so seriously.

If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months.
Why is it still such a big deal?

I played wow for 4 years and never once cared about the lore. I played SWTOR for 2 months and I love the lore in star wars.

I care about the game being fun. not if they have the best story ever told going on in the background. It's one of those things that become more interesting when you're enjoying the game but wont be a deal breaker if it's not that good.

The Videos imply Wildstar will be  fun and light-hearted  sci-fi game. So not everyone will like it.

You can't please everyone so just make the game you want to make and hope there are those who enjoy it as well.

When I first heard about Wildstar I was not immediately attracted to it because of the graphical style and the Sci-Fi/Fantasy theme. I definitely prefer the TERA and Aion style pure fantasy anime style. But Wildstar has definitely grown on me a lot. I was eventually attracted by the idea of an action combat game with a standard trinity class system and a game full of the standard content that we expect.

But at this point I really am liking the setting, theme, and lore. I'm rolling Exile because I really enjoy the Aurin and after reading a bit of the background story of the game I already feel attached to my faction and a bit of faction pride. The story is both fun and different, both of which are key qualities to have. And reading the article on the Luminai they released recently I do think they will have a lot of lore for the game as well as lore that is actually fun and interesting. I think it will be enough for both the lore lovers and the rest of us gamers to feel immersed in this world and actually care about it.

I did not think I would like the game as much as I did when I first heard about it a while ago but the more I hear about it the more excited I'm getting, so I think that is a very good sign. I went in an uninterested skeptic and they are slowly winning me over based on actual facts about what they're doing with this game as opposed to artificial hype or word of mouth.

Reminds me of the Jak and Daxter setting with similar art style.

I think most players don't feel like they care about the lore but a game like WoW and SWTOR that has rich lore, you pick up bits and pieces as you level and play the game and the overall design of those game worlds is done pretty well. It creates a very immersive experence that adds to the overall fun factor. I say this because most people never notice it at all unless you get into a game like TERA with basically zero lore. You don't feel attached to the game world at all and you really notice it and the game suffers for it. I do think Wildstar will do well in that aspect though which is good.

I don't agree. In LOTRO, I was able to forgive the game for its initial slow crappy combat animations at Launch because I really loved the lore and at that time compared to other MMOs it was good enough combat wise, the RPG feeling was there, and playing in a world I love with others was a good feeling. The world just seemed to fit well with the lore I knew. If the combat was fun but the world felt goofy and I felt detached from what the quests were saying, I can't finish the game. That is what happened in AOC. Good game, but I lost interest because I found the lore and just my non caring of the story and quests was a turnoff shortly after Tortage which did a good job to level 20.

The reason I will still try this game is that to play devil's advocate to myself, I had fun with Warhammer for the first 2-3 months and also felt detached from the questing or lore...so if Wildstar is fun but is missing that same feeling, it will keep me for a few months, but it wont keep me long term. I realize there are those who aren't like me with different needs for an MMORPG and this game targets them well.

    There Is Always Hope!

  • Not only am I turned off by the style/setting of the graphics. I probably won't even pick the game up.

If you think you'd like diving into the game's lore, the Scientist path is all about collection and amassing hidden knowledge. If you want to make WildStar into a home and enjoy playing virtual real estate manager in space, the Settler path may be more your style. The game is built to suit all sorts of playstyles and, while I was disappointed to hear that there would be no Path re-speccing, the idea of a single world with multiple ways to experience it is exciting.

I actually love the look of wildstar.  I'm really enjoying the cartoony / sub-realistic look myself.

I'm with you OP.  I dont play mmo's to explore or build stuff and i sure dont play them for action combat. If I want action i will play an online fps or rts game like LoL. Exploring is for games like skyrim or drake uncharted which you can take back for a return some of you money if they suck.  I play mmos to level a toon and outfit him and make him mine. To tweak my build and gear for the best surviveability or damage against the toughest bosses. If youre trying to sell me a new mmo just because in yours I can roll around  and dodge attacks, i would laugh at you and say... thats what armor is for.. taking hits. I dont want different paths that are unique to me... because then whats the point of playing together with my friends if we're all doing something different till endgame. And youre telling me I need 40 friends to really conquer endgame!!!? To me it just sounds like youre trying to combine every little thing you can think of in video games to sell to as many as you possible can before they move on to a real mmo.

