model graphics overlay?

so say you dont like the player models in a game, or the dragons just look bad , i was wondering would it be possible for a game to allow new graphical skins ? Im looking at you giant fugly shoulderpads

in mmos that is usualy concider messing with the client, outside of the ways mods allow and might lead to bans. not for all games, just some tho. depends on the staff of cors
