I can't believe anyone is impacted at all by the possibility of kinect spying on you. Do any of you people use modern smart phones? Seriously, if you were going to be up in arms about something, that ship has sailed.
I dont care if they monitor my calls or my locations (smart phone) but when they move a camera into my house that is typically directed into my living area, sure im put off.
While you might be fine with whomever watching what your doing or who you have over thats fine but others are not.
So then don't direct the camera into your living area. Solid color tape is very inexpensive, as is just turning it the other direction.
Furthermore, no one would be watching. Assuming this ships more than a million units (which is a hilariously low number for consoles), that's 1 million kinects also... No agency, no matter who you are, can possibly be watching that many people's living rooms. And if you actually did some research, you would find that they're more than likely not. Instead, basic information would be logged and able to be brought up should they inquire about a particular individual.
And even then, Microsoft has outright denied that any of this happens through their Kinect system. You're really grasping at straws if you're using this to determine why someone shouldn't purchase the new Xbox.

So your suggesting i turn the entire console around, because the kinect is built in to the front of the unit. It records sound, video and can even see in the dark, All the information is sent to Microsoft thats how they generate customized ads and what not. What they do with this information after they receive it is a mystery, once its processed is it stored? is it thrown away right away (most places are required to maintain data for xxx amount of time). Basic information could be brought up and then current information could be fully monitored. Microsoft has denied a lot of stuff about allowing snooping which has been proven false and they have back peddled their way through denial or admittance of it.
If your not worried about it and think its a crock thats terrific, but im not comfortable having a camera that i cant control in my home recording sound, video, actions and sending the data to someplace Microsoft ( see PRISM) says is secure from surveillance.
If you think the kid getting locked up for making threats in runescape, or nerd raging on facebook, Is bad just wait until someone complains and they see you own a couple guns, or talk about political issues over dinner. I give it a year or two before we hear of this "feature" being used for "our own safety" and if you feel im being paranoid thats fine, but its the truth as we see examples of it on a daily basis.

Not sure about the US but in the UK we have a nifty device next to our plugs, A SWITCH, see Fig:A.

So when you are plotting the overthrow of the Obama administration you can turn the bloody thing off or better still, unplug it.
This doom and gloom thread was brought to you by Chin Up the new ultra high caffeine soft drink for gamers who just need that boost of happiness after a long forum session.
Originally posted by SamuraiXIV Xbox was never an option even with current gen I am very happy with my PS3 I have the very first version and still works without any issues at all.
Same here.
While I do not have the release version of the PS3 I have one that I bought about a year or so after launch. It is still going strong and never an issue.
After two Xbox 360s went dead and had to be sent back only to die again I bought a PS3 and have never looked back.. That reason alone is worth buying a PS4 over Xbone. To me at least
I already have a PS4 reserved. never even considered the Xbox to be honest.
For me, the bottom line is pretty simple. The difference is going to be the policies of the two companies, not the hardware that gets shipped. Sony is giving more features to gamers for the base price of the device itself than Microsoft is.
The hardware of both machines is comparable. The PS4 might have a slight lead, but it's not going to be exceptional. If the PS4 had come with the PSEye peripheral, then the cost would be nearly the same for both units. The games are going to be nearly identical because the hardware is going to be nearly identical.
People have mentioned the advantage of having a Kinect built into the console, but the Kinect hasn't exactly caused a huge change in gaming since it's release. It's cool, but it has a very limited usefulness. That cool is also someone situational. Sometimes it's just frustrating. It's not a clear advantage.
The only differentiating factor is going to be what people get for what they pay for, and how comfortable they feel about the company they are buying from. Sony is mysteriously absent from the whole "spying on your own people" brouhaha going on right now.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
My reason for getting a PS4 is that it has better exclusives (Just played MGS2 and now playing MGS3, so first PS4 game I will get is MGS4 because PS4 actually has backwards compatability).
Microsoft just doesn't get it. Forcing core features into a Gold Subscription when people are already paying subscriptions for Netflix, etc is ludicrious. Also, you have to pay for Gold just to use Skype or the Internet? Really? lol
I dont care if they monitor my calls or my locations (smart phone) but when they move a camera into my house that is typically directed into my living area, sure im put off.
While you might be fine with whomever watching what your doing or who you have over thats fine but others are not.
Might I suggest, oh I don't know..turning the kinect OFF? Getting a 'eye patch' for it? Setting up a 'diarama' for it of you killing 5 people on your couch so if they did actually spy on you, you could mess with their heads? Seriously folks, put the tin foil hats away, worry what they ARE doing, instead of what the COULD do.

My god Mr Tinfoil hat, I SERIOUSLY hope you don't have a cell phone, because the NSA could be listening to everything going on around it, ALL the time, without it being ON. Quick throw it away! "They" are watching!
They've already said the kinect can turn off, as for having to turn the whole system around? Ummm it's not physically attached, much like the kinect for the 360. Please, you seem like a smart guy/girl/other.....use the grey matter.

They are targetting people without Smart-Tv's?
They are targeting people without smart-tvs, or PCs, or media centers (like Apple TV or fancy combo media players which allows apps like Netflix, youtube and have internet!), or tablets, or smart phones, or basically any modern gadget.
They're targeting people who either don't exist or can't afford to buy an X1.
Just because gamers will use those services on their console doesn't mean that people who have no interest in a gaming will buy an overpriced media center that happens to be capable of playing $60 gamers AND has a sub fee to use basic services they're already paying for.
Anyone defending the nonsense that is the X1 should have to work retail trying to sell it. I really want to see them explain to non-gamer customers why they should buy a $500 machine with a sub-fee instead of spending $200 or less on a media center (or simply buying a smart TV), or a $35 google chromecast. I want to hear those discussions.
"Well it does everything!"
"Yeah but so does that BluRay Disc player, it plays blurays, over 100 streaming services including netflix and stuff, and it has wifi, it's only $89."
"It's doesn't play xbox games though does it?"
"I don't play games."
"But you could if you had an X1."
"How much is a game?"
"Most big titles are around $60."
"So one game is almost as much as the Bluray disc player media center?"
"You can skype with friends while you watch NFL!"
"But I usually invite them over to watch the game and have some brews."
"If they can't make it, you'll be able to include them!"
"Okay . . . well if I do get, are there any hidden costs?"
"If you want to use those services you'll need to pay about $7 a month."
"For what services."
"Like skype and netflix."
" . . . um . . . but skype is free and I already pay for netflix."
"Yeah, but it's worth it, because you can do it all on one system."
"Doesn't the same apply to the media center there? The one that costs $400 less?"
"Yes, but you'll be able to link them all through the X1 so you'll only need one remote!"
"But I have a universal remote. They invented those in the 80's."
"It can sense your heartbeat and detect how many people are in the room, and you can give it voice commands."
"That's nice. What do I do with that?"
"Um, watch your movies while being watched? Cool right?"
"No."
If you're a gamer, fine, you're more than welcome to like the Xbox One, it's your preference. But don't pretend that it's going to appeal to non-gamers. No one wants to spend $500 + $7/month to do what much much cheaper devices already do.

As far as I can remember, it wont be. Sony has said as much. Sure when/if their 'cloud' service opens, you might be able to buy games that will work, but taking a physical game IE PS3 and putting in the 4, it wont work.