I'm looking completely pass all the art style and what I see is a game that will actually be FUN!

Since when I play a GAME that is what I want to have, FUN!

For it to have more depth then most MMO's, which it looks like it will have, is just another feather on the hat.

I played WOW longer then any MMO I have ever had for a reason.  And it looks like Wildstar will finally be my new WOW...

You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

See I think the setting and theme for Wildstar are just fine imo. From what I have heard around the net under all this hate is that some feel like it be similar experience like they had with vanilla WoW. Since I never played WoW I can't really say what that experience might have been but this game is keeping my interest cannot wait till E3 to see the game play.

Really? I find it quite interesting, a lot more then say Rift or Guildwars 2 (both are rather weak to me). Neverwinter has a stronger lore behind it but its not very fare considering what its actually built upon working to its benefit.

Not really sure why its so bad to you. Complex? No, but as far as we know its got a nice edge behind it making it a bit more interesting at least from the vague info we do know how it works. It mixes humor with grit in a rather nice way. How it executes we have to wait and see but so far it looks pretty good, a bit of a change from the stale "oh no everything is in peril" line always thrown out by making it actually have some humor to spice things up in an entertaining way. Its something missing in a lot of recent games.

Wildstar in my mind is not worth my time.  They will not learn that large raids is a very small market of MMOs and you cannot have 40 man raiding with a few hundred thousand.  Rift tries to do 20 man raiding with 200K players and it does not work.

    Edit adding more.

These graphics are from the early 2000s not for 2013.  Wildstar is trying to copy Vanilla WoW because what success Vanilla WoW had.  Guess what in a way Rift tried to do that but with smaller raids.  That didnt work for rift did it?  No.  Wildstar is trying to use Action Combat in there MMO, and many MMO gamers do not like Action combat period, its for FPS's or single player games not MMOs.

I fully support everyone that enjoys this game. It's not for me however,I'm just tired of the WoWish look and such.Spent years in that game and I'm just tired.More realistic looks is what satisfies me nowaday's.I do however hope that many many people find joy and happiness in the game though.

I´m not impressed myself with the game so far.... I don´t like it´s artistic approach at all.... looks very childdish to me...

It doesn´t even make sense at all,i know, since i loved WoW and currently playing and loving GW2....but i haven´t get hooked on Wildstar yet....don´t know really why....

I´ll have to try it for myself before thinking on buying.

PS: 40 players Raids? Ouuuuch! that´s going to hurt! :P

I'm actually interested in the setting/theme but just can't get past the really childish cartoony style of the game.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

I agree Deacon. This will probably be a polished game at release, but the cartoony look's are a big turnoff. Why do we need another WoW?

You can plead all you want that it isn't WoW,but I spent over 6yrs in that game. The graphic's and such of this game are right there with WoW.We don't need 2 Wow's.

If people eat this game up,so be it.I'm happy for them and glad they found a game they really enjoy. If they don't,what does that tell you??

Its cheaper to do cartoon than a live movie .

Also cartoons last longer . You can watch mickey mouse from 30 years ago and it doesn't look dated . But watch a movie 30 years old and you will lol at the special effects.

As long as the comedy they are representing the game to have actually "has it" and is not some sort of marketing gimmick I am actually interested to see more. If it becomes (this was a marketing gimmick the actual lore in game is all cereal) I will be definitely disappointed. It looks promising and the only class that actually interest me is the builder, if it actually is more then just fighting crap all the time I am all for it! About time a game came out that wasn't a grind fest of kill this or that with humor to boot? I am all in. Still, it's a wait and see game.

edit; oh and Grailer very good point indeed! :)

Yeah, I'm not thrilled with the cartoony tone of this MMO.  To each his own though.
  • AlverantAlverant Member RarePosts: 1,347
I'm less than thrilled about who is publishing the game. NCSoft has demonstrated itself to be untrustworthy and I won't give it my money until it proves itself otherwise. There are too few sci-fi games out there and I was tempted to give this one a try until I found out who the publisher was. It has things I haven't seen in an MMORPG before and I hope it could pull it off well enough to allow the game company to strike out on its own.

Don't like the artistic look of the game.  I don't care if it's similar to WoW (I am not a Wow hater) but frankly I believe WoW looked much better.
